Smoke Without Fire (Andrew Basnett Ser. #6)
by E.X. FerrarsA retired professor spends Christmas in a not-so-peaceful English village in this wryly witty mystery with &“a surprising and satisfying conclusion&” (Publishers Weekly). Andrew Basnett does not have very good luck with Christmas. Most recently, while visiting friends in Australia for the festive season, he wound up with a front-row seat to some rather extraordinary family strife. And this time around, his plans for a peaceful English-village holiday get blown up when. . . . well, when his hosts&’ neighbor, Sir Lucas Dearden, gets blown up. This is England in the 1980s; everyone shudders, blames the IRA, and moves on. Except, of course, for Andrew Basnett. Who knew, he wonders, about Sir Lucas&’s last-minute change of plans? Why had Sir Lucas meticulously removed one page of the (rather stunningly dull) memoir he was writing? And could the bomb possibly have been intended for someone else? &“Ferrars has published more than sixty books and the craftsmanship of this one shows why her popularity endures.&” —Publishers Weekly &“There are few detective-story writers so consistently good.&” —Sunday Times
Smoke and Ashes (Smoke #3)
by Tanya HuffTanya Huff, bestselling author of the Blood Price books, delivers the thrilling conclusion to a series where a street-kid-turned-production assistant faces ancient demons, bicurious heartthrobs, and a filming schedule that stops for nobody…Coming out of the wizard closet has barely changed Tony Foster’s life. He’s been promoted… to deploy hair-raising sorcery against construction noise. His crush on the gorgeous second lead has devolved to overanalyzing paparazzi pics. His magic studies progress when he’s not working or sleeping, which is never. Then he intervenes to prevent a terrible accident, and discovers the stuntwoman involved is an immortal survivor of a 3500-year-old sex cult with a hellgate around her midriff. She tells Tony a demonic convergence is beginning in Vancouver, and only he can turn back the eldritch horrors attempting entry through the living room set. The producer maintains they still owe the network two episodes of Darkest Night, and Tony, as his on-staff wizard, had better handle it. Meanwhile, the crew—and one infuriating actor—are endangering themselves trying to help while Tony barely has the firepower to keep himself in one piece. Whether it’s Tony’s friends, his city, or his own survival, something’s bound to give.

There is no food, no water, no rule of law. Smoke and Mirrors (Magic Men Mysteries #2)
by Elly GriffithsIn the sequel to the "captivating"* Zig Zag Girl, DI Edgar Stephens and the magician Max Mephisto hunt for a killer after two children are murdered in a tragic tableau of a very grim fairy tale. *Wall Street Journal It's Christmastime in Brighton, and the city is abuzz about a local production of Aladdin, starring the marvelous Max Mephisto. But the holiday cheer is lost on DI Edgar Stephens. He's investigating the murder of two children, Annie and Mark, who were strangled to death in the woods, abandoned alongside a trail of candy--a horrifying scene eerily reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel. Edgar has plenty of leads to investigate. Annie, a surprisingly dark child, used to write gruesome plays based on the Grimms' fairy tales. Does the key to the case lie in her unfinished final script? Or does the macabre staging of Annie and Mark's deaths point to the theater and the capricious cast of characters performing in Aladdin? Once again Edgar enlists Max's help in penetrating the shadowy world of the theater. But is this all just classic misdirection?

Smoke in the Cypress: A Napoleonic Officer in New Orleans
by Owen PatakiA veteran of the Napoleonic Wars must travel from revolution-torn France to Louisiana to rescue a young noblewoman, but he is quickly ensnared in a complex web of political intrigue and violence in this thrilling historical fiction adventure. As the War of 1812 rages across early 19th-century America, Marcel Moreau, wounded in service with Napoleon's Grand Armée, must journey to New Orleans to find Celeste de Beaumais, a young aristocrat who has fled the aftermath of the French Revolution and has settled herself on a sprawling Louisiana plantation. Standing in Moreau's way are various factions in and around the historic French Quarter—soldiers, slave hunters, marooned slaves, and Jean Lafitte's notorious Baratarian pirates—all of whom have their own interests and enemies. As he ventures deeper into the city and the vast cypress swamps beyond, encountering elements of Creole culture and Louisiana voodoo, Moreau will find that circumstances are much more complex—and dangerous—than he could have imagined. Meanwhile, a massive English fleet appears on the horizon, causing panic in the city and desperation from the outgunned and outnumbered Louisiana militia. Hoping to benefit from his years of military experience with Napoleon's Grande Armée, these French-speaking Creole farmers and townsfolk, and their American allies, enlist Moreau to help train them for the coming battle of New Orleans. As he does what he can to help this motley resistance movement—led by General Andrew Jackson and bolstered by Jean Lafitte's Baratarians—Moreau soon comes up against another enemy. With the city's eyes on the battlefield, a ruthless plantation master plots his own designs. But those who've escaped his clutches have no plans to return to a life in chains and have formed their own resistance. Moreau must now decide where his experience and instincts must be put to the best use.
