Acts 13-28 MacArthur New Testament Commentary (MacArthur New Testament Commentary Series)

by John MacArthur

These study guides, part of a set from noted Bible scholar, John MacArthur, take readers on a journey through biblical texts to discover what lies beneath the surface, focusing on meaning and context, and then reflecting on the explored passage or concept. With probing questions that guide the reader toward application, The MacArthur Bible Studies are invaluable tools for Bible students of all ages. The book of Acts is the first volume of church history. It records the story of the church from its explosive beginning on the Day of Pentecost to the imprisonment at Rome of its greatest missionary. During those three decades, the church expanded from a small group of Jewish believers gathered in Jerusalem to embrace thousands in dozens of congregations throughout the Roman world. Acts describes how the Spirit of God superintended, controlled, and empowered the expansion of the church. Although a work of history, not theology, Acts nevertheless emphasizes the doctrinal truths concerning salvation, the work and person of the Holy Spirit, and other theological issues. Join John MacArthur as he searches the pages of the book of Acts to uncover the intricacies of God's Word spoken to His people.

Acts 29: The Ministry of Peter Hakim Hosein, Apostle to the Caribbean

by W. Douglas Cowie

A MODERN-DAY PAULMiracles and Salvation in the Islands What would it be like if the Book of Acts wasn't finished? It would be something like the dynamic life and ministry of Peter Hakim Hosein, who touched the Caribbean and elsewhere in the Western World with the power of the Holy Spirit. During his time of grief over the loss of a three year old son, Hosein's father promised the God he himself had never met personally, that he would dedicate his next born son to His full time service. Undeterred by death threats, he traveled from village to village to heal the sick, cast out demons, and share the good news with power. Like a modern-day apostle Peter or Paul, he established churches in Trinidad and Tobago, and throughout the surrounding islands.Acts 29: The Ministry of Peter Hakim Hosein, Apostle to the Caribbean records the largely unknown ministry of a remarkable but humble man with simple faith in a powerful God. Drawn together from interviews with Hosein himself, and conversations with the family and fellow workers, this account will inspire you to believe God for the miraculous today--and in your own world.

Acts Verse by Verse (Osborne New Testament Commentaries)

by Grant R. Osborne

The events in the book of Acts changed our world forever. Following his account of Jesus' life and ministry in his Gospel, Luke recounts the formation of the early church in Acts. And while the apostles appear to be at the center of this narrative, all of their work is done through the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. In every chapter in Acts, we see Spirit-empowered apostles sharing the gospel reality of the risen Christ to the ends of the earth. In Acts Verse by Verse, Grant Osborne guides readers through these crucial events in history. He shows us that by sending his Holy Spirit, the risen and exalted Lord was acting through the apostles--and through us today--to transform human history. Osborne skillfully explains the significance of these events and shows us how we can draw inspiration from them today.

Acts and Letters of the Apostles

by Richmond A. Lattimore

Richmond Lattimore, one of the most distinguished living translators of Greek, has in this book completed his rendering of the New Testament in fresh and accurate English for the modern reader. The publication of his translation of The Four Gospels and the Revelation in 1979 was hailed by the New York Times Book Review as "an achievement that places us more deeply in Lattimore's debt than any other in a long diligent career."The Acts of the Apostles, which he calls "the earliest consecutive story of early Christianity that we have," and the three groups of Letters of the Apostles--those of Saint Paul, the letter to the Hebrews, and the General Letters--are now made available to complete the New Testament in his translation. His aim again has been to provide a simple, literal rendering in which the syntax and order of the Greek dictate the character of the English style.Lattimore, as an authority on the Greek language in which these texts have come down to us, and as a writer without pretensions as a biblical scholar, allows the words of the apostles and earliest disciples to speak for themselves with accuracy and fidelity to the Greek. The book's design follows the attractive and readable format of The Four Gospels, and avoids the usual apparatus of biblical texts.

Acts of Belonging in Modern Societies: Sexuality, Immigration, Citizenship (Citizenship, Gender and Diversity)

by Ilgın Yörükoğlu

This book examines the ways in which the need to belong manifests itself in the post 9/11 world, from a cross-disciplinary perspective. Using queer Turkish women in Berlin as its subjects, the book shows how individuals with seemingly contradictory belongings develop strategies of emotional survival in the face of conflict, which Yorukoglu terms “acts of belonging”. It studies the impact of populist discourses on minorities, exploring concepts such as security, integration, sexual tolerance and cohesion within a causal relationship. Questioning this assumed relationship, the book proposes an alternative approach to study belonging. Acts Of Belonging in Modern Societies supports the empirical research behind the argument that cohesion is not a "sine qua non" of belonging. These acts allow the individual to claim belonging in spite of possible differences. The book provides evocative case studies to reveal the affective, dynamic, complex nature of human connectedness.

