The Art of Medicine in Early China

by Miranda Brown

In this book, Miranda Brown investigates the myths that acupuncturists and herbalists have told about the birth of the healing arts. Moving from the Han (206 BC–AD 220) and Song (960–1279) dynasties to the twentieth century, Brown traces the rich history of Chinese medical historiography and the gradual emergence of the archive of medical tradition. She exposes the historical circumstances that shaped the current image of medical progenitors: the ancient bibliographers, medieval editors, and modern reformers and defenders of Chinese medicine who contributed to the contemporary shape of the archive. Brown demonstrates how ancient and medieval ways of knowing live on in popular narratives of medical history, both in modern Asia and in the West. She also reveals the surprising and often unacknowledged debt that contemporary scholars owe to their pre-modern forebears for the categories, frameworks, and analytic tools with which to study the distant past.

The Art of Seeing: A Natural Path to Better Vision

by Aldous Huxley

A Natural Path to Better Vision Unlike the dystopian vision described in Brave New World, or the psychedelic vision described in his The Doors of Perception, in The Art of Seeing, Aldous Huxley focuses on the actual vision of the human eye. Documenting his own profound near blindness and subsequent attempts to improve his own sight, Huxley offers a thorough instruction manual on the controversial alternative vision therapy exercises developed by W. H. Bates. Although Huxley remained visually challenged throughout his life, he explains how and why he was able to get significant benefits from the "Bates Method" and was determined to share his discovery with the world. "Since optical glass was no longer doing me any good, I decided to take the plunge. Within a couple of months, I was reading without glasses . . . without strain and fatigue," he wrote of the beginning of his process. Huxley discusses the physiology of the eye and how it can heal; the effects of disease and emotion; eye movement exercises; blinking and breathing; relaxation and many more approaches to improved optical and mental function. He describes the process of improving your vision as an art rather than a science. Those familiar with Huxley's work won't be surprised to learn that The Art of Seeing is more than just a dry manual-it is a thorough discussion of the physiology and psychology of human sight. Huxley fans and those interested in the art of seeing will find this a must read.

The Art of Skin Graft: Advanced Graft Technique

by Young-Chul Jang

This book describes common errors, including donor site selection, techniques to decrease scar contracture rate, and show improved long-term follow-up results. In addition, it will describe application of STSG on facial reconstructive surgery and aesthetic thin STSG for correction of irregular surface, color mismatch and old conspicuous engrafted margin. Full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) has been used for burn scar contracture of joint areas, including hand, foot, upper and lower extremities. It maximizes the range of motion of those areas and possesses a soft and elastic texture. However, compared to a conventional skin graft, more efforts are needed for graft take with a higher graft failure rate and limited donor site size, which makes surgeons hesitate to use FTSG. This book introduces techniques to decrease operation time, maturation period, pigmentation rate, and improve high graft take rate, skin texture and also newly introducing full thickness skin with subcutaneous fat composite graft technique and its concept. Recently, the development of various artificial dermis and cell culture techniques has greatly improved burn patients' survival rate. In this book the author’s experience with various types of artificial dermis, cultured epithelial cell therapy and its benefits for tendon and bone exposure limb salvage and variable cases of long-term follow-up results are shared with up-to-date techniques. The final chapter introduces unique aesthetic skin graft concepts to improve previous scar contracture lesion, dark pigmentation disorder, irregular surface and discoloration, conspicuous grafted margin and others.

The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms

by Robert B. Grossman

Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. The Artificial Knee: An Ongoing Evolution

by Peter S. Walker

Spanning both the history and future of knee replacement, this unique book recounts how artificial knees have reached the stage they are today, and whether their performance can be further improved. The author, who has been designing artificial knees for 50 years, starts the story in the late 1960’s with the early pioneers; during the 1970’s, the principles for successful artificial knees were established. While many different types were designed, a small number have become by far the most widely utilized. Yet other types of designs, so far little used, along with new materials and the application of computer-assisted surgery, could result in significant advancements in the treatment of knee arthritis. Each chapter provides a detailed description of the origins of the ideas and principles and their rationale, followed by the latest information and evidence. The book begins with an overview of the history and background of the artificial knee, in terms of design and implementation and the thought leaders involved. Fixation, biomechanics, and the types of designs are discussed in detail, both what has worked and what has not, and why. Instrumentation, testing and tribology, and functional evaluation methods are also covered. The book concludes with a look toward the future possibilities for the field of artificial knees. An illustrated glossary of terms, is included for quick reference. The Artificial Knee: An Ongoing Evolution will appeal to orthopedic surgeons and researchers, medical academics and orthopedic companies, and to those with a general interest in artificial knees.

