The Gnostic Gospels

by Elaine Pagels

As discussed in The Da Vinci Code... Long buried and suppressed, the Gnostic Gospels contain the secret writings attributed to the followers of Jesus. In 1945 fifty-two papyrus texts, including gospels and other secret documents, were found concealed in an earthenware jar buried in the Egyptian desert. These so-called Gnostic writings were Coptic translations from the original Greek dating from the time of the New Testament. The material they embodied - poems, quasi-philosophical descriptions of the origins of the universe, myths, magic and instructions for mystic practice - were later declared heretical, as they offered a powerful alternative to the Orthodox Christian tradition. In a book that is as exciting as it is scholarly, Elaine Pagels examines these texts and the questions they pose and shows why Gnosticism was eventually stamped out by the increasingly organised and institutionalised Orthodox Church.

The Gnostic Gospels of Jesus: The Definitive Collection of Mystical Gospels and Secret Books about Jesus of Nazareth

by Marvin W. Meyer

For all those readers curious to read the actual texts of the Gnostic Gospels, here is the definitive collection of all the Gnostic Gospels and Gospel-like texts. o Marvin Meyer, premier scholar of Gnostic and other Christian literature outside the New Testament, presents every Gnostic Gospel and Jesus text with a brilliant overall introduction, introductions to each text, and notes that explain everything the reader needs to know to understand the text. He includes his latest translations of not only the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, the Gospel of Mary, but other texts such as the Secret Book of John, which some scholars regard as the second part of the New Testament Gospel of John. The material is largely from the discovery at Nag Hammadi, freshly translated and introduced, but also includes texts found elsewhere. The texts, especially taken together, present an image of Jesus as the ultimate wisdom teacher, a kind of mysterious Jewish Zen master, who scandalized listeners by his radical egalitarianism (regarding women, slaves, the poor, the marginalized as of equal status, or more, with establishment male believers) and his insistence on living the message, spiritual experience, vs. outer observance only. o For those wanting to learn more after reading The Da Vinci Code. This book provides the definitive next book for those looking for expert presentation of the alternative Gnostic stream of Christianity, in which there is no talk of crucifixion and Mary Magdalene is presented as the disciple that Jesus loved best. "Marv is one of the original secret gospels scholars who has done an enormous amount of work to bring these texts to light. All of his research on the Nag Hammadi texts is having an incredible impact on our knowledge of early Christian history--it is virtually redefining it." --Dr. Elaine Pagels, Princeton University

The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second Centuries

by Henry Longueville Mansel

Henry Longueville Mansel’s "The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second Centuries" is a profound and scholarly exploration of the diverse and often enigmatic Gnostic sects that emerged during the early Christian era. With meticulous research and insightful analysis, Mansel delves into the origins, teachings, and impacts of these early heresies, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of their place in religious history.Mansel’s work begins by setting the historical context of the first and second centuries, a period marked by intense theological debate and the proliferation of various interpretations of Christian doctrine. He carefully examines the roots of Gnosticism, tracing its influences from pre-Christian thought, including Platonic, Jewish, and Eastern philosophies. Through this historical lens, Mansel elucidates how Gnostic beliefs diverged from orthodox Christianity.Central to "The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second Centuries" is Mansel’s detailed exposition of the key tenets of Gnostic thought. He explores the Gnostic worldview, characterized by a dualistic perception of reality, the concept of secret knowledge (gnosis), and the belief in a divine spark within humans seeking liberation from the material world. Mansel provides clear explanations of these complex ideas, making them accessible to both scholars and general readers.Mansel also delves into the major Gnostic sects, such as the Valentinians, the Basilideans, and the Marcionites, detailing their distinctive beliefs and practices. He highlights the theological conflicts between Gnosticism and emerging orthodox Christianity, illustrating how early church fathers, such as Irenaeus and Tertullian, responded to and refuted Gnostic doctrines."The Gnostic Heresies of the First and Second Centuries" is an invaluable resource for students of early Christianity, theology, and religious history. Mansel’s rigorous scholarship and engaging writing provide a thorough and balanced perspective on the Gnostic movements, emphasizing their significance in the broader context of Christian development.

