Possessing Spirits and Healing Selves

by Rebecca Seligman

Spirit possession involves the displacement of a human's conscious self by that of a powerful other - a spirit, god, or demon - who temporarily occupies the human's body. To many, spirit possession is quintessentially exotic, a novelty, an example of the ways in which "others" are fundamentally different. In this book, Seligman shows that, far from being exotic and "other," spirit possession mediumship represents a privileged site for understanding a number of fundamental aspects of human experience - especially those involved with interactions among meaning, embodiment, and subjectivity. Using a diverse set of ethnographic, psychological, and biological data gathered during fieldwork among spirit possession mediums of the Candomble religion in Northeastern Brazil, she explores how everyday and religious practices and meanings shape and interact with the bodily experiences and psychophysiological states of Candomble mediums, both before and after their initiations, and how such interactions shape their experiences of selfhood. Post-AIDS Discourse in Health Communication: Sociocultural Interpretations (Routledge Research in Health Communication)

by Ambar Basu

This book examines the discourse of a "post-AIDS" culture, and the medical-discursive shift from crisis and death to survival and living. Contributions from a diverse group of international scholars interrogate and engage with the cultural, social, political, scientific, historical, global, and local consumptions of the term "post-AIDS" from the perspective of meaning-making on health, illness, and well-being. The chapters critique and connect meanings of "post-AIDS" to topics such as neoliberalism; race, gender, and advocacy; disclosure; relationships and intimacy; stigma and structural violence; family and community; migration; work; survival; normativity; NGOs, transnational organizations; aging and end-of-life care; the politics of ART and PrEP; mental illness; campaigns; social media; and religion. Using a range of methodological tools, the scholarship herein asks how "post-AIDS" or the "End of the Epidemic" is communicated and made sense of in everyday discourse, what current meanings are circulated and consumed on and around HIV and AIDS, and provides thorough commentary and critique of a "post-AIDS" time. This book will be an essential read for scholars and students of health communication, sociology of health and illness, medical humanities, political science, and medical anthropology, as well as for policy makers and activists.

Postcolonial Astrology: Reading the Planets through Capital, Power, and Labor

by Alice Sparkly Kat

Tapping into the political power of magic and astrology for social, community, and personal transformation. In a cross-cultural approach to understanding astrology as a magical language, Alice Sparkly Kat unmasks the political power of astrology, showing how it can be channeled as a force for collective healing and liberation.Too often, magic and astrology are divorced from their potency and cultural contexts: co-opted by neoliberalism, used as a force of oppression, or distilled beyond recognition into applications that belie their individual and collective power. By looking at the symbolic and etymological histories of the sun, moon, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter, we can trace and understand the politics of magic--and challenge our own practices, interrogate our truths, and reshape our institutions to build better frameworks for communities of care.Fearless, radical, and fresh, Sparkly Kat's Postcolonial Astrology ushers in a new wave of astrology revival, refusing to apologize for its magickism and connecting its power to the spirituality and politics we need now. Intersectional, inclusive, and geared towards queer and POC communities, it uses our historical and collective constructs of the planets, sun, and moon to re-chart our subconscious history, redefine the body in the world, and assert our politics of the personal, in astrology and all things.

Postdiabetic: An Easy-to-Follow 9-Week Guide to Reversing Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes

by Ruben Ruiz Eric Edmeades

A proven plan to reverse prediabetes and type 2 diabetes with manageable changes to improve your life.If you are struggling with type 2 diabetes, obesity, or hypertension, you should know two important things:1) It is not your fault.2) It is your responsibility to turn things around. The truth is that the hardship caused by type 2 diabetes is fueled by profit-seeking food manufacturers. And while it is easy to place blame on the food industry, it is also important to understand our own roles in creating these circumstances. You might wonder why, if type 2 diabetes is reversible, it is commonly treated as a lifelong condition. The answer might shock you: It is being treated that way because it is profitable to treat it that way. It is a lot more profitable to sell drugs to treat lifelong conditions than to show people how to turn them around. But here's the good news: it doesn't have to be this way.In this book, Eric Edmeades and Dr. Ruben Ruiz give you a solid, step-by-step plan that just might reverse the condition for you. Over the course of 9 weeks, you'll learn how to make subtle changes to your lifestyle and deep changes to your psychology. You'll look at what you eat, when you eat it, and why you eat it. You'll begin to move your body into a primarily fat-burning metabolism and away from your current sugar-burning metabolism, learn more about seasonal eating, and reap the benefits of cyclical eating patterns.By the end of this program, you will have a clear understanding of the way the seasons work in concert with your body, and how you can turn around your type 2 diabetes and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Then Gray's twelve-year-old science nerd sister, Maggie, is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Gray learns that the cancer may have environmental causes and sets out to uncover the cause and make Maggie better. Postfeminist Education?: Girls and the Sexual Politics of Schooling (Foundations and Futures of Education)

