Why the Gospel?: Living the Good News of King Jesus with Purpose

by Matthew W. Bates

We know what the gospel is—but do we know why it is?    As Christians, we often ask what the gospel is, when we should be asking why it is. Matthew W. Bates has previously demonstrated that the &“good news&” of the gospel is that Jesus is King. But in his latest book, he explores God&’s intentions: why has God issued this royal proclamation? And what role can it play in our everyday lives?   As Bates observes, we find the answer in a simple but challenging realization: &“I am a horrible king of my own life.&” With examples from Scripture, literature, and personal experience, Bates explains what pledging allegiance to Jesus as ruler of our lives looks like. Living authentically according to God&’s reign conforms humanity to the image of Jesus and extends his glory and honor to all creation.    Perfect for church studies, evangelism, or personal spiritual reading, Why the Gospel? invites readers to consider how we can transform our lives and communities through loyalty and devotion to King Jesus. The book includes questions to guide discussion.

Why the Iraqi Resistance to the Coalition Invasion Was So Weak

by Stephen T. Hosmer

Draws upon information derived primarily from interviews with and interrogations of senior Iraqi military and civilian officials to examine why the Iraqi resistance in March and April 2003 was so weak. It focuses on two questions: (1) Why did the Iraqi Regular Army and Republican Guard forces do so little fighting? and (2) Why did Iraqi leaders fail to adopt certain defensive measures that would have made the Coalition's task more difficult?

Why?: What Makes Us Curious

by Mario Livio

Astrophysicist and author Mario Livio investigates perhaps the most human of all our characteristics—curiosity—as he explores our innate desire to know why.Experiments demonstrate that people are more distracted when they overhear a phone conversation—where they can know only one side of the dialogue—than when they overhear two people talking and know both sides. Why does half a conversation make us more curious than a whole conversation? In the ever-fascinating Why? Mario Livio interviewed scientists in several fields to explore the nature of curiosity. He examined the lives of two of history’s most curious geniuses, Leonardo da Vinci and Richard Feynman. He also talked to people with boundless curiosity: a superstar rock guitarist who is also an astrophysicist; an astronaut with degrees in computer science, biology, literature, and medicine. What drives these people to be curious about so many subjects? Curiosity is at the heart of mystery and suspense novels. It is essential to other forms of art, from painting to sculpture to music. It is the principal driver of basic scientific research. Even so, there is still no definitive scientific consensus about why we humans are so curious, or about the mechanisms in our brain that are responsible for curiosity. Mario Livio—an astrophysicist who has written about mathematics, biology, and now psychology and neuroscience—explores this irresistible subject in a lucid, entertaining way that will captivate anyone who is curious about curiosity.

Widening Participation, Higher Education and Non-Traditional Students

by Catherine A. Marshall Sam J. Nolan Douglas P. Newton

This book highlights the problems that have developed as students lack either the social or cultural capital to take the opportunity of Higher Education through conventional routes. This might be due to leaving school early, lacking entry qualifications or wanting to further their education and prospects after entering the workplace. Foundation courses help to widen participation and create a route towards higher education. This book offers tried and tested practical solutions, from the notion of widening participation, to recruitment of students and to ways of helping them to make the most of themselves and develop the skills they need to progress on degree courses of their choice.

Widening University Access and Participation in the Global South: Using the Zambian Context to Inform Other Developing Countries (Perspectives on Education in Africa)

by Edward Mboyonga

Using a capability approach as an analytical framework, this timely volume examines how access to higher education, enabled through private universities, can transform students’ lives and contribute to human development in low-income countries in the Global South.Providing new insights into the contribution of the private higher education sector in Africa’s developmental agendas, the book offers an alternative to human capital theory by offering an expansive notion on the value of higher education—emphasising both the economic and the intrinsic societal and social benefits that come from access to university and raised aspirations. The chapters identify and discuss six specific capabilities valued by students that higher education provides. This includes epistemological access, epistemic contribution, aspiration, recognition, respect and belonging, Ubuntu, and employability. The book foregrounds the voices of students and lecturers to explore students’ aspirations, agency, access, and participation.Ultimately, promoting a reconsideration of access to higher education beyond numerical terms by focusing on students’ access to transformative knowledge as means to promote their freedom to achieve well-being, the book will appeal to scholars, researchers and postgraduate students in higher education, African education studies, and international and comparative education more broadly.

Widening the Circle: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy for American Indian Children

by Beverly J. Klug Patricia T. Whitfield

Recognizing the need for a pedagogy that better serves American Indian students, Beverly J. Klug and Patricia T. Whitfield construct a pedagogical model that blends native and non-native worldviews and methods. Among the building blocks of this new, culturally relevant education are language-based approaches to literacy development, the use of oral histories to supplement traditional texts, and a re-evaluation of the knowledge base these students need for success in tribal enterprises.

Widening the Circle: The Power of Inclusive Classrooms

by Mara Sapon-Shevin

Widening the Circle is a passionate, even radical argument for creating school and classroom environments where all kids, including children labeled as "disabled" and "special needs," are welcome on equal terms. In opposition to traditional models of special education, where teachers decide when a child is deemed "ready to compete" in "mainstream" classes, Mara Sapon-Shevin articulates a vision of full inclusion as a practical and moral goal. Inclusion, she argues, begins not with the assumption that students have to earn their way into the classroom with their behavior or skills, it begins with the right of every child to be in the mainstream of education, perhaps with modifications, adaptations, and support. Full inclusion requires teachers to think about all aspects of their classrooms-pedagogy, curriculum, and classroom climate. Crucially, Sapon-Shevin takes on arguments against full inclusion in a section of straight-talking answers to common questions. She agrees with critics that the rhetoric of inclusion has been used to justify eliminating services and "dumping" students with significant educational needs unceremoniously back into the mainstream with little or no support. If full inclusion is properly implemented, however, she argues, it not only clearly benefits those traditionally excluded but enhances the educations and lives of those considered mainstream in myriad ways. Through powerful storytelling and argument, Sapon-Shevin lays out the moral and educational case for not separating kids on the basis of difference.

by Anne Weidermann Stephanie Winter Jens Geldner-Belli Tanja Kinne Mirko Moll

by Ullrich Dittler Christian Kreidl

by Eva Wahl
