Emotional, Physical and Sexual Abuse

by Mario Maggi Giovanni Corona Emmanuele A. Jannini

This book describes different kinds of psychological, physical and sexual maltreatment and explains their possible consequences, especially as regards quality of life, psychopathology and sexual life. The focus is specifically on the victims of abuse, who are among the more frail and vulnerable members of society. The book examines the impacts of maltreatment of both children and social minorities, such as homosexuals and gender dysphoric individuals or those affected by disabilities and describes skills that are of value in supporting victims of maltreatment and preventing discrimination. The work will be useful to sexual medicine specialists, medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists, as well as graduate students in these disciplines. By fostering a better understanding of discrimination triggers and effects, it will help clinicians to provide improved support through the tailoring of therapies to the needs of maltreated individuals.

by Mario Maggi Giovanni Corona Emmanuele A. Jannini

This new edition aims to examine the impacts of maltreatment of both children and social minorities, such as homosexuals and gender dysphoric individuals or those affected by disabilities, in women, in patients, and describes skills that are of value in supporting victims of maltreatment and preventing discrimination. On this purpose, the new book is not only an update of the current literature on the topic, but will be also enriched by chapters dealing with the subtle border between courtship and harassment, with the responsibilities of the health professionals, with the role of internet and pornography in the “economy” of abuses and sexual slavery, with forensic aspects of the abuses and with therapy of both suffered and operated sexual violence starting from prevention as social education until medical approaches. This new edition will be particularly useful to sexual medicine specialists, medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists, as well as graduate students in these disciplines, but also to sociologists, educators and law professionals. By fostering a better understanding of discrimination triggers and effects, this new edition will help clinicians and mentors to provide improved support through the tailoring of therapies to the needs of maltreated and abused individuals.

Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking

by Leonard Mlodinow

We&’ve all been told that thinking rationally is the key to success. But at the cutting edge of science, researchers are discovering that feeling is every bit as important as thinking in this "lively exposé of the growing consensus about the limited power of rationality and decision-making" (The New York Times Book Review). You make hundreds of decisions every day, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest, and not one of those decisions would be possible without emotion. It has long been said that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior. But as Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of Subliminal, tells us, extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to our well-being as thinking. How can you connect better with others? How can you make sense of your frustration, fear, and anxiety? What can you do to live a happier life? The answers lie in understanding your emotions. Journeying from the labs of pioneering scientists to real-world scenarios that have flirted with disaster, Mlodinow shows us how our emotions can help, why they sometimes hurt, and what we can learn in both instances. Using deep insights into our evolution and biology, Mlodinow gives us the tools to understand our emotions better and to maximize their benefits. Told with his characteristic clarity and fascinating stories, Emotional explores the new science of feelings and offers us an essential guide to making the most of one of nature&’s greatest gifts.

Emotionally Disturbed: A History of Caring for America's Troubled Children

by Deborah Blythe Doroshow

Before the 1940s, children in the United States with severe emotional difficulties would have had few options for care. The first option was usually a child guidance clinic within the community, but they might also have been placed in a state mental hospital or asylum, an institution for the so-called feebleminded, or a training school for delinquent children. Starting in the 1930s, however, more specialized institutions began to open all over the country. Staff members at these residential treatment centers shared a commitment to helping children who could not be managed at home. They adopted an integrated approach to treatment, employing talk therapy, schooling, and other activities in the context of a therapeutic environment. Emotionally Disturbed is the first work to examine not only the history of residential treatment but also the history of seriously mentally ill children in the United States. As residential treatment centers emerged as new spaces with a fresh therapeutic perspective, a new kind of person became visible—the emotionally disturbed child. Residential treatment centers and the people who worked there built physical and conceptual structures that identified a population of children who were alike in distinctive ways. Emotional disturbance became a diagnosis, a policy problem, and a statement about the troubled state of postwar society. But in the late twentieth century, Americans went from pouring private and public funds into the care of troubled children to abandoning them almost completely. Charting the decline of residential treatment centers in favor of domestic care–based models in the 1980s and 1990s, this history is a must-read for those wishing to understand how our current child mental health system came to be.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Unleashing the Power of Authentic Life in Christ

by Peter Scazzero

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality integrates emotional health and contemplative spirituality that many current models of discipleship fail to address. Many sincere followers of Christ, those who are authentically passionate for God and engage in church activities such as participating in a small group and helping the poor in outreach services, are themselves in need of psychological and spiritual help; that is, even though many sincere Christians and Messianic Jews seem "mature" on the outside, inwardly they are spiritually immature and are severely struggling with interpersonal and unresolved emotional conflicts. This book offers psychological, biblical, and theological knowledge and strategies that will help Peter Scazzero's readers develop into emotionally-spiritually mature adults who will be able to live authentically and love God and each other. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Unleash a Revolution in Your Life in Christ besides being a book with interest for the general reader is also being used as a textbook in Christian colleges and seminaries to teach the fundamentals of Psychology and Pastoral Theology.

Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children

by Joan A. Friedman

Most parents try to treat their twins as individuals, but most unwittingly undermine their best intentions because they lack a practical set of guidelines for raising emotionally healthy multiples. Drawing on her unique experience as a twin, the mother of twins, and as a psychotherapist, Dr. Joan A. Friedman outlines the seven key concepts for helping twins develop into self-realized, unique individuals and offers parents specific strategies for each stage in their children’s growth. From how to set up the nursery to handling playdates and extracurricular activities, from deciding on same or separate classroom education to encouraging grandparents and other family members to think beyond the pair to see individuals, Emotionally Healthy Twins will become the standard reference for parenting twins.

Emotionally Indebted: Governing the Unemployed People in an Affective Economy

by Sabina Pultz

This book explores the lived experience of unemployment from a critical social psychological perspective. It connects the condition of unemployment to governance structures and wider societal issues, such as the labor market tendencies of precarity and enterprise culture. Based on qualitative data collected in Denmark and America, the book gives voice to unemployed people to critically discuss both the intended and unintended consequences of active labor market measures, as well as the frequent moral evaluations that surround unemployment. The author explores how unemployed people make sense of and deal with the demands and activities required by activation policies or ALMPs, which tend to make the job seekers responsible for finding a solution to their condition. Building from the subjective experience of unemployment, it maps the complex emotional demands on jobseekers who should feel shame and self-blame but also display motivation and passion on the labor market. Presenting emotions and feelings as pivotal instruments of the governmentality of worklessness, this book addresses the lack of critical discussion and research into the unemployment experience and offers a useful, provocative perspective for students, scholars, and practitioners alike in social psychology, social policy, economic policy, and related disciplines.

Emotionally Intelligent School Counseling

by Robin Stern Claudia Shelton John Pellitteri Barbara Muller-Ackerman

The concept of emotional intelligence (EI), which has steadily gained acceptance in psychology, seems particularly well suited to the work of school counselors and school psychologists who must constantly deal with troubled and underperforming students. To date, however, no book has systematically explained the theoretical and scientific foundations of emotional intelligence and integrated this information into the roles and functions of school counselors and other school personnel. In addition to illustrating how social emotional learning is important to both individual students and to school climate, the book also shows school counselors how to expand their own emotional awareness and resiliency. Key features of this outstanding new book include:*ASCA Guidelines. The book integrates the latest findings from the field of social emotional learning with the new ASCA guidelines for school counselors.*Real-life Cases. The book moves quickly from an overview of basic definitions, theories, and guidelines to stories of real counselors, administrators, teachers, and parents.*Author Expertise. John Pellitteri is Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in School Counseling Queens College (CUNY). A former school counselor, he is a leading researcher in the area of emotional intelligence. Barbara Ackerman is a K-5 school counselor and retiring Vice President of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) Elementary School Division. Claudia Shelton has been a school counselor in grades 6-12 and currently heads a firm specializing in professional development for schools. Essential reading for parents of grade schoolers through teens experiencing bullying, social exclusion, and teasing—with uplifting stories from young adults who have navigated those experiences and triumphed. The tween and teen years are rife with intense social challenges in school, friendships, sports, and other activities where instances of teasing, bullying, social exclusion and marginalization are unfortunately all too common. Social media has only made this behavior easier and more insidious. Emotionen in der interkulturellen Psychologie: Ein maschinell generierter Forschungsüberblick

by Thu Trang Vu Dung Vu Thi Mai Lan Nguyen

Emotions & Eating

by Joan Esherick

We all need to eat. Food is a basic life necessity, but it can mean so much more to us than merely taking in enough food to keep hunger at bay. We eat when we're sad, happy, bored, lonely, excited, and for many other reasons. Many people have complicated relationships with food and their emotions. For many of us, eating is a way to escape painful feelings. For others, no good feeling can go without a celebratory meal--and maybe even some overeating. But all this emotional eating can lead to serious health consequences, including obesity--the state of being very overweight. Learn more about why people's emotions push them to eat the way they do, and discover how people develop unhealthy emotional relationships with food. When you understand the risks of eating because of your emotions, you'll be able to understand your body's needs better--and you'll know how to stick with healthy eating, no matter how you're feeling.
