Saint Katharine Drexel, Apostle to the Oppressed
by Lou BaldwinFrom the book: When the Catholic Church, through the intricate canonization process, declares an individual a saint, it gives recognition to the heroic virtue of his or her life, and says, "Beyond a doubt, this wonderful person has achieved what should be the goal of everyone - salvation." While canonization bestows a certain amount of honor and glory on the newly named saint, the real purpose is to present that holy man or woman as a worthy example for those of us still on earth. Katharine Drexel cannot be dismissed as a social worker in religious garb. Nor is she merely the foundress of a religious congregation for women. Her "heroic virtue" shines through on several levels. First of all, there is her own formation in an extraordinarily pious family, which looked beyond wealth to man's duty to man. There is also her own complete renunciation of money and the things it buys for service to others. There is her great love of God, best exemplified by her devotion to the Eucharistic Christ. There is her deep empathy with people of color, flying in the face of the prevailing prejudices of her day. And ultimately, there is her determination to help these same persecuted people know Jesus Christ, a commission accepted by all too few of her own co-religionists. Katharine Drexel became a saint, not by flat of the Pope, but by showing others a road to sanctity. Her path might be different than that of a St. Isaac Jogues, a St. Paul or a Dorothy Day - ultimately we choose our own path. But her example is one of the shining guideposts that can guide us as we journey in this new millennium.

Saladin
by David Nicolle Peter DennisThis Osprey Command book looks closely at the early life, military experiences and key battlefield exploits of Al-Malik al-Nasir Yusuf Ibn Najm al-Din Ayyub Ibn Shahdi Abu'l-Muzaffar Salah al-Din - or Saladin as he is more commonly known outside the Islamic world - who is broadly regarded as the greatest hero of the Crusades, even in Europe. Most chroniclers present him as a man of outstanding virtue, courage and political skill. More recently, however, efforts have been made to portray Saladin as an ambitious, ruthless and even devious politician, and as a less brilliant commander than it normally thought. This book sets out to reveal that the truth is, as usual, somewhere in between. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Salsa Dancing into the Social Sciences: Research in an Age of Info-glut
by Kristin Luker“You might think that dancing doesn’t have a lot to do with social research, and doing social research is probably why you picked this book up in the first place. But trust me. Salsa dancing is a practice as well as a metaphor for a kind of research that will make your life easier and better.” Savvy, witty, and sensible, this unique book is both a handbook for defining and completing a research project, and an astute introduction to the neglected history and changeable philosophy of modern social science. In this volume, Kristin Luker guides novice researchers in: knowing the difference between an area of interest and a research topic; defining the relevant parts of a potentially infinite research literature; mastering sampling, operationalization, and generalization; understanding which research methods best answer your questions; beating writer’s block. Most important, she shows how friendships, non-academic interests, and even salsa dancing can make for a better researcher. “You know about setting the kitchen timer and writing for only an hour, or only 15 minutes if you are feeling particularly anxious. I wrote a fairly large part of this book feeling exactly like that. If I can write an entire book 15 minutes at a time, so can you.”

Same Sex Love, 1700–1957: A History and Research Guide
by Gill RossiniFamily history is often seen as the stories of people who were part of a traditional family unit, married to someone of the opposite gender, had children and lived their lives as 'normally' as possible. But what of the relatives who could not accept that this was the life for them, and were attracted to same-sex partners? Was it possible for them to live their life as they wished to, with their chosen partner and without hindrance, ridicule or attack? Would they be breaking the law in doing so, and how would family and society react if they were found out? Some of those concerned married and had children, like the majority, and buried their feelings in the bustle of everyday life; others stayed single but abstained from relationships altogether, as a way of keeping safe. A number managed to live openly and proudly as themselves, challenging the prejudices and misconceptions of the day. This is the story of all those people, the brave, the discreet, the frightened, the loving and the loved, as well as love against all the odds; more than likely, it is a story that can be found in every family history.Told in an empathetic and clear-sighted way, this is the first history of same-sex relationships aimed specifically at family historians and offers valuable insights into the lives of those who were often seen as outcasts. It includes research guidance for genealogists researching this often-neglected aspect of family history, and offers invaluable insights into the families, society and culture they lived in.
Samuel Johnson: Selected Writings: A Tercentenary Celebration
by Samuel JohnsonThanks to Boswell’s monumental biography of Samuel Johnson, we remember Dr. Johnson today as a great wit and conversationalist, the rationalist epitome and the sage of the Enlightenment. He is more often quoted than read, his name invoked in party conversation on such diverse topics as marriage, sleep, deceit, mental concentration, and patriotism, to generally humorous effect. But in Johnson’s own day, he was best known as an essayist, critic, and lexicographer: a gifted writer possessed of great force of mind and wisdom. Writing a century after Johnson, Ruskin wrote of Johnson’s essays: He “taught me to measure life, and distrust fortune…he saved me forever from false thoughts and futile speculations.” Peter Martin here presents “the heart of Johnson,” a selection of some of Johnson’s best moral and critical essays. At the center of this collection are the periodical essays from the Rambler, Adventurer, and Idler. Also included are Johnson’s great moral fable, Rasselas; the Prefaces to the Dictionary and his edition of Shakespeare; and selections from Lives of the Poets. Together, these works—allied in their literary, social, and moral concerns—are the ones that continue to speak urgently to readers today.

Samurai 1550-1600
by Angus Mcbride Anthony BryantThis title details the culture, weapons, armour and training of the elite samurai warrior class in the fascinating Age of Battles period (1550-1600). This was a period of vital importance not only because of the political effects of the chaos but also due to the changes in warfare that occurred. In 1542 the Portuguese introduced the matchlock musket into Japanese warfare, and this book traces the effect that this important innovation had on the samurai. Life outside the field of battle is also examined, making this an unmissable book for those interested in this brave warrior caste.
San Antonio Uncovered: Fun Facts and Hidden Histories
by Robert Rivard Mark Louis RybczykIt has been said that every Texan has two hometowns: his own and San Antonio. Its charm, colorful surroundings, and diverse cultures combine to make the Alamo City one of the most interesting places in Texas and the nation. In San Antonio Uncovered, Mark Rybczyk examines some of San Antonio's legends and ghost stories, takes a nostalgic look at landmarks that have disappeared, introduces some of the city's characters and unusual features, debunks a few local myths, and corrects some misconceptions.Rybczyk embraces San Antonio's peculiarities by chronicling the cross-country journey of the World's Largest Boots to their home in front of North Star Mall, the origins of the Frito corn chip and chewing gum, the annual Cornyation of King Anchovy, and Dwight Eisenhower's stint as the football coach at St Mary's University. The third edition of San Antonio Uncovered highlights San Antonio as a modern, thriving city with the feel of a small town that sees beauty in the old and fights to save it, even if it is something as seemingly insignificant as an old Humble Oil Station, and its diverse inhabitants as those who appreciate the blending of the old and the new at the Tobin Center and fight to save what's left of the Hot Wells Hotel.