by Jessica Ringrose

This book challenges a contemporary postfeminist sensibility grounded not only in assumptions that gender and sexual equality has been achieved in many Western contexts, but that feminism has gone ‘too far’ with women and girls now overtaking men and boys - positioned as the new victims of gender transformations. The book is the first to outline and critique how educational discourses have directly fed into postfeminist anxieties, exploring three postfeminist panics over girls and girlhood that circulate widely in the international media and popular culture. First it explores how a masculinity crisis over failing boys in school has spawned a backlash discourse about overly successful girls; second it looks at how widespread anxieties over girls becoming excessively mean and/or violent have positioned female aggression as pathological; third it examines how incessant concerns over controlling risky female sexuality underpin recent sexualisation of girls' moral panics. The book outlines how these postfeminist panics over girlhood have influenced educational policies and practices in areas such as academic achievement, anti-bullying strategies and sex-education curriculum, making visible the new postfeminist, sexual politics of schooling. Moving beyond media or policy critique, however, this book offers new theoretical and methodological tools for researching postfeminism, girlhood and education. It engages with current theoretical debates over possibilities for girls’ agency and empowerment in postfeminist, neo-liberal contexts of sexual regulation. It also elaborates new psychosocial and feminist Deleuzian methodological approaches for mapping subjectivity, affectivity and social change. Drawing on two UK empirical research projects exploring teen-aged girls’ own perspectives and responses to postfeminist panics, the book shows how real girls are actually negotiating notions of girls as overly successful, mean, violent, aggressive and sexual. The data offers rich insight into girls’ gendered, raced and classed experiences at school and beyond, exploring teen peer cultures, friendship, offline and online sexual identities, and bullying and cyberbullying. The analysis illuminates how and when girls take up and identify with postfeminist trends, but also at times attempt to re-work, challenge and critique the contradictory discourses of girlhood and femininity. In this sense the book offers an opportunity for girls to ‘talk back’ to the often simplistic either wildly celebratory or crisis-based sensationalism of postfeminist panics over girlhood. This book will be essential reading for those interested in feminism, girlhood, media studies, gender and education.

Posthuman Gaming: Avatars, Gamers, and Entangled Subjectivities (Routledge Advances in Game Studies)

by Poppy Wilde

Posthuman Gaming: Avatars, Gamers, and Entangled Subjectivities explores the relationship between avatar and gamer in the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game World of Warcraft, to examine notions of entangled subjectivity, affects and embodiments – what it means and how it feels to be posthuman. With a focus on posthuman subjectivity, Wilde considers how we can begin to articulate ourselves when the boundary between self and other is unclear. Drawing on fieldnotes of her own gameplay experiences, the author analyses how subjectivity is formed in ways that defy a single individual notion of "self", and explores how different practices, feelings, and societal understandings can disrupt strict binaries and emphasise our posthumanism. She interrogates if one can speak of an "I" in the face of posthuman multiplicity, before exploring different analytical themes, beginning with how acting theories might be posthumanised and articulate the relationship between avatar and gamer. She then defines posthuman empathy and explains how this is experienced in gaming, before addressing the need to account for boredom, the complexity of nostalgia, and ways death and loss are experienced through gaming. This volume will appeal to a broad audience and is particularly relevant to scholars and students of cultural studies, media studies, humanities, and game studies. Chapters 2 and 7 of this book are freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Postpartum Psychiatric Problems

by James Alexander Hamilton

The present volume deals with the illness nowadays known as Postpartum Depression (PPD). The book was written by Dr. James Alexander Hamilton, a California psychiatrist who in 1980 founded the Marcé Society; its aim was to bring together psychiatrists, endocrinologists and social scientists to foster communication about PPD, which directly aligned with Dr. Hamilton’s goal, since 1955, to encourage physicians in the United States to better understand PPD in order to help victims of the illness.“Psychiatric illness which develops after childbirth is one of the most challenging problems of modern medicine. It usually occurs acutely and unexpectedly from a state of apparent good health. The patient is disabled at precisely the moment when her responsibilities and her capacity for enjoyment of life are greatest. Successful treatment of this kind of illness is most rewarding.“This book represents a collection and integration of widely scattered information which bears on the diagnosis and treatment of postpartum psychiatric problems. Some of this information relates to neglected physiological factors in these problems.”—Dr. James Alexander Hamilton
