Not By Chance (A Seaport Suspense Novel #4)
by Kathy HermanIn Search of Significance Thirty-year-old Brandon Jones arrives at his parents' doorstep burned out, jobless, and now fiancée-less. Ellen and Guy can provide a place for him to stay only until he figures out what to do with his life. When he takes a temporary job at a summer camp for disadvantaged kids, Brandon begins a turbulent relationship with a biracial adolescent named Caedmon. Somewhere in the midst of the chaos--caused by Caedmon's disappearance just before a hurricane is predicted to hit Seaport, and by a group of racists who will not stop at arson or murder--Brandon begins to see that the pieces of his life are not by chance. If he has discovered his life's purpose, can he live it? "Life is pointless. And if there's a God, He's asleep on the job." Brandon Jones didn't know what he expected from the homeless man he met on the way out of town. Certainly not the angry words that haunted him. But then, nothing happened the way he expected. Not his promising career, not his engagement to the "perfect" woman. All his certainty that God had plans for him, that he was meant to do something important--something significant--had amounted to a big fat zero. And now, here he was, thirty years old, no job, no fiancée. Living with his parents. Maybe the homeless guy was right. Then again...maybe not. Maybe Brandon has returned to Seaport for a reason. To face down a brewing disaster, steeped in hate crimes and danger. To survive against all odds. To learn, once and for all, that "many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." {INSERT ENDORSEMENTS TO COME} Story Behind the Book"I am continually blessed by how many readers express their appreciation for the God-given talent that enables me to write novels, but I'm more amazed that so many of them feel as though they haven't been gifted with anything. My goal in writing Not By Chance was to show that God's purpose for every life is in place before we are born. Based on Proverbs 19:21 , 'Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the L ord's purpose that prevails,' I sought to create unforgettable characters who challenge each reader's understanding of their purpose in life. Ultimately, I want to point them to the Creator with the Master plan." --Kathy HermanFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

Not Dark Yet: A DCI Banks Novel (Inspector Banks Novels #27)
by Peter Robinson“Robinson is an author with amazing empathy, a snare-trap ear for dialogue, and a clear eye for the telling detail.”—Michael ConnellyOne of the world's greatest suspense writers returns with the 27th novel featuring the legendary detective Alan Banks in the mystery series Stephen King calls “the best now on the market.” When property developer Connor Clive Blaydon is found dead, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks and his Yorkshire team dive into the investigation. As luck would have it, someone had installed a cache of spy-cams all around his luxurious home. The team hope that they’ll find answers—and the culprit—among the video recordings. Instead of discovering Connor’s murderer, however, the grainy and blurred footage reveals another crime: a brutal rape. If they can discover the woman’s identity, it could lead to more than justice for the victim; it could change everything the police think they know about Connor and why anyone would want him dead.Meanwhile, tensions are rising between Banks and his friend, Zelda. A super recognizer—able to recognize faces significantly better than most people—Zelda is determined to bring the men who abused her to justice. But stirring up the murky waters of the past will put her in far greater danger than ever before, and Banks worries that he won’t be able to stop her from plunging too deep before it’s too late.

After giving up on the private investigation business, he's looking toward the future--one that involves getting married to Kate Ellison. Kate's got him focused on living the good life: planning the wedding, finishing college, and anticipating a romantic Hawaiian honeymoon. Until an anonymous email with a link and an old picture of him on the police force shows up in his mailbox. And once Donne clicks the link, nothing else in his life matters.Bill Martin has it easy. The plan is to keep his head down until his pension kicks in and he can live the even-easier life. That all stops the day Jackson Donne shows up at his office. When Jackson Donne clicked on the link, he saw a live-stream of the one thing he never expected to see. Six years ago, his fiancée, Jeanne Baker died in a car accident with a drunk driver. Or so Donne thought. Because when his web browser opens, he's taken to a video of Jeanne bound to a chair, bruised and screaming, but very much alive. He starts to investigate, but quickly finds out he's lost most of his contacts over the years. The live-stream has stopped working. The police hold a grudge that stems back to the days when he turned in his corrupt police colleagues, and neither they nor the FBI are willing to believe a dead girl's been kidnapped. As his investigation goes down one blind alley after another, Donne's obsession with finding Jeanne grows. He begins pushing everyone away. Kate, seeing all he's worked slipping away, begs Donne to tell her what's going on. And when he refuses, she's left angry and with no choice but to leave him. Vulnerable and alone, but unable to stop looking, Donne turns to Bill Martin--the only man to love Jeanne as much as he did-for help. And that decision could cost Donne everything.

Not I, Said the Sparrow
by Pat ReynoldsNot I, Said the Sparrow is a deviously plotted mystery set in a fictional Perth university. In full view of the assembled masses at the annual Graduation Ceremony, an elderly Mathematics professor is shot dead by means of a poisoned dart. A young History lecturer, Lucy, joins her friend, Felicity, another lecturer, to act as a sounding board for the inexperienced detective, Felicity's cousin, who has been brought in to investigate. Lucy and Felicity were told not to become too involved, but they soon find themselves right in the midst of the action as they uncover a plethora of illegal activities and other skulduggery occurring on campus. Despite this undercurrent of wickedness and corruption, and despite the unpopular Vice Chancellor's attempts to address a financial crisis closing in on the University, lectures continue and students carry on as students usually carry on. This is a crime novel, but there is no gratuitous violence, and the emphasis is more on the characters and the mystery than the actual murder. It gives insights into work at a university and treats its material lightly, with a touch of humour. This book would appeal to a wide audience, especially those who like the challenge of a good mystery.
