by Kaitlyn Sage Patterson“Two fierce young people battle a fiery landscape and vicious foes in a race for freedom. I was glued to my seat!”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Tamora PierceIn the Alskad Empire, nearly all are born with a twin, two halves to form one whole…yet some face the world alone. The singlebornA rare few are singleborn in each generation, and therefore given the right to rule by the gods and goddesses. The Disappearance of Gregory Pluckrose
by Elizabeth Gundy&“Let me make clear from the outset, I detest adventure. It&’s tasteless, showy, vulgar, and uncalled for.&” So begins this delicious thriller about a gay interior decorator who joins his super-wealthy clients for a Caribbean cruise, only to find himself shanghaied by pirates. Bound hand and foot and tossed unceremoniously into a quaint, Paul Gauguin sort of hut picturesquely thatched with banana leaves, Gregory fears he will be boiled à la langouste and served without so much as a creative sauce. But one night, as he lies in the dark with his face in the dirt, he hears a digging, snooting sound coming from the ground outside . . . Enter the most endearing sidekick in fiction, the brave pig Savarin. High adventure is turned on its head in this affectionate satire of yuppie values. &“It is as if Oscar Wilde had been parachuted into the jungle,&” says the New York Times. &“You will find yourself picking out and stowing away your favorite lines. There are enough twists in the story to make a yogi sore. Under the spell of Gundy&’s droll and accomplished prose you will end up smiling through the whole thing.&”
The Disappearing L: Erasure of Lesbian Spaces and Culture (SUNY series in Queer Politics and Cultures)
by Bonnie J. MorrisA 2018 Over the Rainbow Selection presented by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table (GLBTRT) of the American Library AssociationLGBT Americans now enjoy the right to marry—but what will we remember about the vibrant cultural spaces that lesbian activists created in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s? Most are vanishing from the calendar—and from recent memory. The Disappearing L explores the rise and fall of the hugely popular women-only concerts, festivals, bookstores, and support spaces built by and for lesbians in the era of woman-identified activism. Through the stories unfolding in these chapters, anyone unfamiliar with the Michigan festival, Olivia Records, or the women's bookstores once dotting the urban landscape will gain a better understanding of the era in which artists and activists first dared to celebrate lesbian lives. This book offers the backstory to the culture we are losing to mainstreaming and assimilation. Through interviews with older activists, it also responds to recent attacks on lesbian feminists who are being made to feel that they've hit their cultural expiration date.

The Disintegrations: A Novel
by Alistair Mccartney"I know nothing about death, absolutely nothing," asserts the narrator of this inventive autobiographical novel. Yet he can't stop thinking about it. Detached from life in Los Angeles and his past in Australia, uncomfortable around other humans, he researches death on the Internet; mulls over distant and intimate stories of suicides, serial killers, and "natural deaths"; and wanders about LA's Holy Cross Cemetery. He's looking for answers, all the while formulating his own disquieting philosophies. Within this dizzying investigation into the mystery of death is another mystery: who is the companion igniting these memories? This enigmatic novel blurs the line between fiction and nonfiction, story and eulogy, poetry and obituary. Wry yet somber, astringent yet tender, The Disintegrations confronts both the impossibility of understanding death and the timeless longing for immortality.
The Distance Between Us
by Bart YatesHester Parker resides in an elegant Victorian house in the town of Bolton, Illinois. She spends her evenings listening to the lush tones of Mahler and Chopin, drinking sub-par Merlot, and reflecting on a life that has suddenly fallen apart. At seventy-one, Hester is as brilliant and sharp-tongued as ever, capable of inspiring her music students to soaring heights or reducing them to tears with a single comment. But her wit can't hide the bitterness that comes with loss--the loss of her renowned violinist husband, Arthur Donovan, who left her for another woman, and the loss of her career as a concert pianist after injuring her wrist. When Hester decides to rent out the attic apartment to Alex, a young college student, she has no idea of the impact he will have on her life and her family. Good-natured and awkward, with secrets of his own, Alex becomes an unlikely confidant and a means of reconnecting with the world outside Hester's window. But his presence also exposes old memories and grief that Hester has tried to bury. Over the course of one remarkable month, Hester will confront angry accusations, long-hidden jealousies, and the inescapable truth that tore her family apart and might, against all odds, help reconcile them again. And her brief friendship with Alex will leave each with a surprising legacy--acceptance of the past, a seed of comfort in the present, and hope for the future, wherever it may lead. The Distance Between Us: A Novel
by Noah BlyIn The Distance Between Us, Noah Bly presents a blistering portrait of a troubled family, of bonds that can be battered but never broken, and of the friendships that can make us whole again. Hester Parker resides in an elegant Victorian house in the town of Bolton, Illinois. But her wit can’t hide the bitterness that comes with loss—the loss of her renowned violinist husband, Arthur Donovan, who left her for another woman, and the loss of her career as a concert pianist after injuring her wrist. In this home that holds so many memories, Hester and Arthur raised three volatile children—Paul, a talented and neurotic cellist, Caitlin, an accomplished literary professor who inspires both dread and worship among her students, and Jeremy, sweet, spirited, and as musically gifted as his parents. Though Caitlin and Paul still live in Bolton, both have taken Arthur’s side in the divorce and rarely see their mother. When Hester decides to rent out the attic apartment to Alex, a young college student, she has no idea of the impact he will have on her life and her family. Good-natured and awkward, with secrets of his own, Alex becomes an unlikely confidant and a means of reconnecting with the world outside Hester’s window. But his presence also exposes old memories and grief that Hester has tried to bury. Over the course of one remarkable month, Hester will confront angry accusations, long-hidden jealousies, and the inescapable truth that tore her family apart and might, against all odds, help reconcile them again. And her brief friendship with Alex will leave each with a surprising legacy—acceptance of the past, a seed of comfort in the present, and hope for the future, wherever it may lead. Tender and funny, heartbreaking and wise, The Distance Between Us is a masterful evocation of family and friendship, of the pain that goes hand-in-hand with love, and of the grace and wisdom that remain when heartbreak finally subsides.
