Burke to Byron, Barbauld to Baillie, 1790–1830
by Jane StablerThis volume provides an introduction to Romantic period texts for students and teachers. Each chapter places key works of drama, poetry and prose in their cultural context and demonstrates how historically-informed close-reading can enrich our view of British literature. Framing chapters on the years 1790 and 1830 explore the transitions that shaped Romantic literature from 18th-century Enlightenment culture to the revolutionary expectations of the nineteenth century and the dawn of the Victorian era. The book examines not only the Big Six (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats), but also a fuller range of writers from the period, including women writers such as Anne Barbauld and Sarah Baillie.

Burkina Libre
English Description Tirso de Molina was, with Lope de Vega and Calderon, one of the great dramatists of 17th century Spain, which produced a theatre as vital rich and as varied as its Elizabethan counterpart. The Trickster of Seville is thoroughly representative of the drama of Spain's Golden Age: a drama of fast-moving action which set its face against classical precepts, broke the unities of time and place, cheerfully mixed the serious and the comic, combined main and sub-plots, and cultivated Spanish subjects and Spanish characters. In this respect Tirso's Don Juan is of course, the most famous character in the drama of the Golden Age, as well as the first of a long line which extends through Mozart and Moliere to the 20th century.

Burlesques
by William Makepeace ThackerayThe gabion was ours. After two hours' fighting we were in possession of the first embrasure, and made ourselves as comfortable as circumstances would admit. Jack Delamere, Tom Delancy, Jerry Blake, the Doctor, and myself, sat down under a pontoon, and our servants laid out a hasty supper on a tumbrel. Though Cambaceres had escaped me so provokingly after I cut him down, his spoils were mine; a cold fowl and a Bologna sausage were found in the Marshal's holsters; and in the haversack of a French private who lay a corpse on the glacis, we found a loaf of bread, his three days' ration.
Burley Cross Postbox Theft
by Nicola BarkerFrom the Man Booker Prize-nominated author of The Yips comes an epistolary novel of startling originality Reading other people's letters is always a guilty pleasure. But for PC Roger Topping, who is contemplating a cache of twenty-seven undelivered missives retrieved from a back alley in Skipton, it's also work. The quaint English village of Burley Cross has been plunged into turmoil by the theft of the contents of its postbox, and no one is above suspicion.Yet Topping's investigation into the curtain-twitching lives of the eminently respectable Burley Cross residents not only uncovers the dark underbelly of his beat, but reveals an unknown strength of character buried deep within the young flatfoot. The denizens of Burley Cross inhabit a world of epic pettiness, where secrets are the currency. They plunge into complaints about dog shit, amateur dramatics, and an Auction of Promises that goes staggeringly wrong. Nicola Barker's epistolary novel is a work of immense comic range, sparkling, disquieting, and thrilling all at once.

Burma Sahib: A Novel
by Paul Theroux“Paul Theroux has exploited this biographical lacuna with great shrewdness and gusto… his fictional account of Blair’s life there [Burma] is a valid and entirely credible attempt to add flesh to the skeletal facts we have of this time. […]this novel is one of his finest, in a long and redoubtable oeuvre.” —New York Times Book ReviewFrom the acclaimed author of The Mosquito Coast and The Bad Angel Brothers comes a riveting new novel exploring one of English literature’s most beloved and controversial figures—George Orwell—and the early years as an officer in colonial Burma that transformed him from Eric Blair, the British Raj policeman, into Orwell the anticolonial writer. At age nineteen, young Eton graduate Eric Blair set sail for India, dreading the assignment ahead. Along with several other young conscripts, he would be trained for three years as a servant of the British Empire, overseeing the local policemen in Burma. Navigating the social, racial, and class politics of his fellow British at the same time as he learned the local languages and struggled to control his men would prove difficult enough. But doing all of this while grappling with his own self-worth, his sense that he was not cut out for this, is soon overwhelming for the young Blair. Eventually, his clashes with his superiors, and the drama that unfolds in this hot, beautiful land, will change him forever.
Burmese Days
by George OrwellGeorge Orwell's triumphant first novel. Informed by his experiences as a police officer in Burma, the novel paints a vivid portrait of the waning days of British imperial rule, and the racism and corruption that ran rampant. <P> It centres on John Flory, a European businessman in colonial Burma, disenfranchised by the bigotry he sees around him and his persistent feeling of being out of place. When he meets Elizabeth Lackersteen, a beautiful, sensitive young woman, he thinks he has found a kindred spirit, but the picture of her in his mind may not prove to match the real person. Burmese Days
by George OrwellSet in the waning days of the British Empire in Burma (currently Myanmar), Burmese Days is a moving and insightful story of colonial life where socio-economic divisions are strictly upheld and corruption is rife within the local administration. An Indian, Dr. Veraswami has incurred the enmity of U Po Kyin, the local magistrate, and only membership in the white-only Club will protect him. John Flory, a white timber-merchant, is positioned to help Veraswami, but finds his own life changing when he falls in love with the newly-arrived Elizabeth Lackersteen. The first of George Orwell’s novels, Burmese Days is based on Orwell’s observations and experiences as a policeman in Burma in the 1920s, and explores such themes as imperialism and racism. First published in 1934, Burmese Days received a mixed reaction from the press, simultaneously lauded and criticized for its unflinching portrayal of colonial life.
