Confessions of a Puppetmaster: A Hollywood Memoir of Ghouls, Guts, and Gonzo Filmmaking
by Adam Felber Charles BandRenowned producer, director, and “B movie” showman Charles Band takes readers on a wild romp through Hollywood’s decidedly un-Oscar-worthy underbelly, where mayhem and zombies reign supreme, and cheap thrills and entertainment are king"This book is a blast. It made me want to stay up all night and watch terrible movies." —Peter Sagal"One of the most entertaining film bios ever." —Larry Karaszewski"Reads like a Tarantino film written by Hunter S. Thompson." —BooklistZombies, aliens, a little skin, lots of gore—and even more laughs—the cinematic universe of Charles Band is legendary. From the toilet-invading creatures of Ghoulies to the time-travelling bounty hunter in Trancers to the pandemic-crashed Corona Zombies, Band has spent four decades giving B-movie lovers exactly what they love. In Confessions of a Puppetmaster, this congenial master of Grindhouse cinema tells his own story, uncut.Born into a family of artists, Band spent much of his childhood in Rome where his father worked in the film industry. Early visits to movie sets sealed young Charlie’s fate. By his twenties he had plunged into moviemaking himself and found his calling in exploitation movies—quick, low-budget efforts that exploit the zeitgeist and feed people’s desire for clever, low-brow entertainment. His films crossed genres, from vampire flicks to sci fi to erotic musical adaptations of fairy tales. As he came into his own as a director, he was the first to give starring roles to household names like Demi Moore, Helen Hunt, and Bill Maher.Off set, Band’s life has been equally epic. Returning to his beloved Italy, he bought both Dino De Laurentiis’s movie studio and a medieval castle. After Romania’s oppressive communist regime fell, he circumvented the U.S. State Department to shoot films in Dracula’s homeland. He made—and then lost—a moviemaking fortune. A visionary, Band was also at the vanguard of the transition to home video and streaming, making and distributing direct-to-video movies long before the major studios caught on.In this revealing tell-all, Band details the dizzying heights and catastrophic depths of his four decades in showbiz. A candid and engaging glimpse at Hollywood’s wild side, Confessions of a Puppetmaster is as entertaining as the movies that made this consummate schlockmeister famous.

Conjuring the Haint: The Haunting Poetics of Black Women (Margaret Walker Alexander Series in African American Studies)
by drea brownWhat does it mean to live as a ghost, to live with ghosts, and how might ghosts lead to a path of healing and reimagining? Through an investigation of the intimate relationship between haunting and grief, Conjuring the Haint: The Haunting Poetics of Black Women posits that for Black women, haunting is both a condition and a strategy in lived experiences and literary productions.Looking at the poetry of Phillis Wheatley, Lucille Clifton, Ntozake Shange, Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon, and Claudia Rankine, Conjuring the Haint explores primary stereotypes of Black women. They are aligned with unruly incarnations of the haint, probing the eerie similarities between this specter and one-dimensional imaginings of Black womanhood, examining how this haintliness manifests in Black women’s elegies, the poetry of grief. Disrupting a tradition of consolation and poetic succession, Black women’s elegies rework the genre by wrestling with multiple forms of death: physical, social, and spiritual. These elegies aim both to lay to rest and to resurrect. Black women poets are then repositioned as conjurers who, through the spirit work of poetry, reckon with haints as complex figures of despair and repair. Each chapter explores the paradox of haints, as evidence of injury and loss and as a pathway to knowledge articulated by various incarnations—the hag, the banshee, and the vengeful revenant. Chapters place these against pervasive images of Mammy, Jezebel, and Sapphire. Through a pairing and dismantling of these ill-fitting myths, Conjuring the Haint refigures haints as a means of recognition and self-possession, a manifestation of the ancestral and divine.

Consensual Hex
by Amanda HarloweThe Craft for the #MeToo era, this debut unfolds a riveting psychological drama shot through with sharp humor and dark magic for readers of Ninth House and The Power. When Lee, a first year at Smith, is raped under eerie circumstances during orientation week by an Amherst frat boy, she's quickly disillusioned by her lack of recourse. As her trauma boils within her, Lee is selected for an exclusive seminar on Gender, Power, and Witchcraft, where she meets Luna (an alluring Brooklyn hipster), Gabi (who has a laundry list of phobias), and Charlotte (a waifish, chill international student). Granted a charter for a coven and suddenly in possession of real magic, the four girls are tasked by their aloof Professor with covertly retrieving a grimoire that an Amherst fraternity has gotten their hands on. But when the witches realize the frat brothers are using magic to commit and cover up sexual assault all over Northampton, their exploits escalate into vigilante justice. As Lee's thirst for revenge on her rapist grows, things spiral out of control, pitting witch against witch as they must wrestle with how far one is willing to go to heal.Consensual Hex is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive portrait of a young woman coming of age, uncovering the ways in which love and obsession and looking to fit in can go hand in hand. Lee, an outstanding, magical anti-heroine, refuses to be pigeonholed as a model victim or a horrific example. Instead, her caustic voice demands our attention, clawing out from every page, equally vicious and vulnerable as she lures us, then dares us, to transgress. Dark, biting, and archly camp, Consensual Hex announces Harlowe as a significant talent.

The Black Rot has arrived—a voracious spiritual infestation whereby empty haunted houses suck in unsuspecting ghosts and imprison them. Lapsewood’s investigation weaves through the plotlines of several other memorable characters—both living and dead—including an undertaker’s son who can see ghosts, a serial throat-slasher reminiscent of Jack the Ripper, an evangelical exorcist, and many more.

So when car trouble strands them in sleepy Cavus, Montana, they decide to stay for a while, charmed by the friendly residents and the surrounding ambiance. Here, they hope, is the healing balm that their marriage needs. Then John and Erma find themselves in a fight not just to save their marriage, but their very lives. For this is no ordinary town. Its quiet streets conceal a dark and bloody secret that has slumbered for centuries. Now, that secret is awake . . . and it's hungry. Like a slow infection, evil is spreading through Cavus. Soon John and Erma--along with the local sheriff, an undocumented immigrant, a traumatized teenage girl, and an old man with terrible secrets of his own--must join together to battle an all-consuming force that has set its sights on its prey: the entire human race.Advance praise for Consumption "Both the evil that suffuses the pages of Consumption and the motley gang of innocents who defend against it are much more interesting than those usually found in your average scare fare. Solid writing elevates this imaginative fright-fest from an invigorating new voice."--Sophie Littlefield, bestselling author of the Aftertime series
