The Pre-Kernel as a Tractable Solution for Cooperative Games

by Holger Ingmar Meinhardt

This present book provides an alternative approach to study the pre-kernel solution of transferable utility games based on a generalized conjugation theory from convex analysis. Although the pre-kernel solution possesses an appealing axiomatic foundation that lets one consider this solution concept as a standard of fairness, the pre-kernel and its related solutions are regarded as obscure and too technically complex to be treated as a real alternative to the Shapley value. Comprehensible and efficient computability is widely regarded as a desirable feature to qualify a solution concept apart from its axiomatic foundation as a standard of fairness. We review and then improve an approach to compute the pre-kernel of a cooperative game by the indirect function. The indirect function is known as the Fenchel-Moreau conjugation of the characteristic function. Extending the approach with the indirect function, we are able to characterize the pre-kernel of the grand coalition simply by the solution sets of a family of quadratic objective functions.

Prealgebra

by Tom Carson

Addressing individual learning styles, Tom Carson presents targeted learning strategies and a complete study system to guide students to success. Carson’s Study System, presented in the “To the Student” section at the front of the text, adapts to the way each student learns, and targeted learning strategies are presented throughout the book to guide students to success. Tom speaks to students in everyday language and walks them through the concepts, explaining not only how to do the math, but also where the concepts come from and why they work.

Prealgebra

by Terry A. Krieger Gary K. Rockswold

The Rockswold/Krieger algebra series fosters conceptual understanding by using relevant applications and visualization to show students why math matters. It answers the common question "When will I ever use this?" Rockswold teaches students the math in context, rather than including the applications at the end of the presentation. By seamlessly integrating meaningful applications that include real data and supporting visuals (graphs, tables, charts, colors, and diagrams), students are able to see how math impacts their lives as they learn the concepts. The authors believe this approach deepens conceptual understanding and better prepares students for future math courses and life.

Prealgebra: Art of Problem Solving (AoPS)

by Richard Rusczyk David Patrick Ravi Boppana

Prealgebra prepares students for the rigors of algebra, and also teaches students problem-solving techniques to prepare them for prestigious middle school math contests such as MATHCOUNTS, MOEMS, and the AMC 8. Topics covered in the book include the properties of arithmetic, exponents, primes and divisors, fractions, equations and inequalities, decimals, ratios and proportions, unit conversions and rates, percents, square roots, basic geometry (angles, perimeter, area, triangles, and quadrilaterals), statistics, counting and probability, and more! The text is structured to inspire the reader to explore and develop new ideas. Each section starts with problems, giving the student a chance to solve them without help before proceeding. The text then includes solutions to these problems, through which algebraic techniques are taught. Important facts and powerful problem solving approaches are highlighted throughout the text. In addition to the instructional material, the book contains well over 1000 problems. The solutions manual (sold separately) contains full solutions to all of the problems, not just answers. This book can serve as a complete Prealgebra course. This text is supplemented by free videos and a free learning system at the publisher's website.
