J. I. Packer: His Life and Thought
by Alister McGrathJ. I. Packer was one of the most influential evangelical theological and spiritual writers of the twentieth century, best known for his classic work Knowing God. In the 1990s Christianity Today readers named him one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century, second only to C. S. Lewis. But who was Jim Packer, and what is the story of the man behind the writings? Alister McGrath, a bestselling author and friend of Packer, tells the story of Packer's faith and how it sustained him during his time in England and Canada. Along the way he explores Packer's many contributions to theology and spirituality, alternating narrative with reflection. By engagingly setting out Packer's ideas and the central themes of his work, McGrath helps to explain why Packer and his writing continue to be so helpful to millions on the journey of encountering God. This beautiful recollection of a giant of the Christian faith is both a celebration of his life and the perfect introduction to his thought and writings for a new generation of readers.
J. Krishnamurti: Self-Inquiry, Awakening, and Transformation (Elements in New Religious Movements)
by Constance A. JonesThis Element explores the life, teaching, and legacy of philosopher and spiritual teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti. From an obscure childhood in south India, he was 'discovered' at age fourteen by the Theosophical Society as the vehicle for the prophesied World Teacher of this cosmic age. At age 34, he disaffiliated from the Society, became an independent teacher, and, for sixty years, traveled widely and addressed thousands of audiences on the need to develop awareness and attention for transformation of consciousness. His teaching defines the human condition as perilous, dominated almost completely by cultural and personal conditioning, fear, and negative emotions. Freedom from these perils, his teaching states, occurs through rigorous self-observation and inquiry in the search for truth. While extremely popular, Krishnamurti rejected the mantle of authority invariably attributed to spiritual masters and teachers. He created schools in his name to implement his pedagogy of non-authoritarianism and freedom from conditioning.

In three parts, structured around the persons of the Trinity, Sanders explores matters like: how we should view God, why our weakness is God&’s strength, what it means that Christ prays for us, how to live like an heir of the King, and the role of the Spirit in a Christian&’s life. Spiritual Maturity provides clear direction for those desiring to grow strong spiritually.Spiritual Discipleship: True disciples pursue their Master. They know that God is watching over their faith, but they also take Scripture&’s command seriously: &“work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you.&” They take pains, by His power, to look more and more like Jesus. This book will help you to be such a disciple. It examines Jesus&’ teaching on what it means to follow Him, helping you become the kind of Christian Jesus wants you to be—not one devised by man or even other Christians. You&’ll learn conditions for discipleship, the tests that disciples endure, how disciples pray and grow, the posture and practices of a disciple, and more.
J. S. Bach: The Complete Cantatas
by Richard Stokes Martin NearyIn Lutheran Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries, Sunday church services were five hours long. There would be prayers, liturgy, communion, an hour-long sermon, congregational hymn singing and a 15- to 25-minute "cantata" composed of chorus, vocal solos, and a hymn. These are sometimes referred to as "sermons in music." For a period of five years from 1723 to 1728 Johann Sebastian Bach wrote one of these cantatas almost every week. Sadly, almost 100 of these are lost. Bach's roughly 210 surviving cantatas are a major component of the western musical canon. This book contains their texts and English translations along with those for the Christmas and Easter oratorios. These surviving cantatas contain approximately 245 soprano arias, 223 alto arias, 249 tenor arias, 259 bass arias, many duets, a few trios and a couple of quartets. And all of them are inspired and inspiring. For this Bookshare edition, DAISY markup is provided so that each cantata title is at level 1 and each cantata movement is at level 2. To search for a particular cantata, type BWV, a space, its number, and another space. Each movement is presented fully in its original language (usually German) and then in English translation. To search for a particular movement (Sheep May Safely Graze, for example) which is the ninth movement of Cantata 208, type 208.9. Or to find the text of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring which is the sixth movement of Cantata 147, type 147.6. To quote Bach about music, its only purpose "is the praise of God and the recreation of the soul." Using a music service to which you subscribe or YouTube, ask it to play Bach Cantata 1 or Bach Cantata 51 or Bach Cantata 140 and see if you feel these works of music accomplish their composer's objective for you. For a sense of Bach's humor, ask your music service or YouTube to play Bach Cantata 211 (the Coffee Cantata) or Bach Cantata 212 (the Peasant Cantata). For instrumentation of all the cantatas and their individual movements, see the web site bach-cantatas.com because instrumentation is not included in this book. That site also provides commentary and translations into several other languages as these works continue to have worldwide interest.

