The Stubborn Fat Fix: Eat Right to Lose Weight and Cure Metabolic Burnout without Hunger or Exercise

by Keith Berkowitz Valerie Berkowitz

Named a Best Book 2010 in the Health: Diet/Weight Loss Category Do you feel tired all the time? Do you feel hungry between meals, even if you've just eaten? Do you crave candy, soda, or coffee, especially in the mid-afternoon? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a metabolic disadvantage. Most diet plans fail because they don't address the underlying metabolic conditions that contribute to increased hunger and weight gain. In fact, they often worsen the problem by cutting calories and prompting food cravings. This further stresses your metabolism and leaves you hungrier—and heavier—than ever. The Stubborn Fat Fix remedies this by identifying and treating metabolic imbalances. Based on the results of simple quizzes, you'll choose between two eating plans that prescribe the ideal foods needed to repair your metabolic disorder and turn off faulty hunger signals. On both plans, you'll lose weight by doing something that seems counterintuitive—eat more, move less—in order to heal your metabolism. You can even incorporate "luxury" foods—indulging in ice cream, salty snacks, bread, wine or beer, or even chocolate—to stay on track without feeling deprived. A tailored supplement program, carefully controlled exercise, and stress-reduction techniques complete the metabolic cure. Even better, once your metabolism is in balance, you will not only permanently drop pounds but also improve your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and energy levels for overall better health. Hundreds of the Berkowitzes' patients, like those profiled in the book, have successfully lost up to 70 pounds with this plan. With The Stubborn Fat Fix—featuring more than 30 delicious recipes and the exclusive Fiber Ratio tool created by Valerie to help you get the most out of your favorite foods—you, too, can lose that stubborn fat forever.

Stuck in Time: The Tragedy of Childhood Mental Illness

by Lee Gutkind

A harrowing exploration of one of the country&’s most troubling hidden shames: the widespread neglect of disabled children by the institutions that have sworn to protect themFour-fifths of American children with serious mental health problems receive no professional treatment whatsoever. They are the product of an overextended and often neglectful system that, as Lee Gutkind writes, has reached the level of insanity. Following the stories of three children—Daniel, Meggan, and Terri—Stuck in Time chronicles the tragedies and injustices wrought not only by the deficiencies of the mental healthcare system, but by government policymakers who have failed to address the problem. Through these children and their families, Gutkind explores mental illness as both a scientific and social issue, from the harsh economic realities of supporting a disabled child to the immense difficulty of finding a suitable counselor.Written with passion and piercing detail, Stuck in Time is a poignant examination of three families fighting against impossible circumstances, and of a system too inflexible to accommodate the helpless victims it is meant to support.

Stuck on Fast Forward: Youth with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Youth with Special Needs)

by Shirley Brinkerhoff

Connor didn't have too many problems before he started school. That is, if you don't count the little things, like the time he tried to mow the lawn with his dad's riding mower (he ruined the engine when he poured oil in the gas tank); or the time he dressed up like Santa Claus and tried to go down the chimney of the backyard brick barbeque (he got stuck and the fire department had to come pull him out); or the experiment he conducted on the family beagle to see if she liked Tabasco sauce on her dog food (the vet threatened to call the ASPCA). The real trouble didn't start until Connor began kindergarten. The notes started coming home with Connor on his very first day. They said things like: "Does not play well with others," "Is disruptive in class," and "Teacher requests conference with parents." Every day that Connor brought home another note--which was most days--his parents looked a little grayer and a little more tired. Connor couldn't seem to sit still or pay attention; and all too often, his impulsiveness led to inappropriate behavior. Though his parents do not know it yet, Connor has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. ADHD is an increasingly common diagnosis for school-age and preschool children today. The debate over diagnosis and treatment of symptoms is intense. In Stuck on Fast Forward: Youth with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, you will learn about the many sides of this common and controversial condition. Along the way, you will read more about Connor and how he and his family learn to live with the challenges of ADHD.