Acts of Conscience: Christian Nonviolence and Modern American Democracy (Columbia Studies in Contemporary American History)

by Joseph Kip Kosek

In response to the massive bloodshed that defined the twentieth century, American religious radicals developed a modern form of nonviolent protest, one that combined Christian principles with new uses of mass media. Greatly influenced by the ideas of Mohandas Gandhi, these "acts of conscience" included sit-ins, boycotts, labor strikes, and conscientious objection to war. Beginning with World War I and ending with the ascendance of Martin Luther King Jr., Joseph Kip Kosek traces the impact of A. J. Muste, Richard Gregg, and other radical Christian pacifists on American democratic theory and practice. These dissenters found little hope in the secular ideologies of Wilsonian Progressivism, revolutionary Marxism, and Cold War liberalism, all of which embraced organized killing at one time or another. The example of Jesus, they believed, demonstrated the immorality and futility of such violence under any circumstance and for any cause. Yet the theories of Christian nonviolence are anything but fixed. For decades, followers have actively reinterpreted the nonviolent tradition, keeping pace with developments in politics, technology, and culture. Tracing the rise of militant nonviolence across a century of industrial conflict, imperialism, racial terror, and international warfare, Kosek recovers radical Christians' remarkable stance against the use of deadly force, even during World War II and other seemingly just causes. His research sheds new light on an interracial and transnational movement that posed a fundamental, and still relevant, challenge to the American political and religious mainstream.

Acts of Faith

by Rodney Stark Roger Finke

Finally, social scientists have begun to attempt to understand religious behavior rather than to discredit it as irrational, ignorant, or foolish--and Rodney Stark and Roger Finke have played a major role in this new approach. Acknowledging that science cannot assess the supernatural side of religion (and therefore should not claim to do so), Stark and Finke analyze the observable, human side of faith. In clear and engaging prose, the authors combine explicit theorizing with animated discussions as they move from considering the religiousness of individuals to the dynamics of religious groups and then to the religious workings of entire societies as religious groups contend for support. The result is a comprehensive new paradigm for the social-scientific study of religion.

Acts of Faith: Journeys to Sacred India

by Makarand R. Paranjape

An adventure into the heart of spiritual India that could change the way you think and live . . . Acts of Faith: Journeys to Sacred India is a sensitive and enriching exploration of the essential meaning and inner dynamics of sacred India. Through a series of deeply textured narratives of well-known masters, ashrams and sacred sites, it engages with that area of contemporary India where the profane and the sacred intersect, each transforming the other. This unusual pilgrimage shows how the pathway to the Divine is plural and open, rather than closed or restricted. While there are many travel books on India, few combine an inquiry into the meaning of India with actual visits to sacred sites, encounters with contemporary gurus, and reflections on perennial themes like ‘faith’ and ‘love’. Using both textual sources and actual experiences, Acts of Faith tries to define what constitutes the sacred, making for a highly interesting cartography of ‘India of the spirit’.

Acts of Faith: Meditations For People of Color

by Iyanla Vanzant

Beloved Friends, Acts of Faith, more affectionately known as "the purple book," has truly taken on a life of its own. It has crossed gender lines to foster understanding, racial divides to create peace, religious barriers to encourage tolerance, and has become somewhat of a lantern for those seeking a better way of life. I have been told it has saved lives, renewed faith, created vision and healed wounds. Some day it has comforted them. Others say it has enlightened them. It has changed perspectives for some, directions for others and lives for many. I can take no credit for any of this. In fact, I give the credit to those of you who were willingly seeking, open and easy for whatever blessing you received from your interaction with this book. My goal in writing the book was to provide a service. At that time I never imagined how greatly I would be served. The kindness, generosity and love I have received in a response to this book has been, at times, overwhelming. Because we live in a world and during a time when we are untrusting, almost afraid of one another; we can forget how loving and supportive people can be. We also live in an environment where we tend to think of one another as them and us; the haves and the have nots. My experience during both the writing and promotion of Acts of Faith has served as a valuable reminder of how alike we all are. We all cry. We all hurt. We all want to do better. We all learn and we all grow. I have grown tremendously since the publication of Acts of Faith. In both my personal and professional life, I have grown in the realization of just how precious life is and how blessed we are to be alive. I have grown to appreciate the delicate balance between surviving and flourishing. I have grown in the realization of the awesome responsibility one undertakes when they seek to serve. More important, I have grown stronger in my faith and belief that God is happy when His children are happy. You and I are God's precious children. Acts of Faith has brought an incredible amount of happiness into my life. For this, I am grateful. I am happy that so many are searching for the truth about life and about themselves. I am happy that people from all walks of life, all social backgrounds are developing a deeper sense of awareness and connection to the beauty of life and the glory of God. I am grateful that from a very rocky beginning in life, I have been entrusted by the Creator to bring forth a message of truth and healing. I am grateful that healing is available and that many have found the healing that they sought in the pages of this little purple book. People often ask me, "What are your plans for the future? What will you do next?" They are somewhat taken aback by my casual response, "I haven't got a clue!" Acts of Faith has taught me the value of surrender and the wisdom of not getting bogged down in all the details of life. I know that God has a plan for me and for us. I know that when you have pure intent and a loving desire, God will not forsake you. I wanted to show my appreciation to you by offering this gift edition of Acts of Faith as a special way of letting you know how much your love and support has meant to me. Give it to a friend or a loved one, or present it to yourself as a reminder that when you act on faith, you rarely go wrong and you are always blessed. Thank you for blessing me with your love.
