Lifting Hearts to the Lord: Worship with John Calvin in Sixteenth-Century Geneva (The Church at Worship)
by Karin MaagThe Church at Worship is a series of documentary case studies of specific worshiping communities from around the world and throughout Christian history — case studies that can inform and enrich worship practices today. In Lifting Hearts to the Lord Karin Maag brings together a wealth of primary sources to examine worship as it was taught and practiced in John Calvin’s Geneva. Enhanced with Maag’s introductions and numerous marginal notes, this volume covers the period from 1541 to 1564, capturing both Calvin’s signal contribution to Reformation worship and the voices of ordinary Genevans as they navigated — and fought about — changes in their worship. Some of the primary materials included here: · Selections from John Calvin’s Scripture commentaries and sermons dealing with worship · Pages from the Genevan Psalter and service book · Historical maps and illustrations of Geneva and its churches · Genevan city council edicts and ordinances on worship · Excerpts from letters, eyewitness accounts of Reformation worship in Geneva, and consistory records

Lifting as They Climb: Black Women Buddhists and Collective Liberation
by Toni Pressley-SanonThe lives and writings of six leading Black Buddhist women—Jan Willis, bell hooks, Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, angel Kyodo williams, Spring Washam, and Faith Adiele—reveal new expressions of Buddhism rooted in ancestry, love, and collective liberation.Lifting as They Climb is a love letter of freedom and self-expression from six Black women Buddhist teachers, conveyed through the voice of author Toni Pressley-Sanon, one of the innumerable people who have benefitted from their wisdom. She explores their remarkable lives and undertakes deep readings of their work, weaving them into the broader tapestry of the African diaspora and the historical struggle for Black liberation. Black women in the U.S. have adapted Buddhist practice to meet challenges ranging from the injustices of the Jim Crow South to sexual violence, social discrimination, and bias within their Buddhist communities. Using their voices through the practice of memoir and other forms of writing, they have not only realized their own liberation but carried forward the Black tradition of leading others on the path toward collective awakening.

To take that first giant, collective step, trusting that everything would fall into place. The museum is for every single person who desires to learn more about the amazing document that is the Bible. The largest single museum under one roof in Washington D.C., and the first in the world to focus on honoring the Bible, the Museum of the Bible provides guests with an immersive and personalized experience as they see the Bible in a whole new light.

Light Atonement
by AriyanaLight Atonement takes readers on a spiritual journey, one that is as enlightening as it is unusual. Ariyana, the narrator of this journey, describes her transition from life as a wife, mother and successful entrepreneur to a spiritual traveler who develops the capacity to move through alternative universes, to communicate with angels and to heal the sick. More than anything else, she emerges from this journey with knowledge that can provide comfort and guidance for all readers--knowledge that she shares eloquently and movingly. This is a book about an awakening of extraordinary spiritual powers and presences. Ariyana, the author, tells her story chronologically, and initially she seems to be like many other young women trying to find her way in the world. She moves from Japan to the U. S. for college, falls in love, marries, starts a business with her husband and has children. Yet always, she yearns for something more. Ariyana’s willingness to try a range of techniques and eagerness to learn opens her up to the possibility of a world beyond the visible one. A turning point comes in 2010, when she meets a California psychic named Kyle who possesses talents far beyond those of other psychics. It is Kyle who tells her that she was "put on this earth to do something big”-a message that stuns her but awakens in her the sense of a larger life purpose. Ariyana reveals this purpose toward the end of the book. She comes to understand that she has been chosen to bring a message of hope and salvation to mankind. These and other revelations emerge organically from Ariyana’s journey-a journey that is akin to a ride on a spiritual rollercoaster, and Ariyana must go through a grueling gauntlet of physical maladies and emotional challenges as she seeks her true calling. Working with a number of new healers, teachers and channelers, Ariyana moves into deeper spiritual realms and develops the ability to channel different light languages. With Kyle as her translator, she begins to receive messages that can only be coming from dimensions beyond the earth. She also discovers that she possesses healing talents, and is able to use her crystals to help a number of people recover from serious medical problems. And then Ariyana meets her angels-who these angels are and the role they will play in Ariyana’s life unfolds over the last third of the book. She learns to summon and learn from them. During this time, she begins to "program crystals” for other people to help them reach their highest potential. All this effort, though, begins to take its toll on Ariyana, and she finds herself falling ill and feeling drained. Ariyana perseveres, but there are distractions-the entrepreneurial business with which she has become re-involved, her children, her ex-husband and boyfriend. And then almost magically, things become clearer. She has an epiphany of what her purpose is and how to achieve it. And she discovers a shocking truth about her "real” family that helps her make startling sense of many of the messages she’s received from her angels and through her channeling.
Light Comes Through: Buddhist Teachings on Awakening to Our Natural Intelligence
by Dzigar KongtrulBuddhahood, says Dzigar Kongtrül, is nothing but an unobstructed experience of the nature of mind, boundlessly spacious and limitlessly compassionate. The trick is that in order to see the mind accurately, we must use the particular aspect of mind he calls natural intelligence. Natural intelligence enables us to discriminate between what helps or hinders us. But most of all, it's the part of us that searches for happiness and meaning. In Light Comes Through, he shows us how to skillfully use our wish for happiness as a tool in awakening to the joyous wisdom of mind.

