The Lincoln Assassination: The Evidence

by Edward Steers William C. Edwards

On April 22, 1865, Brevet Colonel H. L. Burnett was assigned to head the investigation into the murder of President Abraham Lincoln and the attempted murder of Secretary of State William H. Seward. Burnett orchestrated the collection of thousands of documents for the Military Commission's trial of the conspirators. This deep archive of documentary evidence--consisting of letters, depositions, eyewitness accounts, investigative reports, and other documents--provides invaluable insight into the historical, cultural, and judicial context of the investigation. Only a fraction of the information presented in these documents ever made its way into the trial, and most of it has never been readily accessible. By presenting an annotated and indexed transcription of these documents, this volume offers significant new access to information on the events surrounding the assassination and a vast new store of social and political history of the Civil War era. "With tears in my eyes I think it your duty to hang every rebel caught. I feel as bad as if was my own mother or father & will be one to volunteer to try & shoot every Southern man. May God have mercy on the man's soul that done such a deed. With much Respect for our Country, I remain Weeping" --Anonymous letter, New York, April 15, 1865 "I know Booth. He was in the habit of coming to my place to shoot. . . . He shot well, and practiced to shoot with accuracy in every possible position. . . . He was a quick shot; always silent, reticent." --Deposition of Benjamin Barker, Pistol Gallery proprietor

The Literature of Formative Judaism: The Midrash Compilations (The\origins Of Judaism Ser. #Vol. 11)

by Jacob Neusner

First published in 1991. This is Volume XI, Part II of a set of twenty volumes of essays and articles on the religion, history and literature on the origins of Judaism. This text looks at to the canon, or holy literature, of Judaism. That literature covers what is called “the Oral Torah.” To understand the concept of the Oral Torah, we have to return to the generative myth of the Judaism that has predominated. For that Judaism appeals to a theory of revelation in two media of formulation and transmission, written and oral, in books and in memory. The written Torah is the Pentateuch and encompasses the whole of the Hebrew Scriptures of ancient Israel (the “Old Testament”). The Oral Torah is ultimately contained in and written down as the Mishnah, expanded and amplified by Tosefta, and the two Talmuds, on the one side, and the Midrash-compilations that serve to explain the written Torah, on the other.

The Little Black Book of Writers' Wisdom

by Steven D. Price

Author and journalist Gene Fowler put it best: "Writing is easy; all you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper until the drops of blood form on your forehead." Anyone who has ever wanted or been required to create something more complicated than a shopping list or a Tweet knows there's more truth than poetry in the observation. The process can be difficult, frustratingly so when we realize that although we use words all the time, coming up with the right ones can be a daunting task.Even the most celebrated writers have reflected on this creative process, and their observations and conclusions are collected in this book. The compiler, himself no stranger to a blank page or computer screen, has selected the wisest and wittiest utterances on such subjects as why we write (Ernest Hemingway: "I have a good life but I must write because if I do not write a certain amount I do not enjoy the rest of my life."); how to write (Anton Chekhov: "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."); and writing for money (Cormac McCarthy: "I never had any doubts about my abilities. I knew I could write. I just had to figure out how to eat while doing this.").It has been said that reading won't make you a good writer, but it will make you a better writer. Dip into this lively and useful treasure trove, and you'll be well on your way.
