This book is written for great leaders, parents, coaches and mentors who want to become great teachers. The Seven Laws of Learning examines why people like Confucius, Nelson Mandela, Jesus, Winston Churchill, Evita Peron, Mahatma Gandhi and other extraordinary leaders were able to teach new ideas in ways that not only engaged people but persuaded them to use their free will to bring about personal and global change. Too many leaders forget the universal truth that messages- instead of being filled with facts and data- are most effectively communicated by storytelling, metaphor, and teaching that motivates and inspires. In the clutter of all of the data and discussion and PowerPoint slides and lists and handouts, too many leaders do little or nothing to capture the imagination and inspire us to improve, to grow and to change ourselves and our organizations in ways that matter. When you understand and apply the age-old principles you'll learn from The Seven Laws of Learning, your leadership, parenting, coaching and working with others will be more effective, and you will reap the rewards that always accompany great teaching. And, you will have a more positive and lasting impact on those with whom you interact.

In support of each portrait image is a setup image, an outtake image from the shoot, or both. Rodriguez is a master of lighting, so lighting diagrams are provided for every shot, making it easy for readers to adapt the setups to their own subjects and shooting style. The guide also provides ample description of the effects achieved through the selection of each light modifier and the placement of each light source within the overall setup. Posing techniques are covered in detail, with tips for both refining the appearance of the subject and for communicating the individual's personality through the pose selected. This book is a valuable addition to the library of any professional photographer or advanced student of photography.
For the hundreds of thousands who buy writers' guides every year, at last there's one that tells the ugly truth: writers who can't get published are usually making a lot of mistakes. This honest, often funny, book shows them how to identify their own missteps, stop listening to bad advice, and get to work. Drawing on his experience as founding editor of MacAdam/Cage, Pat Walsh gives writers what they need--specific, straightforward feedback to help them overcome bad habits and bad luck. Here is the first guide that tells writers just what the odds against them are and gives them practical tips for evening them.
From the author of Succeed and Focus, a quick and easy guide to motivating anyone - including yourself. There is no one-size-fits-all way to get people motivated. Anyone who tells you that you should do X to get the most out of your employees, your students, or even yourself, isn't telling you that - at best - X only works for some of the people, some of the time. In this short guide Heidi Grant Halvorson identifies the eight different types of underperformers and draws on research from her books Succeed and Focus to offer tailored strategies for lighting a fire under each one. Underperformers range from the truly achievement challenged to those who are actually performing at a high level but could perform even better if someone knew the right way to motivate them. Halvorson explains how we can understand each profile in terms of the mindset and motivational focus they bring to their work, in addition to the confidence with which they approach it. For each profile, each she lays out specific, evidence-based strategies for increasing effectiveness and engagement. Succinct and focused, this prescriptive guide will appeal to readers of What Successful People Do Before Breakfast and 9 Things Successful People Do Differently.
Eight simple money- and time-saving strategies to avoid probate. Includes a summary of the laws in each state.
Managing money is far more than a matter of balancing our checkbooks or picking investments. Witness the fact that many of us know what we ought to be doing with our money yet often just don't do it. This is the first personal finance book that gives us not only the knowledge of how to handle money, but also the power to break through the barriers that hold us back. Suze Orman, best-selling author of You've Earned It, Don 't Lose it, goes beyond the nuts and bolts of managing money to explore the psychological, even spiritual, power money has in our lives. Before we can get control of our finances, we must get control of our attitudes about money, feelings that were shaped by our earliest experiences with it. Letting go of these anxieties and creating new attitudes are the first steps of Suze Orman's program. Next comes mastering the practical elements of financial life: investments, credit, insurance, and estate and retirement planning. This book tells you everything you need to know to provide for yourself and your family, not abstract principles but specific, concrete, and easy-to-follow procedures. Here you will also find the latest tax code revisions regarding estate taxes, inheritance, and individual retirement allowances (IRAs), including vital information on the new Roth IRA and educational IRAs and how to make them work best for you. You'll also learn why you should trust your own instincts more than someone else's advice in making any financial decision. Finally come the most unusual -- and powerful -- steps: understanding the spiritual side of money. As Suze Orman explains, financial freedom is about realizing that we are worth far more than our money. Her program concludes by showing how to leave behind financial anxieties and open ourselves to true abundance, not only of the pocketbook but also of the heart.
Many famous authors write their novels in a matter of weeks. William Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying in six weeks. Joyce Carol Oates often cranks out two or three books a year. Stephen King believes first drafts should take no more than three months to complete. So, what's the trick? Novel writing isn't about inspiration. It's about the time, energy, and discipline to see the project to its finish. With 90 Days to Your Novel at your side, now is the time. This inspiring guide will be your push, your deadline, and your spark to finally, without excuses, and in three short months, nail that first draft of your novel. The difference between wanna-be writers and real writers is the difference between talk and work. If you commit to the schedule and the techniques within 90 Days to Your Novel and invest two to three hours a day for twelve weeks, you will complete your book. An outline will appear. Characters will take shape. A plot will emerge. Scenes will come together and form a story worth reading. And then the talking can begin!

For eighty-five years the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has been engaged in developing standards for sound academic practice and in working for the acceptance of these standards by the community of higher education. The Association has long been viewed as the authoritative voice of the academic profession in this regard. The AAUP's Policy Documents and Reports (widely known as The Redbook because of the color of its cover) presents in convenient format a wide range of policies, formulated at times in cooperation with other organizations. The current edition, the ninth (the first was published in 1968), includes basic statements on academic freedom, tenure, and due process; professional ethics; research and teaching; discrimination; academic governance; collective bargaining; students' rights and freedoms; and accreditation. Among the new documents not found in previous editions are statements on post-tenure review; tenure in the medical school; access to university records; the assignment of course grades and student appeals thereof; institutional responsibility for legal demands on faculty; distance education; intellectual property; and collegiality as a criterion for faculty evaluation. An appendix lists selected judicial decisions and scholarly writings that refer to AAUP standards. The documents in The Redbook offer guidance to all components of the academic community--trustees, administrators, faculty, and students--for the development of institutional policy and for the resolution of concrete issues as they arise.
From the book: At Overbrook, [School for the Blind] Dr. Davidow was instrumental in establishing the use of the Cranmer Abacus as a part of the regular curriculum. Her enthusiasm for this pioneer method of teaching mathematics led others to adopt the use of the abacus. In her role as coordinating teacher, she worked with the members of the Mathematics Department and the results were highly successful. Hopeful that this success at Overbrook might be experienced by many teachers elsewhere, she was encouraged to write this manual. Her goal was to write a clear, simple manual which could be used by teachers or students. This book represents her achievement.