J.R.R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth: Understanding Middle Earth
by Bradley J. BirzerWith a new introduction by the authorPeter Jackson's film version of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy - and the accompanying Rings-related paraphernalia and publicity - has played a unique role in the disemmination of Tolkien's imaginative creation to the masses. Yet, for most readers and viewers, the underlying meaning of Middle-earth has remained obscure. Bradley Birzer has remedied that with this fresh study. In J.R.R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth: Understanding Middle-earth, Birzer reveals the surprisingly specific religious symbolism that permeates Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. He also explores the social and political views that motivated the Oxford don, ultimately situating Tolkien within the Christian humanist tradition represented by Thomas More and T.S. Eliot, Dante and C.S. Lewis. Birzer argues that through the genre of myth Tolkien created a world that is essentially truer than the one we think we see around us everyday, a world that transcends the colorless disenchantment of our postmodern age.
J.R.R. Tolkien: The Mind Behind the Rings (Christian Encounters Ser.)
by Mark HorneChristian Encounters, a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church. Some are familiar faces. Others are unexpected guests. But all, through their relationships, struggles, prayers, and desires, uniquely illuminate our shared experience. Born in South Africa and growing up in Great Britain, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Ronald as he was known, led a young life filled with uncertainty and instability. His was not a storybook childhood- his father died when Ronald was three years old, and his mother died just before he reached adolescence. Left under the guardianship of his mother's friend and priest, Ronald forged his closest relationships with friends who shared his love for literature and languages. As Tolkien grew older, married, served as a soldier, and became a well-respected Oxford professor publishing weighty works on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf, the Christian faith that his mother had instilled in him continued as an intrinsic element of his creative imagination and his everyday life.It was through The Hobbit and the three-volume The Lord of the Rings that Tolkien became a literary giant throughout the world. In his fiction, which earned him the informal title of "the father of modern fantasy literature," Tolkien presents readers with a vision of freedom- nothing preachy- that a strong, unequivocal faith can transmit.
J: A Novel
by Howard JacobsonFinalist for the 2014 Man Booker Prize"J is a snarling, effervescent, and ambitious philosophical work of fiction that poses unsettling questions about our sense of history, and our self-satisfied orthodoxies. Jacobson's triumph is to craft a novel that is poignant as well as troubling from the debris." --Independent (UK) Man Booker Prize-winner Howard Jacobson's brilliant and profound new novel, J, "invites comparison with George Orwell's 1984 and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World" (Sunday Times, London). Set in a world where collective memory has vanished and the past is a dangerous country, not to be talked about or visited, J is a boldly inventive love story, both tender and terrifying. Kevern Cohen doesn't know why his father always drew two fingers across his lips when he said a word starting with a J. It wasn't then, and isn't now, the time or place to be asking questions. When the extravagantly beautiful Ailinn Solomons arrives in his village by a sea that laps no other shore, Kevern is instantly drawn to her. Although mistrustful by nature, the two become linked as if they were meant for each other. Together, they form a refuge from the commonplace brutality that is the legacy of a historic catastrophe shrouded in suspicion, denial, and apology, simply referred to as WHAT HAPPENED, IF IT HAPPENED. To Ailinn's guardian, Esme Nussbaum, Ailinn and Kevern are fragile shoots of hopefulness. As this unusual pair's actions draw them into ever-increasing danger, Esme is determined to keep them together--whatever the cost. In this stunning, evocative, and terribly heartbreaking work, where one couple's love affair could have shattering consequences for the human race, Howard Jacobson gathers his prodigious gifts for the crowning achievement of a remarkable career. From the Hardcover edition.

