Chapters on present and former use of the comma, apostrophe, colon, semicolon, dash, ellipses, other punctuation marks presented with humor. You'll laugh and be entertained as well as edified. People who read by listening will have a problem because the words will sound the same whether they are spelled nd punctuated correctly or not, e.g., d o n apostrophe t or d o n t. You may need to have punctuation spoken, at least for the chapter on the apostrophe, or have someone read to you and explain.

Eco-Cognitive Computationalism: Cognitive Domestication of Ignorant Entities (Cognitive Systems Monographs #43)

by Lorenzo Magnani

This book mainly focuses on the widely distributed nature of computational tools, models, and methods, ultimately related to the current importance of computational machines as mediators of cognition. An entirely new eco-cognitive approach to computation is offered, to underline the question of the overwhelming cognitive domestication of ignorant entities, which is persistently at work in our current societies. Eco-cognitive computationalism does not aim at furnishing an ultimate and static definition of the concepts of information, cognition, and computation, instead, it intends, by respecting their historical and dynamical character, to propose an intellectual framework that depicts how we can understand their forms of “emergence” and the modification of their meanings, also dealing with impressive unconventional non-digital cases. The new proposed perspective also leads to a clear description of the divergence between weak and strong levels of creative “abductive” hypothetical cognition: weak accomplishments are related to “locked abductive strategies”, typical of computational machines, and deep creativity is instead related to “unlocked abductive strategies”, which characterize human cognizers, who benefit from the so-called “eco-cognitive openness”.

Ecology Revisited

by Kurt Jax Astrid Schwarz

As concerns about humankind's relationship with the environment move inexorably up the agenda, this volume tells the story of the history of the concept of ecology itself and adds much to the historical and philosophical debate over this multifaceted discipline. The text provides readers with an overview of the theoretical, institutional and historical formation of ecological knowledge. The varied local conditions of early ecology are considered in detail, while epistemological problems that lie on the borders of ecology, such as disunity and complexity, are discussed. The book traces the various phases of the history of the concept of ecology itself, from its 19th century origins and antecedents, through the emergence of the environmental movement in the later 20th century, to the future, and how ecology might be located in the environmental science framework of the 21st century. The study of 'ecological' phenomena has never been confined solely to the work of researchers who consider themselves ecologists. It is rather a field of knowledge in which a plurality of practices, concepts and theories are developed. Thus, there exist numerous disciplinary subdivisions and research programmes within the field, the boundaries of which remain blurred. As a consequence, the deliberation to adequately identify the ecological field of knowledge, its epistemic and institutional setting, is still going on. This will be of central importance not only in locating ecology in the frame of 21st century environmental sciences but also for a better understanding of how nature and culture are intertwined in debates about pressing problems, such as climate change, the protection of species diversity, or the management of renewable resources.
