McNeese State University

by Kathie Bordelon

Surrounded by live oaks and azaleas, McNeese State University has served Southwest Louisiana for over sixty years. Founded in 1939 by area businessmen and cattlemen, the university has grown and thrived side by side with the city of Lake Charles. Alumni, faculty, staff, and students alike take pride in the heritage of their evolving university, and the city embraces the school as a treasured landmark of the community. McNeese State University began as Lake Charles Junior College, a division of Louisiana State University. Just one year after its inception, the name was changed to John McNeese Junior College in honor of one of the area's foremost pioneer educators. In 1950 the name was changed to McNeese State College when four-year status was obtained, and university status was achieved in 1970. The campus has enjoyed phenomenal expansion, from its initial three buildings constructed on the site of the town's Poor Farm to the vibrant and sprawling 68 buildings and over 500 acres it consists of today. Scenes of student life--in classrooms, dormitories, club meetings, and at athletic events--as well as memorable events throughout the course of the school's history are the focus of this visual journey. Students are pictured during lighter moments, enjoying the camaraderie of their classmates, but their serious side is also displayed during such trials as the disastrous hurricane that forced over 1,000 refugees to shelter on campus and the period during World War II when the campus became the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers. Notable alumni of McNeese State include Dr. Cecil Cyrus Vaughn, a pioneer in cardiovascular medicine and artificial transplant surgery; Sheryl L. Abshire, one of the first five inductees into the National Teacher Hall of Fame and a Christa McAuliffe Fellow; and Andre Dubus, a critically acclaimed writer.

Me Tarzan

by Betsy Byars

Nobody knew Dorothy could do such a tremendous Tarzan yell. Not Dwayne, Dorothy's enemy, who wants the part of Tarzan in the class play more than she does. Not Mr. Mooney, their teacher, who has no choice but to give Dorothy the part. Not Dorothy's parents, who are as uneasy as Mr. Mooney about it. Not even Dorothy! But when the uncontrollable urge comes over her--the smell of the jungle, the sense of raw, primitive emotions, the wildness--Dorothy lets out a Tarzan yell so loud, so effective, they all feel its incredible power. And so do the neighborhood animals. More and more animals gather whenever Dorothy practices. Then the circus comes to town, and a puma escapes to Dorothy's yard after one of her yells. What will happen on the night of the play--which also happens to be the opening night of the circus-when Dorothy is determined to give the yell of her life? Betsy Byars's lighthearted story is as exuberant and surprising as Dorothy's Tarzan yell.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

by Jesse Andrews

Up until senior year, Greg has maintained total social invisibility. He only has one friend, Earl, and together they spend their time--when not playing video games and avoiding Earl's terrifying brothers-- making movies, their own versions of Coppola and Herzog cult classics. Greg would be the first one to tell you his movies are f*@$ing terrible, but he and Earl don't make them for other people. Until Rachel.

Rachel has leukemia, and Greg's mom gets the genius idea that Greg should befriend her. Against his better judgment and despite his extreme awkwardness, he does. When Rachel decides to stop treatment, Greg and Earl make her a movie, and Greg must abandon invisibility and make a stand. It's a hilarious, outrageous, and truthful look at death and high school by a prodigiously talented debut author.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl: A Novel

by Jesse Andrews

The New York Times bestseller that inspired the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film. The funniest book you’ll ever read about death. It is a universally acknowledged truth that high school sucks. But on the first day of his senior year, Greg Gaines thinks he’s figured it out. The answer to the basic existential question: How is it possible to exist in a place that sucks so bad? His strategy: remain at the periphery at all times. Keep an insanely low profile. Make mediocre films with the one person who is even sort of his friend, Earl. This plan works for exactly eight hours. Then Greg’s mom forces him to become friends with a girl who has cancer. This brings about the destruction of Greg’s entire life.“Mr. Andrews’ often hilarious teen dialogue is utterly convincing, and his characters are compelling. Greg’s random sense of humor, terrible self-esteem and general lack of self-awareness all ring true. Like many YA authors, Mr. Andrews blends humor and pathos with true skill, but he steers clear of tricky resolutions and overt life lessons, favoring incremental understanding and growth.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“One need only look at the chapter titles (‘Let’s Just Get This Embarrassing Chapter Out of the Way’) to know that this is one funny book.” —Booklist (starred review)“Though this novel begs inevitable thematic comparisons to John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, it stands on its own in inventiveness, humor and heart.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Me, You, Us: Social-Emotional Learning in Preschool

