Recovering Police Legitimacy: A Radical Framework

by Rafe McGregor

Transatlantic policing is experiencing an unprecedented crisis of legitimacy, epitomised by public responses to the murders of George Floyd and Sarah Everard during the COVID-19 pandemic. Legitimacy is lost when the police either fail to protect the public or rely on coercion rather than consent to achieve that protection. Recovering Police Legitimacy challenges conventional criminological, political, and public solutions to the problem by approaching it from the bottom up, beginning with policing as a practice constituted by a unique set of excellences, skills, and characteristics. The author draws on his experience as a police officer and on the serial fictions of James Ellroy, David Peace, and Nic Pizzolatto to characterise the practice in terms of heroic struggle, edgework, absolute sacrifice, and worldmaking. These characteristics provide an analytic tool for revolutionising our understanding of the relations among policing as a situated practice, public protection, and police legitimacy and for identifying the different levels at which legitimacy is undermined. His conclusion is that recovery is possible but will be slow in pace and incomplete in scope.Written accessibly for students, police officers, policymakers, scholars, and anyone with an interest in police legitimacy, this is a groundbreaking study of a pressing social problem.

O no...»Victor Rodríguez, Expansión «Un gran libro. [...] Una joya literaria.»Daniel Martín Ferrand, República

Red 1-2-3

by John Katzenbach

A psycho turns fairy-tale endings into nightmares in this “vivid cat-and-mice game” from the New York Times–bestselling author (William Bayer, Edgar Award–winning author). Karen is a lonely middle-aged doctor with a house in the woods. Sarah is a grief-stricken suburban widow who has turned to booze and barbiturates. Jordan is a directionless high school student and a child of divorce. They are three women with nothing in common but their red hair—until a stranger who calls himself the Big Bad Wolf sends each one the same chilling letter. Just like vulnerable Little Red Riding Hood, they are going to be stalked and killed—but in three distinct ways, in three different locations, all on the same fateful day. The one thing this devious madman didn’t count on was the Reds discovering each other. When authorities refuse to help, Karen, Sarah, and Jordan band together. It’s only then that they discover power in numbers, and how far they’re willing to go to beat the Wolf at his own game. From the New York Times–bestselling author, comes “a twisted riff” on a Grimm tale (Publishers Weekly). “Must reading for thriller fans.”—Booklist, starred review “Few writers of crime fiction seem to understand the criminal mind as well as Katzenbach.” —People
