0 to 9 and the New York Avant-Garde: Publishing by Numbers (New Directions in Book History)

by Ross Hair

Edited and self-published by Bernadette Mayer and Vito Acconci from 1967 to 1969, 0 to 9 not only documented some of the most compelling examples of intermedia performance, contemporary poetry, and post-formalist art of the period, but also pioneered new ways of conceiving (and using) the magazine as medium and instrument. 0 to 9 and the New York Avant-Garde: Publishing by Numbers examines how the magazine both responded to and helped shape key developments in New York&’s often fractious avant-garde communities. The book pays particular attention to the ways in which Mayer and Acconci foregrounded the material and generic qualities of the magazine and conceived their periodical as a means of generating (as well as documenting) art and poetry. 0 to 9 and the New York Avant-Garde considers the ways in which 0 to 9 interacted with other artistic movements and theoretical concerns of the period—including cybernetics, Pop Art, structuralism, and information theory. Arguing for the enduring importance of the magazine, and its unique position in the history of New York&’s experimental art and literary scenes, this study contends that 0 to 9 was both a swan song of 1960s idealism and a precursor for the directions that avant-garde art would take in the decades that followed the magazine&’s demise.

So begins the friendship between Prietita and Joaquin, the young boy who, with his mother, has crossed the Rio Grande River to Texas in search of a new life. Prietita, a brave young Mexican American girl, defends Joaquin from the neighborhood kids who taunt him with shouts of "mojado" or "wetback." But what can she do to protect Joaquin and his mother from the Border Patrol as the van cruises slowly up the street toward their hiding place? Writer Gloria Anzaldua is a major Mexican American literary voice. Illustrator Consuelo Mendez is a noted Latin American artist. Both grew up in South Texas. In this, their first collaboration, they have captured not only the hardship of daily life on the border, but also the beauty of the landscape and the dignity and generosity of spirit that the Mexican Americans and the Mexican immigrants share.

03: A Novel

by Jean-Christophe Valtat

"From the bus stop across the street, it was hard to tell, but suddenly I understood, seeing the passengers in the van that picked her up every morning, that she was slightly retarded."A precocious teenager in a French suburb finds himself powerfully, troublingly drawn to the girl he sees every day on the way to school. As he watches and thinks about her, his daydreams—full of lyrics from Joy Division and the Smiths, fairy tales, Flowersfor Algernon, sexual desire and fear, loneliness, rage for escape, impatience to grow up—reveal an entire adolescence. And this fleeting erotic obsession, remembered years later, blossoms into a meditation on what it means to be a smart kid, what it means to be dumb, and what it means to be in love with another person. 03 is a book about young love like none you have ever read. It marks the English-language debut of a unique French writer—one of the great stylists of his generation.
