Becoming a Sage: Discovering Life's Lessons, One Story at a Time

by Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse

The art of becoming a sage mixes personal life experience with learning from ancient and historical people who have gathered their own wisdom. Sages know that they stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before. In Becoming a Sage, international bestselling author and master storyteller Wegscheider-Cruse encourages readers to find their own personal path through a series of short stories, lessons learned and prudent quotes that validate each experience. Her stories span deep lows and soaring highs—a lifelong journey of lessons learned and a celebration of living with those lessons. Each tale will bring solace, comfort, and joy to readers, and inspire and teach them how to record their own stories. It will bring readers through guilt, fear, and forgiveness to reach personal transformation. Wegscheider-Cruse knows that it's not always easy to tell our stories; they can be scary or feel too private. But, as we grow older, we find courage and confidence by deciding to become "a teller of the truth." Our sharing is the legacy that we leave to family and friends; Becoming a Sage is the remarkable legacy Wegscheider-Cruse leaves to us all.

Becoming a Visible Man

by Jamison Green

The entry to this book is the opening of a college lecture. Green guides a dialogue with students, leading them to a new way of perceiving sex vs. gender vs. sexual orientation. At a later point, he uses a computer analogy: hardware is sex (the body), gender is software (the soul or heart or mind), then the operating system is the congruence or lack of between the two. What if your hardware is a PC running Windows but your software is all MAC based? How long do you suffer in silence before taking action to have them be the same, work together, and feel whole? Green skillfully weaves through multiple related topics of transsexuality, with the focus on female to male, a rapidly growing percentage of the community. He includes current history of the movement to create community rather than isolated individuals, a community far behind its opposite of male to female people. He cites the slower advances in surgical techniques, plus the unwillingness of the "System" to grant them entry. Green, like many others, is not satisfied with the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's Standards of Care, which sets the "rules" and timelines of processes that most Gender Identity Clinics follow. Green found himself not only transitioning into a male body, but into an activist role. He writes about issues related to hormones, explains surgery options and techniques, social and family ramifications, fears and facing discrimination and bigotry, emotions, sexuality, the push-pull desires of just blending in and being a "guy in the crowd" vs. a spokesman and advocate to further advance transsexual acceptance into mainstream society.

Not only was Lama Yeshe one of the most beloved Tibetan Buddhist masters of the late twentieth century, he was also a remarkably effective teacher and communicator. In Becoming the Compassion Buddha, just as he did with his bestselling Introduction to Tantra, he once again demonstrates his extraordinary ability to present practices that once were considered arcane or hidden in a way that is clear and understandable to the general reader. In these pages, Lama Yeshe guides readers through the tantric practice of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion, basing his instructions on a text written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age nineteen. He gives special emphasis to mahamudra, the emptiness of one's own mind, and demystifies these esoteric techniques, clearly showing them for what they are: highly developed psychology. Throughout, Lama Yeshe presents his approachable teachings by drawing on examples from daily life and introducing meditation practices that all can follow. Becoming the Compassion Buddha is an extraordinary book that opens new doors for countless readers.

Becomings: Pregnancy, Phenomenology, and Postmodern Dance (ISSN)

by Johanna Kirk

This book explores postmodern choreographic engagements of pregnant bodies in the US over the last 70 years.Johanna Kirk discusses how choreographers negotiate identification with the look of their pregnant bodies to maintain a sense of integrity as artists and to control representations of their gender and physical abilities while pregnant. Across chapters, the artists discussed include Anna Halprin, Trisha Brown, Twyla Tharp, Sandy Jamrog, Jane Comfort, Jody Oberfelder, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Miguel Gutiérrez, Yanira Castro, Noémie LaFrance, and Meg Foley. By presenting their bodies in performance, these artists demonstrate how their experiences surrounding pregnancy intersect not only with their artform and its history but also with their personal experiences of race, gender, and sexual identification. In these pages, Johanna Kirk argues that choreography offers them tools that are alternative to medicine (or other forms of social representation) for understanding what/how pregnant bodies do and feel and what they can mean for individuals and their communities. The works within these chapters invite readers to see dancing bodies and pregnant bodies in new ways and for their potential to manifest new possibilities. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars exploring dance, theatre and performance, race, and gender.

Bed Number Ten

by Sue Baier Mary Zimmeth Schomaker

A patient's personal view of long term care. Seen through the eyes of a patient totally paralyzed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, this moving book takes you through the psychological and physical pain of an eleven month hospital stay. BED NUMBER TEN reads like a compelling novel, but is entirely factual. You will meet: The ICU staff who learned to communicate with the paralyzed woman - and those who did not bother. The physicians whose visits left her baffled about her own case. The staff and physicians who spoke to her and others who did not recognize her presence. The nurse who tucked Sue tightly under the covers, unaware that she was soaking with perspiration. The nurse who took the time to feed her drop by drop, as she slowly learned how to swallow again. The physical therapist who could read her eyes and spurred her on to move again as if the battle were his own. In these pages, which reveal the caring, the heroism, and the insensitivity sometimes found in the health care fields, you may even meet people you know.

In fact, many states are beginning to alter preexisting ordinances in order to encourage more individuals to start beekeeping. No other hobby can simultaneously help save the world and bring sweet treats to your table!
