Multidirectional Speed in Sport: Research to Application
by Paul A. Jones Thomas Dos’SantosDuring field- and court-based sports, players are continually required to perceive their environment within a match and select and perform the most appropriate action to achieve their immediate goal within that match instance. This ability is commonly known as agility, considered a vital quality in such sports and may incorporate a variety of locomotion and instantaneous actions. Multidirectional speed is a global term to describe the competency and capacity to perform such actions: accelerate, decelerate, change direction, and ultimately maintain speed in multiple directions and movements within the context of sports-specific scenarios, encompassing agility, speed, and many other related qualities. Multidirectional speed in sport depends on a multitude of factors, including perceptual-cognitive abilities, physical qualities, and the technical ability to perform the previously mentioned actions. Multidirectional Speed in Sport: Research to Application reviews the science of multidirectional speed and translates this information into real-world application in order to provide a resource for practitioners to develop multidirectional speed with athletes, bringing together knowledge from a wealth of world-leading researchers and applied practitioners in the area of speed and agility to provide a complete resource to assist practitioners in designing effective multidirectional speed development programmes. This text is critical reading for undergraduate and graduate sports science students, all individuals involved in training athletes (e.g. coaches, physiotherapists, athletic trainers), and researchers in the field of sports science and sports medicine.

Multiple Sclerosis
by Jürg Kesselring Giancarlo Comi Alan J. ThompsonIn multiple sclerosis (MS), conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) has proved to be a valuable tool to increase diagnostic confidence and for monitoring the efficacy of experimental treatment. However, cMRI has limited specificity and accuracy of cMRI to the most disabling aspects of the MS pathology, known to occur in and outside macroscopic lesions. Modern quantitative MR techniques have the potential to overcome the limitations of cMRI, and their application is changing dramatically our understanding of how MS causes irreversible disability. In detail, there is an increasing body of MR evidence that MS is not only a white matter disease and does not only cause focal lesions, as well as that neurodegeneration is an important aspect of the disease (since the earliest clinical phases), which is only partially related to inflammatory changes. There is also increasing perception that modern MR methodologies should be more extensively employed in clinical trials to derive innovative information. Written by world-renowned scientists, the volume provides a state-of-the-art on the most recent MRI techniques related to MS, and it will bi and indispensable tool for all those working in this field.
Multiple Sclerosis
by Jan de VriesMultiple Sclerosis is recognised as a growing problem. In some Scandinavian countries, Holland, Britain and North America, the number of sufferers is rising by the day. In the UK alone, it is estimated that between 50,000 and 60,000 people suffer from this debilitating disease; in the USA figures of 350,000 are quoted. What are the causes of the problem? And what can be done about it? Could it be possible to prevent MS? When we look at the countries where there is no occurrence of MS whatsoever; the immediate answer is YES. Jan de Vries has studied and treated Multiple Sclerosis for over 45 years. He has learned that every MS patient is different and that their problems must be treated individually. He emphasises the importance of diet and environment sufferers must build up their immune system. Even the smallest interference with that delicate mechanism, the human body, can trigger off problems out of all proportion to the cause. For example, silver mercury amalgam fillings in teeth can affect your health. This book draws attention to a variety of factors and explains how they can be dealt with to improve the quality of life for all MS sufferers. It is a relevant and important alternative approach to the problem.

Murder, Madness and Mayhem: Twenty-Five Tales of True Crime and Dark History
by Mike BrowneMike Browne, host of the popular Canadian podcast Dark Poutine, chronicles some of his all-time favourite stories of true crime and dark history from Canada and around the world.Divided into four sections —Murders with a Twist, Perpetual Puzzles, The Madness of Crowds and Notable Disasters — all the stories in this collection (except two) are brand new and haven’t been covered by the podcast. In Murders with a Twist, Browne recounts seven true crime stories with atypical elements, including weird motives, unusual perpetrators and bizarre murder weapons. In one case, we meet a man who is willing to kill to possess a human voice. In another, two women play a deadly game to prove their love to each other.Perpetual Puzzles covers six stories that remain unresolved and will leave you with more questions than answers. They include the archaeological find of the century, which turns out to be something far more sinister, as well as the discovery of a dead man on the beach with a mysterious clue in his pocket. The Madness of Crowds reveals that murder and mayhem are sometimes a group effort. We meet two young Canadians who leave home one summer to find work and instead end up on a murder spree, and a bizarre California cult that asks its members to topple the Mormon church. The book concludes with Notable Disasters, which describes some of the most tragic and deadly events in history, including the deadly tsunami in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, as well as the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in London in June 2017.The book includes a foreword by Alan R. Warren, bestselling true crime author and host of the House of Mystery Radio Show.
