Sexual Liberation, Socialist Style: Communist Czechoslovakia and the Science of Desire, 1945–1989
by Kateřina LiškováThis is the first account of sexual liberation in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Kateřina Lišková reveals how, in the case of Czechoslovakia, important aspects of sexuality were already liberated during the 1950s – abortion was legalized, homosexuality decriminalized, the female orgasm came into experts’ focus – and all that was underscored by an emphasis on gender equality. However, with the coming of Normalization, gender discourses reversed and women were to aspire to be caring mothers and docile wives. Good sex was to cement a lasting marriage and family. In contrast to the usual Western accounts highlighting the importance of social movements to sexual and gender freedom, here we discover, through the analysis of rich archival sources covering forty years of state socialism in Czechoslovakia, how experts, including sexologists, demographers and psychologists, advised the state on population development, marriage and the family to shape the most intimate aspects of people’s lives.
Sexual Outlaw, Erotic Mystic
by Vere Chappell Mary K. GreerSex, Magick, Aleister Crowley, Orgasms, Erotic Dances, Angelic Beings, Revolutionary Activism, Liberation, Persecution, Defiance, and Suicide.Persecuted by Anthony Comstock and his Society for the Suppression of Vice, this turn-of-the-century heroine was also a spiritualist who learned many secrets of high magick through her claimed wedlock to an angelic being. Born in Philadelphia in 1857, Ida Craddock became involved in occultism around the age of thirty. She attended classes at the Theosophical Society and began studying a tremendous amount of materials on various occult subjects. She taught correspondence courses to women and newly married couples to educate them on the sacred nature of sex, maintaining that her explicit knowledge came from her nightly experiences with an angel named Soph. In 1902, she was arrested under New York's anti-obscenity laws and committed suicide to avoid life in an asylum. Now for the first time, scholar Vere Chappell has compiled the most extensive collection of Craddock's work including original essays, diary excerpts, and suicide letters--one to her mother and one to the public.
Sexual Selection in Homo sapiens
by Menelaos ApostolouThe present book aims to examine how sexual selection works in the human species. Almost all scholarly effort focuses on sexual selection in non-human species and extrapolates the findings to the human one. However, human mating has a unique pattern not found in any other species, namely parental influence over mate choice. Across preindustrial societies, the typical pattern of long-term mating is arranged marriage, where parents choose spouses for their children. By doing so, parents effectively become a sexual selection force. Traits that enhance an individual's chance to be selected as a son- or a daughter-in-law confer important reproductive advantages to those who are endowed with them, increasing in frequency in the population. The author has coined the term parental choice to describe the sexual selection force that arises from parental control over mating. He synthesizes extensive theoretical and empirical work in order to understand and model this force. The aim is to understand which factors give rise to parental choice and to combine these insights into constructing a more formal model. It also aims to further examine whether the predictions of the model fit the patterns of mating found across different types of human societies, and how the model can be used to understand the evolution of behavioral traits involved in mating. By synthesizing the various arguments put forward and published across the literature, the book offers a comprehensive argument and overview of an aspect of sexual selection unique to our species. Furthermore, the book revises and extends previously made arguments and models, while it provides useful insights on how the proposed revision of sexual selection theory can enable us to understand a wide range of human behavioral phenomena. It should be key reading for those interested in studying sexual selection in general and in the Homo sapiens species in particular.

Sexuality: All That Matters
by Louise FoxcroftSexuality is the quality and expression of our sexual nature or instincts. The word may be an eighteenth century coinage, but as this brilliant new study by award-winning historian Louise Foxcroft shows, sexuality has fascinated and (sometimes) terrified us since much further back than that. From proscription to prescription, and from humour to anxiety - none of which are as far apart as they seem - Sexuality: All That Matters explores the vast variety of sexual response and experience over time. The author shows how any appraisal of sexuality requires an understanding of difference, of what the constantly shifting target of 'normal' means, of secrecy and knowledge, and of who decides who should know, say or do what, and to whom. This accessible and readable book will appeal to both students and general readers, giving a fascinating introduction to sexuality - and what matters most about it. All That Matters about sexuality. All That Matters books are a fast way to get right to the heart of key issues.