by Ann S. Epstein

The field of early childhood education has a long tradition of concern for the social and emotional development of young children. The comprehensive classical work of Susan Isaacs -- one of the early specialists in the field -- titled “Social Development in Young Children” that addressed these topics was first published in 1937.1 In more recent times it has become clear that unless a child achieves at least a minimal level of social competence by about the age of six, he or she is likely to be at risk for many social difficulties for the rest of his or her life (Parker & Asher, 1987).2 Currently, research reports appear almost daily indicating that early social relationships predict academic achievement as well as school completion and dropout rates (see Ladd et al., 2008).3 This book is a welcome, comprehensive overview of all facets of this important aspect of development. With its highly readable form and structure, it will be helpful to students as well as practitioners whose work involves them in the development of young children. The book is divided into three main sections that address emotional learning, social learning, and related concerns beyond the classroom such as cultural and community matters. Several sidebars offered throughout are especially helpful in linking the discussions of the various components of social and emotional development to promising teaching practices.

Meaning, Narrativity, and the Real

by Jan M. Broekman

This book examines the concept of meaning and ourgeneral understanding of reality in a legal and philosophical context. Startingfrom the premise that meaning is a matter of linguistic and other forms ofarticulation, it considers the inherent philosophical consequences. PartI presents Klages', Derrida's, Von Hofmannsthal's and Wittgenstein'sexplorations of silence as a source of articulation and meaning. Debatesabout 20th century psychologism gave theattitude concept a pivotal ro≤ it illustrates the importance of the discoverythat a word is globally qualified as 'the basic unit of language'. Thisis mirrored in the fact that we understand reality as a matter of particles andthus interpret the real as a component of an all-embracing 'particle story'. Each chapter of the book focuses on an aspect of legal semiotics relatedto the chapter's theme: for instance on the meaning of a Judge's 'Saying forLaw', on law students training in varying attitudes or on the ties between lawand language. Part II of the book illustrates our generalunderstanding of reality as a matter of particles and partitioning, andexamines texts that prove that particle thinking is basic for our meaningconcept. It shows that physics, quantum theory, holism, and modern brainresearch focusing on human linguistic capabilities, confirm their ties to theparticle story. In contrast, the book concludes that partitions and particlesare neither a fact in the history of the cosmos nor a determinant of knowledgeand the sciences, and that meaning is a process: a constellation rather than afixation. This is manifest once one understands meaning as the result ofcontinuously changing attitudes, which create our narratives on cosmos andcreation. The book proposes a new key for meaning: a linguistic occurrenceanchored in dimensions of human narrativity.

Meaning-Making for Living: The Emergence of the Presentational Self in Children’s Everyday Dialogues (SpringerBriefs in Psychology)

by Koji Komatsu

This Open Access Brief analyzes the dynamics in which children’s selves emerge through their everyday activities of meaning construction, both in their relationships with family and within school education. It begins with a discussion of new psychological inquiries into children's selves and builds upon the innovative theoretical notion of the Presentational Self, developed by the author over the last decade. The book illustrates how the observation of children’s meaning construction in their everyday lives becomes a starting point for theoretical and empirical inquiries into child development and gives a framework that promotes new inquiries in this area. The book describes the Presentational Self Theory as a sense of how the notion of the Self is being worked upon in everyday life encounters. Chapters feature in-depth analyses of exchanges between adults and children in the Japanese cultural context. Meaning-Making for Living will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in the fields of cognitive, social, developmental, educational, and cultural psychology.

Meaningful Assessment in Interdisciplinary Education: A Practical Handbook for University Teachers (Perspectives on Inter- and Transdisciplinarity)

by Linda Greef Ilja Boor Debby Gerritsen Jessica Rodermans

Today's university lecturers are faced with the challenge of educating students to see beyond the limits of their own discipline and to come up with innovative solutions to societal challenges. Many lecturers would like to put more emphasis on teaching students how to integrate diverse forms of knowledge, work together in teams, critically reflect and become self-regulated learners. These lecturers are breaking down the silos of scientific disciplines as well as the barriers between academia and society and responding to the changing role of universities in society. Just as teaching and learning are ready for change, so is assessment. In this book, the authors call for an assessment strategy with a greater emphasis on assessment for and assessment as learning, with a focus on giving powerful feedback and the use of authentic assessment tasks as well as alignment with the intended learning outcomes and your pedagogical beliefs. If you are looking for ways to assess integration, collaboration, reflection, and critical thinking rather than only assessing the acquisition of knowledge, the examples in this handbook are inspiring initiatives that can point you to new directions in assessment.
