As Many Nows as I Can Get
by Shana YoungdahlA Seventeen Best Book of the YearA New York Public Library Top Ten Best Book of the YearA Kirkus Best Book of the YearFor fans of All the Bright Places, Looking for Alaska, and I'll Give You the Sun comes "a daring, inventive story about love and loss and longing, reminding us that every choice can be a new chance. A dazzling, not-to-be-missed debut." —Kathleen Glasgow, author of Girl in PiecesIn one impulsive moment the summer before they leave for college, overachievers Scarlett and David plunge into an irresistible swirl of romance, particle physics, and questionable decisions. Moving between the present and the past, this is the story of a grounded girl who's pulled into a lightning-strike romance with an electric-charged boy, and the enormity of the aftermath.Scarlett and David have known each other all their lives in small-town Colorado, where David is just another mountain in the background, until, one day, he is suddenly so much more than part of the scenery. David is magnetic, spontaneous, a gravitational force. And Scarlett, pragmatic, wry, eye on the future, welcomes the pull he has on her even as she resists it. Drawn to his wild energy, to the relief she feels in throwing off the weight of everyone&’s expectations, Scarlett still can&’t ignore the tug of her own hopes and ambitions, while David struggles between his feelings for her, which might be deeper than either of them will admit, and his own destructive impulses.Heartbreaking, hopeful, and unflinchingly honest, this is a deeply moving account of a girl dealing with grief and guilt, and learning to reconcile who she thinks she needs to be with the person she&’s been all along. It&’s an aching, transporting reminder that between the past that shapes us and the future ahead, we have only the present to forgive ourselves and forge ahead."Deeply authentic . . . As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl
by John ColapintoBrian and Bruce Reimer were born as normal identical twin boys. At 8 months of age, they developed a urinary problem, which their Winnipeg hospital said could be easily cured via circumcision. The day they were scheduled for that, a doctor who did not normally do this procedure was in charge. As a result, Bruce lost his penis altogether. Dr. John Money of Johns Hopkins Hospital, who had been treating intersexed babies by genital surgery, saw this as the perfect empirical study of nurture over nature. These were developmentally-normal identical twin boys. Following this, Bruce was castrated, his name changed to Brenda and he was raised as a girl. However, Brenda's personality did not conform, no matter how much the family and others tried to nurture the child as a girl. Neither twin was told of their background. In their early teens, Brenda rebelled. Eventually, she was told the truth and felt "normal", she was indeed the boy she had always felt internally. She changed her name to David, as one who slew the incomparably-sized Goliath. The rest of the book tells how David's life developed from there forward to adulthood, marriage, and fatherhood. It also covers Dr. Money's cover-up of the study results as not the positive picture he had reported consistently over the years, and details his downfall in the medical profession. Of note, is that the study, which was reported as successful nurture over nature, was constantly used in feminist rhetoric at the time about gender roles. Money was also an early co-founder of the Gender Identity Clinic at Johns Hopkins, involved with transsexual procedures. The author began this investigation for a Rolling Stone magazine article. Later, David Reimer decided to let his story become public for the education of others, and asked Colapinto to do the writing. There are three vulgar sex terms, minor description of pornographic pictures used by the doctor, and a few uses of the word "God."

As We Think, So We Are
by James Allen Ruth L MillerDREAM LOFTY DREAMS, AND AS YOU DREAM, SO YOU SHALL BECOME. As We Think, So We Are, the fifth book in the Library of Hidden Knowledge, invites readers to explore the pioneering teachings of James Allen, one of the first leaders of the self-help movement. Dr. Ruth Miller offers modern translations of three of Allen's most insightful essays. Using clear, concise language paired with practical applications, Miller creates an accessible way to delve into and explore the fundamental processes that determine how we interact with--and understand--the world. Allen's seminal theories in metaphysics introduced millions in the last century to the Law of Attraction, one of the most transformative paths to fulfillment in the modern age. In As We Think, So We Are, we find Allen's writing to be as important and life changing today as it was a hundred years ago. As Allen put it, "All that we are is the result of what we have thought. It is founded in our thoughts; it is made up of our thoughts."

