Jeremiah, Lamentations (Reformation Commentary on Scripture Series #Ot Volume 11)

by J. Jeffery Tyler

The prophetic ministry of Jeremiah, described in the Old Testament books of Jeremiah and Lamentations, took place during a time of chaos and tragedy for the people of Israel: the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple, and the exile to Babylon. Yet, in the midst of this loss and in hope of the restoration of God's people, Jeremiah is able to declare: "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lam 3:22-23). Reflecting on these verses, Reformation commentators, who were themselves familiar with the turbulent realities of their own sixteenth century, heard not only hope for the renewal of Israel, but prophetic promise for the coming of the Messiah. Lutheran theologian and pastor Nikolaus Selnecker wrote, "Is not what Jeremiah says immeasurably beautiful, lovely, and consoling? You will think, what is my soul saying to me? That is a strong Amen, when the spirit of the heart knows and can say, 'God hears me, I know it. My heart tells me. I do not doubt God's grace. I am a child of God. He is my father and will help me.'" In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, church historian J. Jeffery Tyler guides readers through a diversity of early modern commentary on the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a variety of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans, and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources—including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions—much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to help everyone remember that God's mercies never come to an end.

Jerusalem Gates

by Kenrick Burgess

Jerusalem is no ordinary place. It is a symbolic city. David, the most revered king of Israel, captured the city and established it as the capital of Israel approximately 3000 years ago. His son King Solomon built the glorious and first temple in the city. The preservation and focus of Jerusalem through centuries past to the present are not accidents. God has kept Jerusalem throughout many wars and battles. Jerusalem is the city that God has chosen for Himself to put His name.Jerusalem Gates examines the significance of the twelve gates built-in the walls around Jerusalem in the time of Nehemiah. The significant spiritual truths for both the individual’s Christian life as well as God’s prophetic plan for the ages are revealed. The order and position of each gate tell the story of God’s plan for people of every generation and the individual decisions that we must take to fulfil His preferred destiny for our lives. The book is divided into three sections:Section One provides insights into the early history of East Jerusalem, its wars, challenges, defeats, victories, sites, prophesies, and the opening of the embassy of the United States of America there on May 14, 2018. The views of Scriptures about Jerusalem are also shared.Section Two explains the significance of each of the twelve gates which were strategically located and named. You will learn about:-the sacrificial Lamb at the sheep gate;-the work of the Holy Spirit at the fountain gate:-the tried, tested and proven sword of the Holy Spirit and its effect on your life at the water gate;-the return of Jesus Christ and your need to live with hope for His return at the east gate; You will also learn how to:-receive the “crown of rejoicing” at the fish Gate;-be holy, obtain the legacy of our fathers in the faith, and get your “ministry call from God” at the old gate;-walk through the valleys of trials, tribulations. difficulties and troubles that will come your way and how to overcome should your “Gethsemane” be turned into a garden of suffering, betrayal, agony, abandonment, and loneliness at the valley gate;-eliminate the impediments, mental clutter and distractions that would hinder you from running the race of life to win “gold” at the dung gate;-battle and overcome the daily spiritual warfare that you encounter at the horse gate;-live our lives with eternity’s values in view at the inspection gate;-appreciate the great hymns and songs that kept the heroes of our faith through the years, and more. Section Three takes you through an exciting adventure into and life-changing insights about the new Jerusalem, its inhabitants, size, foundations, walls, and twelve gates. Jesuit Higher Educational Leadership: A Case Study of Universities in Asia

