Critical Thinking in Psychology

by Robert J. Sternberg Diane F. Halpern Henry L. Roediger

Good scientific research depends on critical thinking at least as much as factual knowledge; psychology is no exception to this rule. And yet, despite the importance of critical thinking, psychology students are rarely taught how to think critically about the theories, methods, and concepts they must use. This book shows students and researchers how to think critically about key topics such as experimental research, statistical inference, case studies, logical fallacies, and ethical judgments.

Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis

by Tom Daschle Scott S. Greenberger Jeanne M. Lambrew

A much-needed and hard-hitting plan, from one of the great Democratic minds of our time, to reform America's broken health-care system. Undoubtedly, the biggest domestic policy issue in the coming years will be America's health-care system. Millions of Americans go without medical care because they can't afford it, and many others are mired in debt because they can't pay their medical bills. It's hard to think of another public policy problem that has lingered unaddressed for so long. Why have we failed to solve a problem that is such a high priority for so many citizens? Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle believes the problem is rooted in the complexity of the health-care issue and the power of the interest groups—doctors, hospitals, insurers, drug companies, researchers, patient advocates—that have a direct stake in it. Rather than simply pointing out the major flaws and placing blame, Daschle offers key solutions and creates a blueprint for solving the crisis. Daschle's solution lies in the Federal Reserve Board, which has overseen the equally complicated financial system with great success. A Fed-like health board would offer a public framework within which a private health-care system can operate more effectively and efficiently—insulated from political pressure yet accountable to elected officials and the American people. Daschle argues that this independent board would create a single standard of care and exert tremendous influence on every other provider and payer, even those in the private sector. After decades of failed incremental measures, the American health-care system remains fundamentally broken and requires a comprehensive fix. With his bold and forward-looking plan, Daschle points us to the solution.

Critique of Bored Reason: On the Confinement of the Modern Condition

by Dmitri Nikulin

Most of the core concepts of the Western philosophical tradition originate in antiquity. Yet boredom is strikingly absent from classical thought. In this philosophical study, Dmitri Nikulin explores the concept’s genealogy to argue that boredom is the mark of modernity.Nikulin contends that boredom is a specifically modern phenomenon. He provides a critical reconstruction of the concept of the modern subject as universal, rational, autonomous, and self-sufficient. Understanding itself in this way, this subject is at once the protagonist, playwright, director, and spectator of the staged drama of human existence. It is therefore inevitably monological, lonely, and alone, and can neither escape its own presence nor get rid of it. In other words, it is bored—and this boredom is the fundamental expression and symptom of the modern condition.Considering such thinkers as Descartes, Pascal, Kant, Kierkegaard, Kracauer, Heidegger, and Benjamin, Critique of Bored Reason places boredom on center stage in the philosophical critique of modernity. Nikulin also considers the alternative to the notion of the autonomous subject in the—nonbored and nonboring—dialogic and comic subject capable of shared existence with others.

Crones Don't Whine: Concentrated Wisdom for Juicy Women

by Jean Shinoda Bolen

"This juicy, witty, lovely book, shining with Wise Woman candor, is the perfect gift for any woman over 50. I savored it like a rare, well-aged wine, and I know you will too." JEAN SHINODA BOLEN'S GROUNDBREAKING EARLY work-most notably Goddesses in Everywoman- helped a generation of women realize their potential and their value. Half a million copies later, that book still affects the lives of women. In this new book, Crones Don't Whine, Bolen's playful sense of humor and keen insight combine to offer women thirteen qualities to cultivate. Engage in these small practices and you're bound to be a happier person who's doing her bit to make the world a better place. "These qualities are not cultivated overnight," Bolen writes. Crone years are "growing" years, when women can devote their time, energy, and creativity to what really matters to them. Bolen offers us a blueprint: Crones don't whine. They're juicy, and they trust their own instincts. They don't grovel. They do meditate. They choose the path with heart. Crones are fierce about what matters most to them. They speak the truth with compassion. They listen to their bodies, reinvent themselves as needed, and savor the good in their lives. Turn to these thirteen brief pieces again and again, in bad times and good, alone and with others-because "Crones Together Can Change the World," as Bolen points out in an inspirational, call-to-arms bonus essay. "Crones Don't Whine is a delightful and profound handbook for crones and would-be crones filled with wisdom, humor, passion, and just plain good advice. Don't even think of growing old without it!

Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery

by Cathryn Jakobson Ramin

The acclaimed author of Carved in Sand—a veteran investigative journalist who endured persistent back pain for decades—delivers the definitive book on the subject: an essential examination of all facets of the back pain industry, exploring what works, what doesn't, what may cause harm, and how to get on the road to recovery. In her effort to manage her chronic back pain, investigative reporter Cathryn Jakobson Ramin spent years and a small fortune on a panoply of treatments. But her discomfort only intensified, leaving her feeling frustrated and perplexed. As she searched for better solutions, she exposed a much bigger problem. Costing roughly $100 billion a year, spine medicine—often ineffective and sometimes harmful —exemplified the worst aspects of the U.S. health care system. The result of six years of intensive investigation, Crooked offers a startling look at the poorly identified risks of spine medicine, and provides practical advice and solutions. Ramin interviewed scores of spine surgeons, pain management doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, specialized bodywork practitioners. She met with many patients whose pain and desperation led them to make life-altering decisions, and with others who triumphed over their limitations. The result is a brilliant and comprehensive book that is not only important but essential to millions of back pain sufferers, and all types of health care professionals. Ramin shatters assumptions about surgery, chiropractic methods, physical therapy, spinal injections and painkillers, and addresses evidence-based rehabilitation options—showing, in detail, how to avoid therapeutic dead ends, while saving money, time, and considerable anguish. With Crooked, she reveals what it takes to outwit the back pain industry and get on the road to recovery.

Crop Circles, Jung, and the Reemergence of the Archetypal Feminine

by Gary S. Bobroff

Throwing light on the mysterious phenomenon of crop circles within the context of modern psychological reality, Crop Circles, Jung, and the Reemergence of the Archetypal Feminine in an engaging look at the science, history, and symbolic nature of the mystery of these annually occurring giant-scale works of art. Gary S. Bobroff offers a framework for the reader's own deeper consideration of crop circles by examining both the phenomenon itself and the nature of the era into which it has arrived, with special consideration of its relevance to Jungian archetypal psychology.Living in the moment of the death of one worldview and the birth of another, our culture suffers from a hyper-masculine inflation that has us alienated, imagining ourselves to be separate from each other and the earth. Today we are presented with environmental, social, and spiritual crises and mysteries that call us back toward closer participation with the world. Crop Circles--formed in living grain--exemplify the archetypal feminine nature of this moment's change: a calling toward conscious, felt engagement with a dynamic, living, mysterious world. Placing this modern "dream" into the context of modern reality, Crop Circles, Jung, and the Reemergence of the Archetypal Feminine considers what it means to live in an era of strange encounters with energies larger than ourselves.ContentsCHAPTER ONE - BODY OF EVIDENCECHAPTER TWO - WITCHES' RINGS & DEVIL'S TWISTSCHAPTER THREE - GREENING CIRCLESCHAPTER FOUR - ANTIQUE PAGEANTRYCHAPTER FIVE - REASON ALONECHAPTER SIX - A CALLING BACK DOWNCHAPTER SEVEN - THE REALITY OF THE PSYCHECHAPTER EIGHT - GHOSTS OF ELECTRICITYCHAPTER NINE - NEVER MINDCHAPTER TEN - FIELDS OF WAVING CORNACKNOWLEDGMENTSSELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHYNOTES

Cross-Cultural Comparisons on Surrogacy and Egg Donation: Interdisciplinary Perspectives from India, Germany and Israel

by Silke Schicktanz Sayani Mitra Tulsi Patel

This book is the first to bring together an interdisciplinary collection of essays on surrogacy and egg donation from three socially, legally and culturally distinct countries - India, Israel and Germany. It presents contributions from experts in the field of social and cultural sciences, bioethics, law as well as psychology and provides critical-reflective comparative analysis of the socio-ethical factors shaping surrogacy and egg donation practices across these three countries. This book highlights the importance of a comparative perspective to ‘make sense’ of controversies and transitions in this highly contested area of artificial reproductive technologies. It demonstrates how local developments cannot be isolated from global events and vice versa. Therefore, this volume can be used as a standard reference for anyone seeking to understand surrogacy and egg donation from a macro-perspective in the next decade.

Crossing Borders: Migration, Ethnicity and AIDS (Social Aspects of AIDS)

by Mary Haour-Knipe Richard Rector

Academics and activists have come together in this edited volume to tackle the complex issues surrounding migration and AIDS. The book sets the agenda for the development of HIV/AIDS prevention and care programme in migrant and minority ethnic communities. Issues covered include: migration patterns; policies for migrant health; legal and human rights issues as they affect mobile populations; racism and stigma; and HIV/AIDS prevention, care and programme evaluation as they pertain to migrant communities. The editors end with an overview of some of the key issues which remain to be addressed. The book identifies foundations on which bridges can be built, attempting to turn away from thinking of migration in terms of 'them ' and 'us', of public health in terms of protection, and from conceptualizing AIDS in terms of the infected and the non-infected. It is hoped that readers will take up the challenge, turn towards groups too often ignored, and ultimately work towards social justice and equity.

Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide

by Engineering Medicine National Academies of Sciences

In 2015, building on the advances of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals that include an explicit commitment to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. However, enormous gaps remain between what is achievable in human health and where global health stands today, and progress has been both incomplete and unevenly distributed. In order to meet this goal, a deliberate and comprehensive effort is needed to improve the quality of health care services globally. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide focuses on one particular shortfall in health care affecting global populations: defects in the quality of care. This study reviews the available evidence on the quality of care worldwide and makes recommendations to improve health care quality globally while expanding access to preventive and therapeutic services, with a focus in low-resource areas. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm emphasizes the organization and delivery of safe and effective care at the patient/provider interface. This study explores issues of access to services and commodities, effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and equity. Focusing on front line service delivery that can directly impact health outcomes for individuals and populations, this book will be an essential guide for key stakeholders, governments, donors, health systems, and others involved in health care.

Crowdsourcing during COVID-19: Case Studies in Health and Education

by Carmen Bueno Muñoz Luis R Murillo Zamorano José Ángel López Sánchez

Crowdsourcing is a means by which public interest is sought and leveraged to achieve specific goals, and this fascinating study highlights how the model has been used to challenge the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The book investigates what factors have encouraged the use of crowdsourcing during the pandemic, as well as those issues which have restricted its use. It is illustrated with four detailed case studies, covering the fields of education and health, demonstrating how crowdsourcing as a means of crisis management has, ultimately, been used to influence and develop public policy. A timely analysis of this emerging concept, the book will appeal to researchers and practitioners across health and social care, public policy and management, and the voluntary sector more generally.

Crucified Wisdom: Theological Reflection on Christ and the Bodhisattva (Comparative Theology: Thinking Across Traditions #6)

by S. Mark Heim

Winner of the Frederick Streng Book Award for Excellence in Buddhist-Christian Studies This work provides the first systematic discussion of the Bodhisattva path and its importance for constructive Christian theology. Crucified Wisdom examines specific Buddhist traditions, texts, and practices not as phenomena whose existence requires an apologetic justification but as wells of tested wisdom that invite theological insight. With the increasing participation of Christians in Buddhist practice, many are seeking a deeper understanding of the way the teachings of the two traditions might interface. Christ and the Bodhisattva are often compared superficially in Buddhist–Christian discussion. This text combines a rich exposition of the Bodhisattva path, using Śāntideva’s classic work the Bodicaryāvatāra and subsequent Tibetan commentators, with detailed reflection on its implications for Christian faith and practice.Author S. Mark Heim lays out root tensions constituted by basic Buddhist teachings on the one hand, and Christian teachings on the other, and the ways in which the Bodhisattva or Christ embody and resolve the resulting paradoxes in their respective traditions. An important contribution to the field of comparative theology in general and to the area of Buddhist–Christian studies in particular, Crucified Wisdom proposes that Christian theology can take direct instruction from Mahāyāna Buddhism in two respects: deepening its understanding of our creaturely nature through no-self insights, and revising its vision of divine immanence in dialogue with teachings of emptiness. Heim argues that Christians may affirm the importance of novelty in history, the enduring significance of human persons, and the Trinitarian reality of God, even as they learn to value less familiar, nondual dimensions of Christ’s incarnation, human redemption, and the divine life.Crucified Wisdom focuses on questions of reconciliation and atonement in Christian theology and explores the varying interpretations of the crucifixion of Jesus in Buddhist–Christian discussion. The Bodhisattva path is central for major contemporary Buddhist voices such as the Dalai Lama and Thích Nhât Hanh, who figure prominently as conversation partners in the text. This work will be of particular value for those interested in “dual belonging” in connection to these traditions.

Cruelty: A Book About Us

by Maggie Schein

Cruelty is such a ubiquitous and at the same time disturbing phenomenon that we take for granted that we understand what it is, and how it impacts the ways in which we think about our humanity as a moral condition—how we understand our moral significance. Cruelty: A Book About Us offers an accessible interrogation of cruelty and humanity, and, most critically, it provides a groundwork for us to raise questions collectively; it is an invitation for us all to join in the dialogue. Through academic studies, literary works, and’ personal stories and observations, this book provokes deeper insights into why cruel acts trouble our usual ways of articulating and addressing wrongness. Mining interdisciplinary sources, it excavates what we may not know we don't know and guides us in conversations about this profoundly evocative and often uneasy subject.
