Journal of George Fox: Being An Historical Account Of The Life, Travels, Sufferings, Christian Experiences, And Labour Of Love, In The Work Of The Ministry, Of That Eminent And Faithful Servant Of Jesus Christ ... ;

by George Fox

Still commonly read today, The Journal of George Fox is the autobiography of one of the founders of the Quaker movement. British preacher GEORGE FOX (1624-1691) here details his spiritual journey from the time he was a young boy, through his spiritual crisis at the age of nineteen—a time of darkness during which Fox received his first insights from the Lord and came to the realization that priests were not necessary for a spiritual life—and the development of his own regimen and interpretation of the Bible, laying the basis for the Religious Society of Friends. Anyone interested in Quakers, Christian sects, and the evolution of religious belief will find Fox's autobiography a unique look at an influential religious figure.

Journalism and the Muslim Narrative: Power, Resistance and Change (Routledge Research in Journalism)

by Nadia Haq

Journalism and the Muslim Narrative presents an empirical analysis of how modern-day journalism practices contribute to the negative bias against Muslims in Britain, to provide an in-depth investigation of how we can better re-conceptualise journalism for our increasingly multicultural societies. For more than 20 years, media activists and academic scholars have highlighted a bias in British newspapers where Muslims are portrayed as the problematic ‘Other’ of British society. This book draws on the representation of Muslims to contribute a critical, empirical analysis of contemporary journalistic practices in multicultural societies. This includes a deeper insight into media audiences and the public, journalism norms and values such as objectivity, balance and freedom of speech, the wider implications of the increasing digitalisation of the media and the tensions between media structures and journalistic agency. As competition with social media heightens pressures on journalists to produce even more sensationalist and polarising coverage about Muslims, this book further offers a critical evaluation of how journalism needs to be re-imagined to realise its civic role in our progressively digitalised and diverse societies. Drawing on the first-hand accounts of newspaper journalists and editors, the author challenges our understanding of journalism and the role that journalists play in uniting, rather than dividing, our diverse societies. This book builds a critical appraisal of academic perspectives from journalism, media and cultural studies, sociology, postcolonial theory and the study of race and religion, and how journalism practices can either perpetuate or challenge discriminatory and divisive narratives about Britain’s Muslim communities. It will be of value to journalism practitioners as well as academics studying journalism, media and communications, cultural studies and race and ethnicity studies. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Journey

by Angela Hunt

His younger brother will be greater than he. . . With those words, Menashe's dreams collapse. As Yosef's eldest son, his position had seemed secure. But now Efrayim--bold, charming Efrayim, who's everything Menashe is not --is taking his place. With their people. With the pharaoh. With Jendayi, the slave Menashe loves. Efrayim, meanwhile, sees his dreams confirmed. Surely it's his destiny to unite the Egyptians and Hebrews. To marry a princess and achieve splendor surpassing that of his brother. Then Menashe's dreams take a dangerous twist as he becomes obsessed with returning the Hebrews to their homeland. If he succeeds, he'll restore their heritage. If he fails. . . he could destroy them all.

Journey Through Ten Thousand Veils

by Maryam Kabeer Faye

A Journey Through Ten Thousand Veils is an in-depth account of the journey of the soul on the path of return to its Lord. Sheikha Maryam Kabeer was guided on her journey of profound transformation and illumination to meet and be guided by Awakened Spiritual Masters on the path of awakening, leading to the realization of the deep truth that all lives are interconnected by the Grace and in the Presence of the One Exalted Creator of them all. Born into a liberal Jewish family in Hollywood, she was guided to Berkeley, and then to Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and monasteries in Europe, ultimately to embrace Islam in Hebron (El Khalil), near Jerusalem. In following the example of Abraham (a.s.), Father of all the monotheistic religions, and while praying in the blessed Masjid al Aqsa, in which the spirits of all the Prophets (as) are assembled in eternal prayer and unity, in her spiritual practice, she was guided to penetrate the myth that there must be conflict between the descendants of the great servant of God, who was sent by the Creator, as were all the Prophets (as) to guide humanity to His Path of Truth. This book is a significant and revealing social and spiritual commentary, which dispels, as well, many other myths and stereotypes, such as the proposition that women are oppressed in Islam. On the contrary, it is by entering into the heart of Islam, guided by the Divine Light transmitted through great Spiritual Masters, that she was liberated, elevated, and blessed to serve the Creator and His creation with ever deeper sincerity and illumined faith.Travel with her on her epic journey in order to gain the knowledge that may also set you free.

