Trace: A Joe Gunther Novel (Joe Gunther Series #28)
by Archer MayorThe Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) has been pulled onto three cases at the same time; meanwhile, VBI head Joe Gunther has to take time off to care for his ailing mother. The victim is a young woman, the roommate of the daughter of Medical Examiner Beverly Hillstrom. A recent transplant from Albany, New York, Sammie must find out what put a hit man on the trail of this seemingly innocent young woman. Lester Spinney takes over a famous cold case, a double murder where a state trooper and a motorist were killed in an exchange of gunfire. Or so it has seemed for years. When Lester is told that the motorist’s fingerprints were planted on the gun he’s supposed to have fired, it opens the question—who really killed the state trooper? Willy Kunkle’s case starts with a child's discovery of three teeth on a railroad track, leading eventually to a case of possible sabotage against critical military equipment. In cases that lead the team all over Vermont and nearby, Archer Mayor once again shows why his novels featuring Joe Gunther and the VBI team are among the finest crime fiction today.
Trace Elements (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries #29)
by Donna LeonWhen Dottoressa Donato calls the Questura to report that a dying patient at the hospice Fatebenefratelli wants to speak to the police, Commissario Guido Brunetti and his colleague, Claudia Griffoni, waste no time in responding.

"They killed him. It was bad money. I told him no," Benedetta Toso gasps the words about her recently-deceased husband, Vittorio Fadalto. Even though he is not sure she can hear him Brunetti softly promises he and Griffoni will look into what initially appears to be a private family tragedy. They discover that Fadalto worked in the field collecting samples of contamination for a company that measures the cleanliness of Venice's water supply and that he had died in a mysterious motorcycle accident. Distracted briefly by Vice Questore Patta's obsession with youth crime in Venice, Brunetti is bolstered once more by the remarkable research skills of Patta's secretary, Signora Elettra Zorzi. Piecing together the tangled threads, in time Brunetti comes to realize the perilous meaning in the woman's accusation and the threat it reveals to the health of the entire region. But justice in this case proves to be ambiguous, as Brunetti is reminded it can be when, seeking solace, he reads Aeschylus's classic play The Eumenides.

As she has done so often through her memorable characters and storytelling skill, Donna Leon once again engages our sensibilities as to the differences between guilt and responsibility.

Trace Evidence
by Elizabeth BeckaEvelyn James, forensic pathologist for the Cleveland Medical Examiner, is called out to the river¿s edge to take a look at the body of a girl, recently pulled from the water. A Caucasian, the dark marbling of decomposition had spread through her limbs like poison. After years in the job, Evelyn is used to such things ¿ to the sight of victims washed up by poverty or grief ¿ but this is quite different, and much nastier. Her feet had been encased in concrete, her body wrapped in chains. Every ounce of Evelyn¿s experience suggests this girl was alive when she went in ¿ alive and terrified, clawing at the dark water. And she isn¿t alone ¿ other girls have recently met a similar fate. Cleveland¿s mayor, Daryl Pierson, doesn¿t like the bad press, nor does he like coming into contact with Evelyn again ¿ they were lovers once, a long time ago, and much has been left unsaid between them. Evelyn's hunt for the killer takes her into the highest and lowest levels of society and brings her face to face with a ghost from her past. But when the daughter of a prominent family disappears, she finds herself in a desperate bid to put the pieces of the puzzle together, before she is called, once again, to the water¿s edge.

A Trace of Poison: A Riveting Historical Mystery Set in the Home of Agatha Christie (A Phyllida Bright Mystery #2)
by Colleen Cambridge&“Balances Downton Abbey–style period charm with a tight plot that twists and turns right until the end… a plot that would satisfy Poirot.&” —Library Journal &“Dame Agatha would be proud.&” —Publishers Weekly In this captivating English murder mystery from an acclaimed author, Agatha Christie&’s housekeeper must uncover the killer amongst a throng of crime writers. In England&’s stately manor houses, murder is not generally a topic for polite conversation. Mallowan Hall, home to Agatha Christie and her husband, Max, is the exception. And housekeeper Phyllida Bright delights in discussing gory plot details with her friend and employer . . . The neighboring village of Listleigh has also become a hub of grisly goings-on, thanks to a Murder Fête organized to benefit a local orphanage. Members of The Detection Club—a group of celebrated authors such as G.K. Chesterton, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Agatha herself—will congregate for charitable events, including a writing contest for aspiring authors. The winner gets an international publishing contract, and entrants have gathered for a cocktail party—managed by the inimitable Phyllida—when murder strikes too close even for her comfort. It seems the victim imbibed a poisoned cocktail intended for Alastair Whittlesby, president of the local writers&’ club. The insufferable Whittlesby is thought to be a shoo-in for the prize, and ambition is certainly a worthy motive. But narrowing down these suspects could leave even Phyllida&’s favorite fictional detective, M. Poirot, twirling his mustache in frustration. It&’s a mystery too intriguing for Phyllida to resist, but one fraught with duplicity and danger, for every guest is an expert in murder—and how to get away with it . . .