The Goatnappers

by Rosa Jordan

Justin Martin is almost fifteen, and things are finally starting to look up for him. Up until now his life has seemed woefully predictable -- barely getting by in school, taking the bus home to do his chores around their small farm, bickering with his younger brother and sister. His mom has to work nonstop to make ends meet. Then when Justin becomes the first freshman in almost twenty years to make the high school's varsity baseball team, he's convinced his problems are all behind him. All he needs now to make his happiness complete is a bicycle so he can ride home after baseball practice. To earn the money for the bike, Justin sells Little Billy, one of the family's beloved baby goats. And that is where things begin to get complicated. Justin's siblings find out that the new owner, Mr. Grimsted, is horribly mistreating Little Billy. Must Justin break the law to save the poor animal? Then, when a red sports car appears in the Martin's driveway one afternoon, is it bringing emotional upheaval for the entire family, the tempting lure of adventure, or both? Author Rosa Jordan's memorable, well-drawn characters are woven together through circumstances -- sometimes frantically comic, sometimes heartrending -- into a web of complex relationships marked by the challenges of figuring out what is right and wrong and the confusion of divided loyalties.

The God Who Gives: How the Trinity Shapes the Christian Story

by Kelly M. Kapic

Many Christians wonder what the Christian life is all about. They hear about &“grace&” but struggle to rightly understand it, much less live it. They are taught about God, but their vision of him does not always reflect the full biblical portrait of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When this happens Christians struggle to know the ways of God and how to joyfully participate in his work. The God Who Gives provides a compelling vision of Christian faith and life, helping readers discover the uniqueness of the gospel—that God's kingdom comes not by taking, but by giving—God gives Himself! We are invited into the fullness of life that can only come through the gift of God&’s divine generosity.Taking readers through the grand biblical narrative of creation, fall, redemption, and kingdom author Kelly M. Kapic helps us see our story in and through the story of Scripture. He shows that everything belongs to God, and yet because of our turning and taking from him we experience a kind of suffocating bondage to sin. So how does God reclaim us? God gives again. The God who gave in creation restores by recreating us through his Son and by his Spirit. The kingdom of God is an overflowing measure of divine generosity that we are invited to participate in.The God Who Gives calls readers to discover that the whole Christian story is founded upon the Triune God&’s self-giving and our belonging to God. Fully embracing this truth changes how we view God, ourselves, and the world. Living in God's gifts, we are freed to give ourselves and truly experience life.

The God of Monkey Science: People of Faith in a Modern Scientific World

by Janet Kellogg Ray

How to hold true to your faith and embrace modern scienceEver since the Scopes Monkey Trial in the early twentieth century, American evangelicals have considered scientists public enemy #1. But this antipathy to modern science turned deadly during the COVID-19 crisis, when white evangelicals snubbed precautions and vaccines. Herself an evangelical Christian and a science educator, Janet Kellogg Ray explains how we got here and how to fix it.As the follow-up to Baby Dinosaurs on the Ark?, this lively volume covers evolution as well as the coronavirus pandemic, vaccines, climate change, and the frontiers of genetic research. Ray explains the facts accessibly and with verve. Along the way, she vividly narrates the scientific achievements—and political and religious drama—that got us to where we are today.Ultimately, Ray calls for evangelicals to speak to science, rather than deny it. We need Christian ethics now more than ever to determine how best to act in light of current scientific data and for love of neighbor. If you&’re afraid of science hurting your faith, this book will show you how to be true to both.

The God of the Gospel of John

by Marianne Meye Thompson

While there are numerous studies of God in the Old Testament, the concept of God has largely been ignored as a subject of inquiry in contemporary New Testament theology. As this superb work by Marianne Meye Thompson shows, however, an understanding of the identity of God is central to the New Testament, particularly to the Gospel of John. Thompson here offers the first comprehensive study of the concept of God in John's Gospel. She shows that one must first grasp the importance of God to John before one can properly appreciate the Gospel's Christology and overarching message. By arguing that John is rightly understood to be a "theocentric" work, Thompson challenges the prevailing theory that John is primarily concerned with Christology. While Thompson uses traditional historical and exegetical approaches to the New Testament and ancient sources, her study is mainly theological in scope. She asks how John portrays God and how, after reading the Gospel, we ought to speak of the identity of God. Unlike many recent studies of John, this one does not try to reconstruct the history behind the text but, rather, tries to fully illumine the theological content of John's message. A seminal study with lasting implications for New Testament theology, The God of the Gospel of John will become a standard text for students of the New Testament.