Studies in No-Self Physicalism

by Feng Ye

This book demonstrates how a radical version of physicalism (‘No-Self Physicalism’) can offer an internally coherent and comprehensive philosophical worldview. It first argues that a coherent physicalist should explicitly treat a cognitive subject merely as a physical thing and should not vaguely assume an amorphous or even soul-like subject or self. This approach forces the physicalist to re-examine traditional core philosophical notions such as truth, analyticity, modality, apriority because our traditional understandings of them appear to be predicated on a cognitive subject that is not literally just a physical thing. In turn, working on the assumption that a cognitive subject is itself completely physical, namely a neural network-based robot programmed by evolution (hence the term ‘No-Self’), the book proposes physicalistic theories on conceptual representation, truth, analyticity, modality, the nature of mathematics, epistemic justification, knowledge, apriority and intuition, as well as a physicalistic ontology. These are meant to show that this No-Self Physicalism, perhaps the most minimalistic and radical version of physicalism proposed to date, can accommodate many aspects that have traditionally interested philosophers. Given its refreshingly radical approach and painstakingly developed content, the book is of interest to anyone who is seeking a coherent philosophical worldview in this age of science.

Studies on Men's Health and Fertility

by Ashok Agarwal Juan G Alvarez Robert John Aitken

Studies on Men's Health and Fertility provides a comprehensive series of up-to-the-minute reviews addressing the role of oxidative stress in the aetiology of reproductive pathologies in the male. This volume represents by far the most detailed, authoritative review of the field that has been produced to date. The text encompasses the basic science of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by mammalian spermatozoa, the way in which these highly reactive molecules are processed by the germ line and the physiological significance of this redox activity in the generation of a functional gamete. The factors responsible for perturbing the delicate balance between physiological redox signaling on the one hand and oxidative stress on the other are also extensively reviewed and some of the first clues concerning the underlying mechanisms (age, heat, infection, cryostorage, aberrant lipid metabolism), clearly identified. From a clinical perspective there are chapters setting out the methods we should be using to diagnose oxidative stress in the male germ line, a clinical perspective on the aetiology of this condition and detailed considerations of the most suitable means of ameliorating such stress from a therapeutic point of view. Studies on Men's Health and Fertility is intended to provide clinicians and scientists with a snap shot of the current status of this exciting, rapidly moving field. The book will be of value to clinicians interested in strategies for the management of oxidative stress in their infertility patients and scientists wishing to understand the molecular mechanisms underpinning the generation of ROS by these cells and its pathophysiological significance. It was not so long ago that the ability of spermatozoa to generate ROS was a hotly disputed topic. With the publication of this book such doubts can finally be laid to rest. There is now no doubt that these cells actively generate ROS, that oxidative stress is a major contributor to defects in male reproductive health and that the successful clinical management of this condition depends on developing a deeper understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms. In this quest, Studies on Men's Health and Fertility will be seen as a clear and important milestone.

Studies on Women's Health

by Ashok Agarwal Botros Rizk Nabil Aziz

This volume covers data describing the role of free radicals and antioxidants that deal with clinical and pre-clinical trials, as well as basic research in the area of women's health. There is increasing evidence that oxidative stress is a causative, or at least a supporting factor in female pathology and infertility. During advancing gestational age, oxidative stress biomakers rise. Oxidative stress plays a regulatory role in transcription, signal transduction, gene expression and membrane trafficking. A search on Pub Med shows 449 papers have been published to date related to women's health disorders and use of antioxidants in a variety of disease that are prevalent in women, such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, obesity and restless leg syndrome.

A Study Course In Homoeopathy

by Phyllis Speight

Some years ago Health Science Press issued a correspondence course in Homeopathy. It proved invaluable to students, providing a sound background of training in Homoeopathy. At that time graduating students sought a Diploma or Certificate, or other recognition of their new qualification. However, it was felt that a Diploma could not be awarded as such a document would have no official recognition in either the alternative or orthodox medical world and would, therefore, be of little value to the student. When the correspondence course was discontinued the remaining stock was sold as a book with the test papers cancelled. This work proved to be exceptionally popular. In view of the guidance that this book offers to the seriously interested student of Homoeopathy, the course has been revised by Phyllis Speight. This book contains twelve essential lessons and their corresponding test papers. Specimen answers at the end of the book will enable students to compare and evaluate their knowledge.