The Arts of Indigenous Health and Well-Being

by Edited by Nancy Van Styvendale;J.D. McDougall;Robert Henry;and Robert Alexander Innes

Drawing attention to the ways in which creative practices are essential to the health, well-being, and healing of Indigenous peoples, The Arts of Indigenous Health and Well-Being addresses the effects of artistic endeavour on the “good life”, or mino-pimatisiwin in Cree, which can be described as the balanced interconnection of physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. In this interdisciplinary collection, Indigenous knowledges inform an approach to health as a wider set of relations that are central to well-being, wherein artistic expression furthers cultural continuity and resilience, community connection, and kinship to push back against forces of fracture and disruption imposed by colonialism. The need for healing—not only individuals but health systems and practices—is clear, especially as the trauma of colonialism is continually revealed and perpetuated within health systems. The field of Indigenous health has recently begun to recognize the fundamental connection between creative expression and well-being. This book brings together scholarship by humanities scholars, social scientists, artists, and those holding experiential knowledge from across Turtle Island to add urgently needed perspectives to this conversation. Contributors embrace a diverse range of research methods, including community-engaged scholarship with Indigenous youth, artists, Elders, and language keepers. The Arts of Indigenous Health and Well-Being demonstrates the healing possibilities of Indigenous works of art, literature, film, and music from a diversity of Indigenous peoples and arts traditions. This book will resonate with health practitioners, community members, and any who recognize the power of art as a window, an entryway to access a healthy and good life.

The Assessment and Treatment of Children Who Abuse Animals: The AniCare Child Approach

by Mary Lou Randour Kenneth Shapiro Susan Krinsk Joann L. Wolf

Empirical research has clearly demonstrated that animal abuse in childhood is associated with family violence and violent behavior towards humans in general. Such abuse is accordingly of increasing interest within human services and the criminal justice system. This handbook will serve as an ideal resource for therapists in social work, psychology, psychiatry, and allied fields who work with children who have abused animals. It provides step-by-step guidance on how to assess, develop appropriate treatment plans for, and treat children who commit animal abuse, based on the AniCare model developed by the Animals and Society Institute. Exercises cover the identification and expression of feelings, the development of empathy, self-management skills, and working with parents. Careful consideration is also paid to the effects of witnessing animal abuse. The theoretical framework is eclectic, encompassing cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and attachment theories. A number of illustrative case studies are included, along with excerpts from treatment sessions. Accompanying electronic supplementary material demonstrates role-played assessment and treatment and includes workshop presentations of pedagogic material.

The Assisted Reproduction of Race

by Camisha A. Russell

A philosopher examines the social implications of assisted reproductive technologies at the intersection of race, medicine, and bioethics. The use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART)—in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, and gestational surrogacy—challenges contemporary notions of what it means to be parents or families. Camisha A. Russell argues that these technologies also bring new insight to ideas and questions surrounding race. She does this in part by reframing ART, as medical technologies that also act as technologies of kinship.Thinking about race in terms of technology brings together the common academic insight that race is a social construction with the equally important insight that race is a political tool used in different contexts for a variety of ends. As Russell explores ideas about race through their role in ART, she brings together social and political views to shift debates from what race is to what race does, how it is used, and what effects it has had in the world.

The Asthma and Allergy Action Plan for Kids

by Kate Kelly Allen Dozor

Statistics show that up to 40 percent of children in the United States suffer from allergies and at least 10 percent suffer from asthma. That translates into almost five million American children affected by both allergies and asthma. And as Dr. Allen J. Dozor, head of one of the largest pediatric pulmonary practices in the United States, has seen among his patients, some of the most upsetting effects of allergies and asthma are the psychological wounds inflicted on a child's self-image. There is the constant protectiveness from caregivers, confusing limits and rules, headaches, obesity, shortness of breath, and sleep deprivation. In some cases these side effects, such as stress and obesity, cycle back to make the original condition worse. Dr. Dozor's plan, developed over the last twenty years, is designed to empower both parents and children. His warmhearted but reality-based approach includes How to give the right amount of medication for best effects and no side effects Empowering your children to manage their own condition so that they can feel safe and secure Prevention and management in school Handling emergencies And much more!
