by Dana Gulling

This book offers architects strategies in the design and manufacturing of custom, repetitively manufactured building components.A total of 36 case studies from around the globe demonstrate the diversity of CRM in architecture and are contributed by architecture firms, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Kengo Kuma & Associates, Abin Design Studio, Behnisch Architekten, Belzberg Architects, and many more. Projects included are of buildings of various types, sizes, and clients, and many deviate from the typical manufacturing process as they include a secondary process (e.g. casting glass, then slumping it), special tooling modifications (e.g. dams used to subdivide a mold), post-production processes, or other notable manufacturing features. Each case study includes a project overview, behind‐the‐scenes images of the component manufacturing, and original diagrams that illustrate how those components were customized.Custom Components in Architecture will be essential reading for any architect interested in building design details and keeping up-to-speed on material advances. Customary Law Today

by Laurent Mayali Pierre Mousseron

This book addresses current practices in customary law. It includes contributions by scholars from various legal systems (the USA, France, Israel, Canada etc.), who examine the current impacts of customary law on various aspects of private law, constitutional law, business law, international law and criminal law. In addition, the book expands the traditional concept of the rule of law, and argues that lawyers should not narrowly focus on statutory law, but should instead pay more attention to the impact of practices on “real legal life.” It states that the observation of practices calls for a stronger focus on usage, customs and traditions in our legal systems – the idea being not to replace statutory law, but to complement it with customary observations.

Cynical International Law?: Abuse and Circumvention in Public International and European Law (Beiträge zum ausländischen öffentlichen Recht und Völkerrecht #296)

by Björnstjern Baade Dana Burchardt Prisca Feihle Alicia Köppen Linus Mührel Lena Riemer Raphael Schäfer

Analysing international law through the prism of “cynicism” makes it possible to look beyond overt disregard for international law, currently discussed in terms of a backlash or crisis. The concept allows to analyse and criticise structural features and specific uses of international law that seem detrimental to international law in a more subtle way. Unlike its ancient predecessor, cynicism nowadays refers not to a bold critique of power but to uses and abuses of international law that pursue one-sided interests tacitly disregarding the legal structure applied. From this point of view, the contributions critically reflect on the theoretical foundations of international law, in particular its relationship to power, actors such as the International Law Commission and international judges, and specific fields, including international human rights, humanitarian, criminal, tax and investment law.

Cyprus 1974: Anatomy of an Invasion (Europa Country Perspectives)

by William Mallinson Vassilis Fouskas

Conventional wisdom and ideologies hold that responsibility for the partition of the Republic of Cyprus in the wake of Turkey’s multiple advances on the island in summer 1974 rests on domestic ethnic and religious tensions between the Turks and the Greeks. This book, drawing on a wealth of archival material, shows that this is not the case at all. As the detailed report of the United Nations mediator, Galo Plaza, had shown in 1965, the Turks and the Greeks living on the island could easily have co-existed if left alone to determine their future. This did not happen. The partition of the island had been inscribed in NATO’s policy since the 1950s, rewarding the strongest component of NATO’s southern flank, Turkey, at the expense of Greece, the weaker component. The volume details the role of CIA agents in Greece and the machinations of the Greek junta of Dimitrios Ioannides to overthrow the charismatic leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, who had been fighting for an independent and non-aligned Cyprus. It also explains how the partition of Cyprus in 1974 has opened up prospects for the partition of the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey, with Greece’s eastern Aegean islands becoming ‘NATOlands’ in the service of the war against Russia. The volume is an essential reading for researchers and students of the history and politics of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and south-eastern Europe.