They were able to accept what I thought were outrageous situations. And I wanted to learn how they did it."
As a Man Thinketh
by James AllenThe famous New Thought classic on the power of positive thinking by the British philosophical writer known as a pioneer of the self-help movement. As a Man Thinketh is James Allen’s third book, first published in 1903. In it, he details how man is the creator and shaper of his destiny by the thoughts which he thinks. He rises and falls in exact accordance with the character of the thoughts which he entertains. His environment is the result of what he has thought and done in the past, and his circumstances in the future are being shaped and built by his present desires, aspirations, thoughts and actions. He therefore who chooses and pursues a particular line of thought, consciously builds his own destiny.Part of the New Thought Movement, Allen reveals the secrets to having the most fulfilling existence possible, and it’s easier than any of us could have imagined. The title for the essay comes from the Bible: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he,” Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7. In more than a century, As a Man Thinketh has become an inspirational classic, selling millions of copies worldwide and bringing faith, inspiration, and self-healing to all who have encountered it.In this new edition of As a Man Thinketh, readers will be enthralled by James Allen’s thoughts and direction to take charge of their own destiny, as it has for over 100 years.
As in the Heart, So in the Earth: Reversing the Desertification of the Soul and the Soil
by Yehudi Menuhin Pierre RabhiThe world’s leading expert on reversing soil desertification shows how ecology can flourish only when spiritual elements are present• Uses a parable from the African oral tradition to provide a living testimony of what has been lost with the rise of modern technology• Provides a vital account of the strong relationship between soil and soul and how this relationship can be restoredAs in the Heart, So in the Earth is a strong indictment of a civilization that, while seeking domination over the earth, mutilates, tortures, and desacralizes it. For Pierre Rabhi ecology is inseparable from spirituality. He shows how the growing desertification of North Africa is a reflection of the “desert” that is claiming the hearts and souls of the inhabitants of the Western world--how dead soil is mirrored in our deadened souls--and how reconciliation with Mother Earth must be accompanied by relearning our ancestors’ reverence for the soil.Using a traditional African parable grounded in the very wisdom of the earth, Pierre Rabhi seeks to initiate the reader into a time when the people that dwelled on this planet did so harmoniously and could converse easily with the land. Village elder Tyemoro recounts the gradual destruction of his village’s culture and all that has sustained it as the miracles promised by modern technology brought more harm than good. This same drama is recurring throughout the world, where indigenous value systems that have endured for millennia are torn apart by contact with modern civilization. Yet Rahbi offers hope--if those in the modern world will stop to hear the words of their ancestors who worked the land, for our destiny is linked irrevocably to that of the earth.

Asgard.
Asgard: Northern Magic
by Olga Kryuchkova; Elena KryuchkovaThis book will acquaint you with many of Norse paganism’s key concepts and practices, specifically those originating in Scandinavia, Germany and Iceland. Norse paganism is the ancient religion of the Germanic peoples and is often associated with runic magic. Runes are ancient symbols that were used by the priests and magicians of long ago during the consecration of acts of magic, while predicting the future and during the assembly of amulets. Norse paganism is a lens for viewing the world that differs from those of the people of the South and East; people developed their own philosophy in the harsh climate of the North. There are several branches of Norse paganism, with one of the main ones being Troth. Troth is a path through which an aspirant may learn about the Norse gods and goddesses as well as about the cultural traditions of the Norse people. Another branch is the runic galdr, which revolves heavily around a constant, magic induced transformation of runes. Galdr is a specific magical technique which magicians use to change the inner and outer worlds according to their own desires. Seidhr is yet another branch of Norse paganism. Like Norse runeology, Seidhr involves various signs and symbols and comes with its own set of techniques, but besides that, the two hold very little in common despite popular misconception. Followers of seidhr come under a trance during which they come to understand the will of the gods. This book is written in a simple and comprehensible manner, as it is intended to serve a wide range of readers interested in ancient occultist teachings, alternate history, mythology, runic magic, runic meditation and ancient Germanic and Scandinavian customs, rituals and beliefs. The authors of this book have worked to forge extensive scattered materials on Norse paganism into one complete work. In engaging with the pages of this book, you will become familiar with the realm of the ancient Northern gods, the prayers recited i
Ashamed to Die: Silence, Denial, and the AIDS Epidemic in the South
by Andrew SkerrittBy focusing on a small town in South Carolina, this study of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the South reveals the hard truths of an ongoing and complex issue. Skerritt contends that the United States has failed to adequately address the threat of HIV and AIDS in communities of color and that taboos about love, race, and sexuality--combined with Southern conservatism, white privilege, and black oppression--continue to create an unacceptable death toll. The heartbreak of America's failure comes alive through case studies of individuals such as Carolyn, a wild child whose rebellion coincided with the advent of AIDS, and Nita, a young woman searching for love and trapped in an abusive relationship. The results are most visible at the town's segregated burial ground where dozens of young black men and women who have died from AIDS are laid to rest. Not only a call to action and awareness, this is a true story of how persons of faith, enduring love, and limitless forgiveness can inspire others by serving as guides for poor communities facing a public health threat burdened with conflicting moral and social conventions.
Ashes and Stones: A Journey Through Scotland in Search of Women Hunted as Witches
by Allyson ShawA moving and personal journey, along rugged coasts and through remote villages and cities, in search of the traces of those accused of witchcraft in seventeenth-century Scotland.'It's summer. I stand where perhaps Ellen stood, in this ground thick with new thistle and long grass. She would have kenned this coast in all weathers: in the summer when it was as gentle as a lake and in the winter, with the high winds and stinging salt spray.' In Ashes and Stones we visit modern memorials and standing stones, and roam among forests and hedge mazes, folklore and political fantasies. From fairy hills to forgotten caves, we explore a spellbound landscape. Allyson Shaw untangles the myth of witchcraft and gives voice to those erased by it. Her elegant and lucid prose weaves together threads of history and feminist reclamation to create a vibrant memorial. This is the untold story of the witches' monuments of Scotland and the women's lives they mark. Ashes and Stones is a trove of folklore linking the lives of contemporary women to the horrors of the past, a record of resilience and a call to choose and remember our ancestors.