Light Through the Crack
by Sue MostellerA deeply moving and engaging work of Christian spirituality in the tradition of Henri Nouwen, written by his close friend and literary executrix.Sue Mosteller has had a rich life as a spiritual adventurer and as a member and leader of L'Arche Community, where she first met the great spiritual writer Henri Nouwen. In Light Through the Crack, she tells her own story and the stories of the people she has known throughout her life. She writes about her family and her upbringing; the fifty years she has spent with the Sisters of St. Joseph; her thirty years of involvement with L'Arche Daybreak Community, where people with disabilities and those who assist them create a home together; and her close, twenty-year friendship with Nouwen. With grace and humor she explores the relationships she has formed and the difficulties that go with them. Through her varied experiences, she has learned that it is impossible to live with people over the long term and hide your flaws and vulnerabilities. Leonard Cohen once wrote in a song: "There is a crack in everything/That's how the light gets in." Combining revealing memoir and the inspirational stories of others, Mosteller brings to life the meaning of that resonant phrase and illuminates why human weaknesses, the "cracks" in our personalities, are actually the greatest sources of light for the world.
Light Through the Crack: The Meaning of Life in the Face of Adversity
by Avi SagiAn epidemic such as COVID-19 challenges life’s very order and meaning, interferes in our relations with others, and breaks apart our routine. It raises many questions in the realms of ethics, politics, theology, psychology, and beyond. Perhaps more than anything else, it prompts us to ponder: what does this encounter with widespread anguish and distress imply about the human self-perception as sovereign rulers of Earthly life?In this book, renowned thinker Avi Sagi explores the existential matters brought to the philosophical fore by the pandemic. He shows how we, when thrown into the terror of a crisis, carry the traditions, values, ideals, hopes, failures, and habits that constitute our lives, all shaping the way we grapple with questions seemingly resolved. We may then find that the crack that opens up at times of sorrow can also be a moment of discovery. Sagi analyzes various ways of confronting the crack now at the heart of our existence. What emerges is a clear normative statement: We are not only what we were but also what we can be, and we can create a world of meaning by standing together with others.

Light Within Us
by Albert SchweitzerThe selections contained in this volume were made by Richard Kik. The original edition Vom Licht in uns was published by Verlag J. F. Steinkopf, Stuhgart. It contains sayings of things highly spiritual nature as well as a description of the life of Richard Kik. One such selection is The beginning of all spiritual life is fearless belief in truth and its open confession. Albert Schweitzer (14 January 1875 - 4 September 1965) was a German-French theologian, musician, philosopher, and physician. He was born in Kaysersberg in the province of Elsass-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine), at the time in the German Empire. Schweitzer challenged both the secular view of Jesus as depicted by historical-critical methodology current at his time in certain academic circles, as well the traditional Christian view, depicting a Jesus Christ who expected and predicted the imminent end of the world. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his philosophy of Reverence for Life expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarn, now in Gabon, west central Africa (then French Equatorial Africa). As a music scholar and organist, he studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and influenced the Organ reform movement (Orgelbewegung). Schweitzer's passionate quest was to discover a universal ethical philosophy, anchored in a universal reality, and make it directly available to all of humanity. This is reflected in some of his sayings, such as: Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace. I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.
