Half Light

by Frances Hegarty

The finest medical gauze, sharp instruments for delicate probing, linseed oil... these were a few of the tools of Elisabeth Young's trade. A restorer of paintings, she delighted in her tasks: to clean, patch, fill in, and revarnish until the work gave up its secrets and glowed in its original glory. Alone in her London flat, Elisabeth savored the tranquility demanded by both her craft and her soul... a gently guarded peace shared solely with her latest lover, Francis Thurloe. Amiable, patrician, unconscious of his assumption that adoration was his birthright, the handsome barrister felt thwarted by Elisabeth's baffling mix of sensual generosity and emotional reserve. She did not confront, demand, or whine... nor did she confide her mounting anxiety over the suspicion that she was being followed wherever she went. And when she accepted an offer to restore a wealthy collector's paintings, stored in his cavernous mansion flat, no one knew that Elisabeth Young was about to disappear... When the police find her car abandoned, and her flat tidy, with trash put out, their interest lapses: woman picked up and left, as single women do... .no family, no close friends, not to worry, she'll turn up. But Francis, worried, begins a search that leads him to Annie Macalpine, an antiques dealer whose spiked-hair, lowbrow stance hides the bravest and hungriest of hearts... Enid Daley, Elisabeth's self-appointed concierge, whose jealousy of her winsome, serene neighbor curdles with venom... Thomas Milton, a patron of the arts whose private demons have forged a brutal sense of entitlement... Maria Milton, his sister, grotesque in form and speech, but solaced by severe religious rituals... Butler, Thomas's companion, ferociously loyal and trained to attack without mercy. As a madman's vise tightens around the trapped Elisabeth, Francis and Annie hunt frantically for his elegant prison, where beautiful works of art are coaxed to life... only to be savagely destroyed... .

Half Light: A Novel

by Frances Fyfield

Elisabeth is a picture restorer. This gives her the solitude and independence she needs - living and working alone in her flat. Despite her skills and reliability, Elizabeth undercharges for her work - valuing the worth of the paintings rather more than herself. Her ambitions are modest: beauty to look upon, unintrusive friendships and complete privacy. But when a mysterious and obviously wealthy man commissions her to restore his fabulous collection, an uncharacteristic combination of curiosity and financial need prompts her to accept his offer. Elisabeth soon realises her error, as the past and the present combine to make privacy her nemesis. As she becomes hostage to her patron, her lover and her friend realise they know nothing about her, or where she might be.

Half-Past Dawn

by Richard Doetsch

Between life and death, between the deepest dark of night and the first rays of dawn, in that moment where we begin to drift from sleep to wakefulness, is where anything is possible . . . Jack Keeler wakes up one bright June morning to the shock of his life. He gazes in the mirror and sees a half-healed gash over his right eye and a hastily stitched-together wound in his shoulder that looks suspiciously like the result of a bullet. He also notices an intricately designed tattoo--words written in a foreign script--covering the length of his forearm. He's alone, his house eerily silent without the delightful chatter of his wife and two daughters. He has absolutely no memory of how, when, or why he ended up in such gruesome physical condition. Jack gropes his way down to the kitchen to call his wife, Mia--an FBI agent--and to find some answers. But before he can pick up the phone, his eyes are drawn to the front page of that morning's paper. He takes in a large photo of a bridge, the guard rail missing, a skein of tire marks on the roadway. Above the photo, in large black type, a headline that simply reads NEW YORK CITY DISTRICT ATTORNEY JACK KEELER DEAD. From this mind-shattering opening scene, Richard Doetsch takes readers on a twisting, turning adventure as Jack struggles to find out not only what happened to him, but to his missing wife. As fragments of his memory return, and with the help of a loyal friend, he reconstructs the events of the previous night, which culminated in his being shot and Mia's abduction. He has only until dawn of the following day to uncover an ancient mystery hidden in the depths of one of the country's most heavily guarded prisons. Just when Jack thinks he has put all the pieces together and has saved Mia's life, a final twist occurs that changes everything. A thriller spanning time, an Asian people out of legend, an assassin who will stop at nothing to avenge his death sentence, and a diary whose contents foretell the future, Half-Past Dawn is a race through the borders of life and death, insanity and reason, and dreams and reality. In the dim light of half-past dawn, nothing is as it appears to be.
