Education Scholarship in Healthcare: The Health Scholar’s Toolbox

by April S. Fitzgerald Gundula Bosch

Academic medical centers continue to require evidence of scholarly activity for their faculty to maintain their appointment and to advance in promotion/rank. For some, training to know how to obtain evidence of scholarship was obtained through fellowship where information was passed from mentor to mentee in an apprenticeship fashion without a formalized text to follow to obtain the information. In fellowship, information might flow through word-of-mouth or articles handed down out to a mentee. Others in fellowship develop skills by taking classes as part of an additional master’s degree program such as a Master of Public Health. For health professionals who enter an academic institution without having gone through a fellowship program, they are still expected to perform scholarly activity but don’t have the benefit of having done the apprenticeship to learn the skills, so unless they decide to find a course, obtain a master’s degree, or find a fellowship, they have no way to gain the necessary skills and are at risk of losing their appointment and have no hope of progressing in promotion. This text provides a comprehensive toolbox for the academic who needs these skills to survive. It serves as a valuable resource for health professionals – physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and allied professionals – as well as scientists, and students, with the steps necessary to take their educational endeavors from idea to implementation through dissemination. Beginning with the concept of “What is Scholarship”, the authors walk the reader through the concepts of how to find your niche, look through the literature to check for a gap, design a question, consider evaluation and outcomes, be aware of ethical considerations, plan a project, look for support, find mentorship, prepare an abstract, present a poster, disseminate a project, and lead a team. All chapters are written by experts in the subject matter.

Education Skills for 21st Century Teachers

by Ian G. Kennedy Gloria Latham Hélia Jacinto

This monograph presents the current views, challenges and future needs of educators from a global online exchange where educators and researchers discuss the 21st century skills needed by students and teachers. The three editors, who participated in the global online research discussion group, also assumed the role of authors to summarise, analyse and celebrate the myriad of ideas generated in a topic thread that had well over a thousand responses from 26 countries. Through Comparative Analysis they then compared the posters' ideas to some current big thinkers in education. This text promotes teachers' voices from diverse disciplines and sectors who are united in their desire for purposeful and radical change in how teaching is carried out and what is taught. The text advocates shifting power away from government control and standardisation towards empowering teachers to guide and further develop the unique talents of diverse individuals.

Education and Neuroscience: Evidence, Theory and Practical Application

by Paul Howard-Jones

This book brings together contributions from scientists and educators at the forefront of interdisciplinary research efforts involving neuroscience and education. It includes consideration of what we know about brain function that may be relevant to educational areas including reading, mathematics, music and creativity. The increasing interest of educators in neuroscience also brings dangers with it, as evidenced by the proliferation of neuromyths within schools and colleges. For this reason, it also reviews some of the more prominent misconceptions, as well as exploring how educational understanding can be constructed in the future that includes concepts from neuroscience more judiciously. This book will be of interest to educators, policymakers and scientists seeking fresh perspectives on how we learn. This book was published as a special issue in Educational Research, a journal of the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER).

Education and Support Programs for Caregivers

by Deborah J. Monahan David H. Haigler Ronald W. Toseland

For many, caring for a chronically ill family member is "the right thing to do", but it is also often a source of emotional hardship, physical stress, and social isolation. In response, skill-building, coping, and psychoeducational programs have emerged to help caregivers meet the changes and challenges in their - as well as the patients' - lives. Education and Support Programs for Caregivers reveals the diversity of the caregiver population as well as their experiences and needs, and it introduces an empirically solid framework for planning, implementing, and evaluating caregiver programs. The book synthesizes current trends, exploring the effectiveness of different types of programs (e.g., clinic, community, home based) and groups (e.g., peer, professional, self-help), and how supportive programs lead to improved care. Coverage includes: Improving service delivery of education and support programs to underserved caregivers.Cultural, ethnic, and gender issues in conducting caregiver education and support groups.Utilization patterns (e.g., a key to understanding service needs).E-health, telehealth, and other technological developments in caregiver services.Evaluating the effectiveness and sustainability of programs.Recommendations for future practice, training, policy, and advocacy.Education and Support Programs for Caregivers offers a wealth of insights and ideas for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students across the caregiving fields, including psychology, social work, public health, geriatrics and gerontology, and medicine as well as public and education policy makers.

Education, Disordered Eating and Obesity Discourse: Fat Fabrications

by Brian Davies John Evans Emma Rich Rachel Allwood

Eating less, exercising more and losing weight seem the obvious solution for the oncoming 'obesity epidemic'. Rarely, however, is thought given to how these messages are interpreted and whether they are in fact inherently healthy. Education, Disordered Eating and Obesity Discourse investigates how 'body centred talk' about weight, fat, food and exercise is recycled in schools, enters educational processes, and impacts on the identities and health of young people. Drawing on the experiences of young women who have developed eating disorders and research on international school curricula and the media, the authors challenge the veracity, substance and merits of contemporary 'obesity discourse'. By concentrating on previously unexplored aspects of the debate around weight and health, it is revealed how well-meaning advice can propel some children toward behaviour that seriously damages their health. This book is not only about 'eating disorders' and the people affected, but the effects of obesity discourse on everyone’s health as it enters public policy, educational practice and the cultural fabric of our lives. It will interest students, teachers, doctors, health professionals and researchers concerned with obesity and weight issues.

Educational Dimensions of School Lunch: Critical Perspectives

by A. G. Rud Suzanne Rice

School lunch is often regarded as a necessary but inconvenient distraction from the real work of education. Lunch, in this view, is about providing students the nourishment they need in order to attend to academic content and the tests that assess whether content has been learned. In contrast, the central purpose of this collection is to examine school lunch as an educational phenomenon in its own right. Contributing authors—drawing from a variety of disciplinary traditions, including philosophy, sociology, and anthropology—examine school lunch policies and practices, social and cultural aspects of food and eating, and the relation among school food, the environment, and human and non-human animal well-being. The volume also addresses how school lunch might be more widely conceptualized and practiced as an educational undertaking.

Ways to think about outcomes beyond academics and in alternative settings are addressed as well. Chapters also address different perspectives on what outcomes should be for even young children with disabilities. The contributing authors of this book represent a range of professionals--researchers, policymakers, advocates--whose work helps support student attainment of positive educational outcomes. Individual subjects addressed include: assessment data collection standards opportunity to learn outcome based education (OBE) school reform alternative programs indicators accountabilityEducational Outcomes for Students With Disabilities is a current synthesis of what specialists know about educational outcomes for students with disabilities. Educational Standards for Nurses: With Other Addresses on Nursing Subjects (Routledge Revivals)

by Isabel Hampton Robb

The first superintendent of nurses at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing she helped to found key organizations for nurses in the USA. Her work in nursing has led to her being thought of as a founder of modern American nursing theory, and many of the standards she implemented are still in place today. Hampton also played a large role in advancing the social status of nursing, previously thought of a profession for the lower classes. Her work in developing a curriculum of more advanced training during her time at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing raised the status of the profession. Nursing education today would not be what it is without the contribution of Isabel Hampton Robb.

Een bedrieglijke bijbal

by G.A. van Essen

Bijzondere gevallen.

by S. Tixa

by Martin Stevens Gesine Seeber Inge van den Akker-Scheek Sophie Thölken