by Bernard Lee

This book sets out to examine the perceptions of the senior management, faculty members, and administrators of Jesuit leadership in four Asian Jesuit universities. The research question is framed as follows: What are the conceptualisation, collaboration with others, and challenges of Jesuit higher educational leadership? The researcher employed a two-stage research approach to gather the sample. The first stage involved qualitative research, including interviews and expert opinions, while the second stage comprised quantitative research in the form of surveys. This study was conducted across the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, and Japan. In total, 30 respondents participated in the interview over the Zoom platform, and 44 completed the online survey. The book made four significant contributions to scholarly literature. First, it conceptualised Jesuit higher educational leadership, which encompassed six features: interpersonal support, community building, selflessness, equality, integrity, and spirituality. Second, it empirically established a scale or a model of Jesuit higher educational leadership. Third, it empirically confirmed that collaboration with others was the mediator between the Jesuit higher educational leadership and the president's performance. Finally, it discovered Jesuit higher educational leaders' challenges, identifying conspicuous similarities and differences between the four universities. The structure of the book is organised into five chapters. Chapter 1 elucidates the background, the gap, the aim, the research questions, the significance of the study, and the organisation of the book. Chapter 2 presents a review of the relevant literature in conceptualising Jesuit higher educational leadership. Chapter 3 explains the study's design, the methodology, findings and analysis of interviews. Chapter 4 presents the methodology, the findings and analysis of the survey. Chapter 5 synthesises all the preceding chapters to respond to the research question posed in the introductory chapter.

Jesus

by Charles Guignebert

Christian scholar Charles Guignebert (1867—1939) lectured extensively on Christian history at the Sorbonne, and conducted a 23 year long "seminar" on the New Testament. In this extensive work, Guignebert gives a full, reverent, and sympathetic account of the career, character, and teaching of Jesus as one of the world's greatest authorities.“The virtue of Professor Guignebert’s venture lies in his comprehensive analysis of the scholarship of the past decades in this field. The specialists are acquainted with all the evidence which he analyses. But there is no book of recent years which will give the interested layman a more comprehensive account of what has been written and said about the life of Jesus and a fairer estimate of conflicting evidence. Naturally, the author has a position of his own to maintain, but the reader is permitted to see how he arrives at it and with what cogency and plausibility he defends against contrasting views. On the whole his own position is strongly influenced by the eschatological emphasis which was introduced into New Testament criticism by Albert Schweitzer.”—Reinhold Niebuhr.

Jesus Before the Gospels: How the Earliest Christians Remembered, Changed, and Invented Their Stories of the Savior

by Bart D. Ehrman

The bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus, one of the most renowned and controversial Bible scholars in the world today examines oral tradition and its role in shaping the stories about Jesus we encounter in the New Testament--and ultimately in our understanding of Christianity.Throughout much of human history, our most important stories were passed down orally--including the stories about Jesus before they became written down in the Gospels. In this fascinating and deeply researched work, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman investigates the role oral history has played in the New Testament--how the telling of these stories not only spread Jesus' message but helped shape it.A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman draws on a range of disciplines, including psychology and anthropology, to examine the role of memory in the creation of the Gospels. Explaining how oral tradition evolves based on the latest scientific research, he demonstrates how the act of telling and retelling impacts the story, the storyteller, and the listener--crucial insights that challenge our typical historical understanding of the silent period between when Jesus lived and died and when his stories began to be written down.As he did in his previous books on religious scholarship, debates on New Testament authorship, and the existence of Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman combines his deep knowledge and meticulous scholarship in a compelling and eye-opening narrative that will change the way we read and think about these sacred texts.

Jesus Christ Our Lord

by John F. Walvoord

Of the life and work of Jesus, the apostle John said, "Even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written" (John 21:25). Acknowledging the size of the task, as well as its importance, Dr. John F. Walvoord has written this systematic presentation of the Person and work of Christ from eternity past to eternity future. Beginning with an analysis of modern trends in the study of Christology, Dr. Walvoord shows that "contemporary Christology has in many respects confused rather than clarified the extended revelation of the Word of God. " The Word of God forms the solid basis for Dr. Walvoord's entire study. Analyzing the Old Testament, he shows Christ in its history, typology, and prophecy. Then, in the New Testament, he examines the life and work of the incarnate Christ. The doctrines of atonement, redemption, propitiation, and reconciliation are thoroughly and clearly discussed. The book concludes with an examination of the present and future work of Christ, thus giving the reader a comprehensive study of Christology.
