Handbook on the Korean Language and Literacy: Insights into Hangul and Text Processing
by Heather Winskel Hye K. Pae Say Young KimThis handbook offers comprehensive insights into the language-writing nexus of the Korean alphabet, Hangul. Recognized by international linguists and historians as the most scientifically designed and efficient script, Hangul's uniqueness lies in its effective integration of the alphabetic principle into syllabic blocks. The volume challenges the dominant Eurocentric research trend by extending the body of knowledge to include Korean. The Korean alphabet is uniquely different from the Chinese and Japanese writing systems and the Latin alphabet. The state-of-the-art reflections on the Korean language, its alphabet, and its processing are organized into five parts, including (1) spoken language and written language, (2) processing at the lexical level, (3) processing at the sentential level, (4) acquisition of Korean as L1 and L2, and (5) future directions in theory, methodology, pedagogy, and more. The volume is written by leading Korean and non-Korean specialists in relevant fields across the world. It discusses Hangul-specific theories, script-specific empirical evidence, and syllable-based pedagogical practices. With the current Korean cultural wave (a.k.a., Hallyu; e.g., K-pop, K-dramas, K-movies, etc.) spreading across the world, this Handbook is timely and serves as a signpost to future research and practice. This collection of chapters serves as an authoritative vade mecum, offering scientifically grounded discussions on the complex mechanisms involved in reading and text processing while remaining accessible to students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

by Roberto Basili Cristina Bosco Rodolfo Delmonte Alessandro Moschitti Maria SimiThe papers collected in this volume are selected as a sample of the progress in Natural Language Processing (NLP) performed within the Italian NLP community and especially attested by the PARLI project. PARLI (Portale per l'Accesso alle Risorse in Lingua Italiana) is a project partially funded by the Ministero Italiano per l'Università e la Ricerca (PRIN 2008) from 2008 to 2012 for monitoring and fostering the harmonic growth and coordination of the activities of Italian NLP. It was proposed by various teams of researchers working in Italian universities and research institutions. According to the spirit of the PARLI project, most of the resources and tools created within the project and here described are freely distributed and they did not terminate their life at the end of the project itself, hoping they could be a key factor in future development of computational linguistics.
Haunted Serbia: Representations of History and War in the Literary Imagination (Legenda)
by David NorrisHaunting is what happens when the past is disturbed and the victims of previous violence, who are thought to be buried and forgotten, are brought back to the present and made to live again. Serbian fiction writers of the 1980s exhume the ghosts of the past, re-remembering the cruelty of the twentieth century, reinterpreting the heroic role of the Partisans and the extraordinary measures taken to defend Yugoslavia’s recently won independence and socialist revolution. Their uncanny and ghostly imagery challenges the assumptions of the master discourse promoted by the country’s orthodox communist authorities and questions the historical roots of social and cultural identities. The instability of this period of transition is deepened during the wars of the 1990s, when authors turn from the memory of past violence to face the ferocious brutality of new conflicts. The haunting evocations in their work continue to articulate fresh uncertainties as the trappings of modern civilization are stripped away and replaced by the destructive logic of civil war. The past returns once more with renewed energy in the struggle to make sense of a vastly changed world.

It is a significant contribution to the goals of formulating theory, developing informed classroom practices, and creating enlightened programs for students who bring home-language knowledge into the classroom.
Historical Phonology of Chinese (China Perspectives)
by Dong TongheAs an important introduction to the phonological history of Chinese, this title explores the phonological systems of the Chinese language and explains basic concepts, materials and methodologies. Unlike many historical accounts, this book adopts a reverse chronological sequence – starting with the phonology of Modern Mandarin and modern Chinese dialects, then looking back on Early Mandarin and Middle Chinese, and ultimately ending with Old Chinese phonology. This arrangement makes the book reasonably approachable to both professionals and general readers, building up knowledge along an ascending order of difficulty, from familiar, observable facts to theoretical, speculative hypotheses. Based on the extant studies and two essential types of rhyme materials, the book reconstructs the speech sounds of Middle and Old Chinese, in terms of initials, finals and tones. It also analyses the transition and evolution of phonological systems of the Chinese language in different periods. Marking the beginning of historical Chinese phonological studies and drawing on modern Western linguistics, this book will serve as an essential read for students and researchers of Chinese language, Chinese linguistics and especially historical Chinese phonology.
