Reviews of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology 154
by S. OffermannsThis volume presents a neural network architecture for the prediction of conditional probability densities - which is vital when carrying out universal approximation on variables which are either strongly skewed or multimodal. Two alternative approaches are discussed: the GM network, in which all parameters are adapted in the training scheme, and the GM-RVFL model which draws on the random functional link net approach. Points of particular interest are: - it examines the modification to standard approaches needed for conditional probability prediction; - it provides the first real-world test results for recent theoretical findings about the relationship between generalisation performance of committees and the over-flexibility of their members; This volume will be of interest to all researchers, practitioners and postgraduate / advanced undergraduate students working on applications of neural networks - especially those related to finance and pattern recognition.

Reviews on Biomarker Studies in Aging and Anti-Aging Research (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1178)
by Paul C. GuestUsing both epidemiological and model organism approaches, we have gained new insights into the physiological and molecular aspects of aging, which has led to significant advancements in potential anti-aging strategies. Reviews on Biomarker Studies in Aging and Anti-Aging Research presents a series of reviews in various aspects of aging and age-related disease research along with several methods which have shown progress as potential anti-aging approaches. The book is aimed at researchers in the areas of aging and chronic disease, as well as to clinical scientists, physicians and major drug companies. It provides important information on disease mechanisms, and each chapter is presented in the context of the aging process, specific chronic diseases or different therapeutic areas.
Reviews on Biomarker Studies in Psychiatric and Neurodegenerative Disorders (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1118)
by Paul C. GuestThis book includes a series of reviews on general aspects of biomarker use in the study of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases and the development of medications involved in their treatment. It describes the pros and cons of the various approaches and covers the successes and failures in this research field. It is only by a thorough understanding of the shortcomings that progress can be made. The overall goal is to facilitate the understanding and treatment of these disorders, by providing a viable mechanism of catching up with other areas of modern medicine, such as diabetes and heart disease. Finally, it is anticipated that the development and application of valid biomarker tests and the leveraging of novel drug targets will help the fields of psychiatry on neurodegenerative disorders move into the area of personalized medicine where the right patients can receive the right medication at the right time for the best possible outcome.
Reviews on Biomarker Studies of Metabolic and Metabolism-Related Disorders (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1134)
by Paul C. GuestThe book recognizes that throughout the scientific, medical, and economic communities, new tests incorporating biomarkers are needed to improve the diagnosis of patients suffering from metabolic disorders. The early identification of those at risk of developing obesity will help to place these individuals on the best treatment course as early as possible for improved treatment outcomes. This will also help to cut costs incurred by the healthcare services. For all of this to occur, new research efforts are needed to identify novel biomarkers that can be used to predict the disease in the presymptomatic stage, for disease monitoring and for prediction of treatment response. It is also possible that new drug targets can be identified using these approaches which, in turn, can lead to the development of new treatment approaches. This volume also includes a series of reviews on biomarker discovery and usage in the study of diseases marked by perturbations in metabolism. It will describe the pros and cons of the various approaches and cover the successes and failures in this important research field.
