Cases and Stories of Transformative Action Research: Five Decades of Collaborative Action and Learning
by John A. BiloruskyCases and Stories of Transformative Action Research builds on its companion book, Principles and Methods of Transformative Action Research, by describing and analyzing dozens of examples of successful action research efforts pursued in the past five decades by students and faculty of the Western Institute for Social Research. Some projects are large-scale, and some are modest interventions in the everyday lives of those participating. Some are formal organizational efforts; others are the results of individual or small group initiatives. Included are chapters on community needs assessments and innovative grassroots approaches to program evaluation; the challenges of improving our decision-making during the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic; strategies of intellectual activism in addressing the growing problem of workplace bullying; action research to preserve and share the history of the Omaha tribe; and plans for an innovative school-based project based on collaborative action-and-inquiry between students and Artificial Intelligence. In addition, there are a number of detailed stories about the use of transformative action research in such areas as somatic and trauma counseling, ethnic studies, health disparities, gender differences, grassroots popular education, and the improvement of statewide steps for preventing child abuse, among many others. This book can serve as an undergraduate or graduate social sciences text on research methods. It is also a guidebook for action-oriented research by academics, professionals, and lay people alike.
Cases in Clinical Forensic Psychology
by Margo C. WattClinical forensic psychology is defined by the application of clinical psychology – assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and consultation – in legal contexts. The term captures the integration of clinical psychology as an applied professional discipline and forensic psychology as an experimental discipline. Cases in Clinical Forensic Psychology offers a series of case studies that allow readers to take an up-close and personal look at the criminal justice system in Canada. Clinical forensic psychologist Margo C.Watt examines the particulars of each case, including the biological, psychological, social, cultural, and legal factors. The book takes an evidence-based approach and highlights how the science of clinical forensic psychology informs all aspects of criminal cases: police investigative techniques, eyewitness testimony, pretrial publicity, jury selection and decision-making, forensic evaluations, psychological autopsies, mental health in corrections, and mo.re. Examining incidents ranging from false confessions to wrongful convictions to deaths in custody and the criminals who got away, Cases in Clinical Forensic Psychology questions how and why these events happened and considers what we can learn from them.

Cassandra's Daughter: A History of Psychoanalysis
by Joseph SchwartzThis work presents a complete history of psychoanalysis from its origins in 19th-century medical science to the end of the 20th century. The origins of psychoanalysis as well as the more immediate influences on Freud are explored, as is the way the discipline he founded has developed and changed.Joseph Schwartz first lays out the late Victorian approaches to mental illness and health and explains the context in which Freud's revolution took place. He traces the evolution of Freud's own thought, then shows how and why the rifts and shifts in the analytic community occurred. He then focuses on Freud's colleagues, rivals, successors and detractors - Jung, Adler, Sullivan, Melanie Klein, Erich Fromm to name a few. For once we see how the different schools and interpretations fit together - how they grew in response to each other, and what separate contributions each pioneer made over the last hundred years to create an effective understanding of the world of human subjective experience.

Caste Discrimination and Exclusion in Indian Universities: A Critical Reflection
by N. SukumarThis book studies the exclusion and discrimination that is meted out to Scheduled Caste (SC) students in the Indian Higher Education system, and the psychosocial consequences of such practices. It foregrounds the conceptual debates around caste, exclusion, and reservations in Indian academia, discussing the social dominance and the roots of prejudices in the university spaces. The volume reflects upon the fragile social world in which students from the margins struggle for survival in the academic space. It reveals that these students navigate the various facets of academia – like classrooms, pedagogy, scholarships, hostels, peer groups, and teachers – only to find the academic space a dystopian universe. The book also sheds light on suicide cases committed by the marginalized groups as a testimony of protest. Based on in-depth ethnographic research, this book will be of interest to teachers, students and researchers of education, sociology, political science, psychology, and exclusion studies. It will also be useful for policymakers, social activists, NGOs, research centers, and those working in higher education, reservations, public policy, caste, and exclusion studies.
Castration: Ideas in Psychoanalysis
by Ivan WardFrom fashion to football, in our dreams and epiphanies, through jealous rages and moments of genius, the effects of castration anxiety, so claims Ivan Ward, are ever-present. Freud's famous 'castration complex' is met with continually in analytic experience. Yet it seems an unbelievable idea. Taking his evidence from myth, clinical practice and the sexual theories of children, Freud established the castration complex as one of the determining factors of human sexual desire and personality development. Ideas in Psychoanalysis continues to go where no other books dare.
Casualties Of Childhood: A Developmental Perspective On Sexual Abuse Using Projective Drawings
by Bobbie Kaufman Agnes WohlAgainst the backdrop of powerful case vignettes and their accompanying House, Tree, Person and Kinetic Family Drawings, the discussion focuses primarily on the essential link between childhood sexual abuse and specific developmental problems. Given that sexual abuse is commonly directed toward latency-age young people, it is imperative that this connection be given greater emphasis in the literature. The book represents an important step in that direction. In sum, the authors bring to life the full dimension of sexual victimization, its meaning and consequences for the individual, the family, and by extension, the society. For therapists of all persuasions, it is a much-needed resource.
Casusboek ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in de behandelpraktijk
Casusboek EMDR: 25 Voorbeelden Uit De Praktijk
Catalepsy, Memory and Suggestion in Psychological Automatism: Total Automatism
by Pierre JanetPierre Janet’s L'Automatisme psychologique, originally published in 1889, is one of the earliest and most important books written on the study of trauma and dissociation. Here it is made available, in two volumes, in English for the first time, with a new preface by Giuseppe Craparo and Onno van der Hart. Catalepsy, Memory, and Suggestion in Psychological Automatism, the first volume, examines three aspects of trauma and dissociation. Janet first explores catalepsy and analogous states, including comparing catalepsy to somnambulism, then discusses somnambulism, memory, and forgetting. Finally, Janet considers suggestion, amnesia, and distraction, as well as considering characteristics of suggestible individuals. Janet’s work is an unsurpassed experimental study of human actions in their simplest and most rudimentary forms, and a fundamental contribution to our understanding of trauma-related dissociation. This seminal work will be of great interest to researchers and students of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and modernism, as well as psychotherapists and psychoanalysts working with clients who have experienced trauma. It is accompanied by Subconscious Acts, Anesthesias, and Psychological Disaggregation in Psychological Automatism: Partial Automatism.

Catch Them Before They Fall: Psychoanalysis Of Mental Breakdown
by Christopher BollasIn this exploration of a radical approach to the psychoanalytical treatment of people on the verge of mental breakdown, Christopher Bollas offers a new and courageous clinical paradigm. He suggests that the unconscious purpose of breakdown is to present the self to the other for transformative understanding; to have its core distress met and understood directly. If caught in time, a breakdown can become a breakthrough. It is an event imbued with the most profound personal significance, but it requires deep understanding if its meaning is to be released to its transformative potential. Bollas believes that hospitalization, intensive medication and CBT/DBT all negate this opportunity, and he proposes that many of these patients should instead be offered extended, intensive psychoanalysis. This book will be of interest to clinicians who find that, with patients on the verge of breakdown, conventional psychoanalytical work is insufficient to meet the emerging crisis. However, Bollas’s challenging proposal will provoke many questions and in the final section of the book some of these are raised by Sacha Bollas and presented in a question-and-answer form.