JEWels: Teasing Out the Poetry in Jewish Humor and Storytelling
by Peninnah SchramJEWels is the first of its kind: the living tradition of Jewish stories and jokes transformed into poems, recording and reflecting Jewish experience from ancient times through the present day. In this novel hybrid—jokes and stories boiled down to their essence in short poems—Jewish witticism is preserved side by side with evocative storytelling and deepened with running commentary and questions for discussion. Illuminated here are jewels from journeys, from the Old Country, from Torah, shaped by the Holocaust, in glimpses of Jewish American lives, in Jewish foods, in conversations with God, and on the meaning of life. Jewish comedians (Lenny Bruce, Jackie Mason) appear alongside writers and musicians (Elie Wiesel, Sholem Aleichem, Itzhak Perlman) and Hasidic rabbis (the Baal Shem Tov, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov), yet most of the tellers are ordinary Jews. In this cacophony of ongoing dialogue, storytellers, rabbis, poets, and scholars chime in with interpretations, quips, and related stories and life experiences. In JEWels each of us can see our own reflection.
JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters
by James W. DouglassThe acclaimed book Oliver Stone called "the best account I have read of this tragedy and its significance,"JFK and the Unspeakable details not just how the conspiracy to assassinate President John F. Kennedy was carried out, but WHY it was done...and why it still matters today. At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy's change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence. Once these dark "Unspeakable" forces recognized that Kennedy's interests were in direct opposition to their own, they tagged him as a dangerous traitor, plotted his assassination, and orchestrated the subsequent cover-up. Douglass takes readers into the Oval Office during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, along on the strange journey of Lee Harvey Oswald and his shadowy handlers, and to the winding road in Dallas where an ambush awaited the President's motorcade. As Douglass convincingly documents, at every step along the way these forces of the Unspeakable were present, moving people like pawns on a chessboard to promote a dangerous and deadly agenda. JFK and the Unspeakable shot up to the top of the bestseller charts when Oliver Stone first brought it to the world's attention on Bill Maher's show. Since then, it has been lauded by Mark Lane (author of Rush to Judgment, who calls it "an exciting work with the drama of a first-rate thriller"), John Perkins (author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, who proclaims it is "arguably the most important book yet written about an American president), and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. , who calls it "a very well-documented and convincing portrait...I urge all Americans to read this book and come to their own conclusions. "
Jabotinsky's Children: Polish Jews and the Rise of Right-Wing Zionism
by Daniel Kupfert HellerHow interwar Poland and its Jewish youth were instrumental in shaping the ideology of right-wing ZionismBy the late 1930s, as many as fifty thousand Polish Jews belonged to Betar, a youth movement known for its support of Vladimir Jabotinsky, the founder of right-wing Zionism. Poland was not only home to Jabotinsky’s largest following. The country also served as an inspiration and incubator for the development of right-wing Zionist ideas. Jabotinsky’s Children draws on a wealth of rare archival material to uncover how the young people in Betar were instrumental in shaping right-wing Zionist attitudes about the roles that authoritarianism and military force could play in the quest to build and maintain a Jewish state.Recovering the voices of ordinary Betar members through their letters, diaries, and autobiographies, Jabotinsky’s Children paints a vivid portrait of young Polish Jews and their turbulent lives on the eve of the Holocaust. Rather than define Jabotinsky as a firebrand fascist or steadfast democrat, the book instead reveals how he deliberately delivered multiple and contradictory messages to his young followers, leaving it to them to interpret him as they saw fit. Tracing Betar’s surprising relationship with interwar Poland’s authoritarian government, Jabotinsky’s Children overturns popular misconceptions about Polish-Jewish relations between the two world wars and captures the fervent efforts of Poland’s Jewish youth to determine, on their own terms, who they were, where they belonged, and what their future held in store.Shedding critical light on a vital yet neglected chapter in the history of Zionism, Jabotinsky’s Children provides invaluable perspective on the origins of right-wing Zionist beliefs and their enduring allure in Israel today.