Journey To The Common Good

by Walter Brueggemann

Respected author and theologian Walter Brueggemann turns his discerning eye to the most critical yet basic needs of a world adapting to a new era, an era defined in large part by America's efforts to rebuild from an age of terror even as it navigates its way through an economic collapse. Yet in spite of these great challenges, Brueggemann calls us to journey together to the common good through neighborliness, covenanting, and reconstruction. Such a concept may seem overwhelming, but writing with his usual theological acumen and social awareness Brueggemann distills this challenge to its most basic issues: where is the church going? What is its role in contemporary society? What lessons does it have to offer a world enmeshed in such turbulent times? The answer is the same answer God gave to the Israelites thousands of years ago: love your neighbor and work for the common good. Brueggemann considers biblical texts as examples of the journey now required of the faithful if they wish to move from isolation and distrust to a practice of neighborliness, as an invitation to a radical choice for life or for death, and as a reliable script for overcoming contemporary problems of loss and restoration in a failed urban economy.

Journey Without Goal: The Tantric Wisdom of the Buddha

by Chogyam Trungpa

Based on the author's talks at Naropa University, this volume introduces the reader to the principles of tantra, based on the practice of meditation, which leads to the discovery of egolessness. Trungpa Rinpoche provides a direct and experiential picture of the tantric world, explaining the importance of self-existing energy, the mandala principle, the difference between Buddhist and Hindu tantra--stressing the nontheistic foundation of Buddhism. The role of the teacher and the meaning of tantric transmission are also presented. Written for the student of Buddhism rather than the scholar, Journey without Goal demystifies the vajrayana and at the same time affirms the power and sacredness of its ancient teaching.

Journey from the Land of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran

by Roya Hakakian

"We stormed every classroom, inscribed our slogans on the blackboard . . . Never had mayhem brought more peace. All our lives we had been taught the virtues of behaving, and now we were discovering the importance of misbehaving. Too much fear had tainted our days. Too many afternoons had passed in silence, listening to a fanatic's diatribes. We were rebelling because we were not evil, we had not sinned, and we knew nothing of the apocalypse. . . . This was 1979, the year that showed us we could make our own destinies. We were rebelling because rebelling was all we could do to quell the rage in our teenage veins. Together as girls we found the courage we had been told was not in us." In Journey from the Land of No Roya Hakakian recalls her childhood and adolescence in pre-revolutionary Iran with candor and verve. The result is a beautifully written coming-of-age story about one deeply intelligent and perceptive girl's attempt to find an authentic voice of her own at a time of cultural closing and repression. Remarkably, she manages to re-create a time and place dominated by religious fanaticism, violence, and fear with an open heart and often with great humor. Hakakian was twelve years old in 1979 when the revolution swept through Tehran. The daughter of an esteemed poet, she grew up in a household that hummed with intellectual life. Family gatherings were punctuated by witty, satirical exchanges and spontaneous recitations of poetry. But the Hakakians were also part of the very small Jewish population in Iran who witnessed the iron fist of the Islamic fundamentalists increasingly tightening its grip. It is with the innocent confusion of youth that Roya describes her discovery of a swastika--"a plus sign gone awry, a dark reptile with four hungry claws"--painted on the wall near her home. As a schoolgirl she watched as friends accused of reading blasphemous books were escorted from class by Islamic Society guards, never to return. Only much later did Roya learn that she was spared a similar fate because her teacher admired her writing. Hakakian relates in the most poignant, and at times painful, ways what life was like for women after the country fell into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists who had declared an insidious war against them, but we see it all through the eyes of a strong, youthful optimist who somehow came up in the world believing that she was different, knowing she was special. At her loneliest, Roya discovers the consolations of writing while sitting on the rooftop of her house late at night. There, "pen in hand, I led my own chorus of words, with a melody of my own making." And she discovers the craft that would ultimately enable her to find her own voice and become her own person. A wonderfully evocative story, Journey from the Land of No reveals an Iran most readers have not encountered and marks the debut of a stunning new talent.

Journey in the Wilderness: New Life for Mainline Churches

by Gil Rendle

The last forty years have seen transitions in mainline churches that feel, for many, like a journey into the wilderness. Yet God is calling us in this moment, not to grieve over the changes we have experienced but to hear the call to a new mission, and a new faithfulness. In Journey in the Wilderness, Gil Rendle draws on decades as a pastor and church consultant to point a way into a hopeful future. The key to embracing the wilderness is to learn new skills in leading change, to reach beyond a position of privilege and power to become churches that serve God’s hurting people.

Journey into America: The Challenge of Islam

by Akbar Ahmed

Following up on his 2007 work, Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization, in which he traveled the Islamic world with a team of researchers to investigate the diversity of Muslim societies abroad, Ahmed (Islamic studies, American U. in Washington, D. C.) here reports on a similar project in which he traveled through Muslim communities across the United States administering questionnaires and conducting interviews in order to explore social patterns and attitudes of American Muslims in the context of the broader history of American racial and religious relations. He begins with an ethnographic discussion of American identity in general before turning to an examination of the ethnography of Islam in America, within which he offers separate discussions of African American Muslims, Muslim immigrants, and white and Latino Muslim converts. He also includes chapters comparing the American experiences of Muslims to that of Jews and Mormons. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
