Schlüsselwerke der Emotionssoziologie

by Konstanze Senge Rainer Schützeichel Veronika Zink

by Gert Pickel Christel Gärtner

Dr. Gert Pickel ist Professor für Religions- und Kirchensoziologie am Institut für Praktische Theologie der Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Leipzig.

Schlüsselwerke der Wirtschaftssoziologie (Wirtschaft + Gesellschaft)

by Klaus Kraemer Florian Brugger

Was sind ökonomische Werte?

by Stefan Lautenbacher Jonathan Weider Mia-Maria Fischer Thomas Wabel

Schoenberg and Redemption

by Julie Brown

Schoenberg and Redemption presents a new way of understanding Schoenberg's step into atonality in 1908. Reconsidering his threshold and early atonal works, as well as his theoretical writings and a range of previously unexplored archival documents, Julie Brown argues that Schoenberg's revolutionary step was in part a response to Wagner's negative charges concerning the Jewish influence on German music. In 1898 and especially 1908 Schoenberg's Jewish identity came into confrontation with his commitment to Wagnerian modernism to provide an impetus to his radical innovations. While acknowledging the broader turn-of-the-century Viennese context, Brown draws special attention to continuities between Schoenberg's work and that of Viennese moral philosopher Otto Weininger, himself an ideological Wagnerian. She also considers the afterlife of the composer's ideological position when, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the concept of redeeming German culture of its Jewish elements took a very different turn.

Scholarly Community at the Early University of Paris

by Spencer E. Young

This book explores the ways in which theologians at the early University of Paris promoted the development of this new centre of education into a prominent institution within late medieval society. Drawing upon a range of evidence, including many theological texts available only in manuscripts, Spencer Young uncovers a vibrant intellectual community engaged in debates on such issues as the viability of Aristotle's natural philosophy for Christian theology, the implications of the popular framework of the seven deadly sins for spiritual and academic life, the social and religious obligations of educated masters, and poor relief. Integrating the intellectual and institutional histories of the Faculty of Theology, Young demonstrates the historical significance of these discussions for both the university and the thirteenth-century church. He also reveals the critical role played by many of the early university's lesser-known members in one of the most transformative periods in the history of higher education.

Scholastic Metaphysics in Late Ming China: Giulio Aleni's "The True Source of the Myriad Things" (Christianity in Modern China)

by Paul K. Hosle Biyun Dai

This book provides the first complete English translation of Giulio Aleni’s Wanwu Zhenyuan 萬物真原 (‘The True Source of the Myriad Things’). Aleni is one of the most important Jesuit missionaries to China, as is evidenced by the fact that he was reverentially called already during his lifetime ‘Confucius from the West’. Aleni’s work, first published in 1628, offers precious insight into the ways in which he tried to communicate Western philosophical notions to Confucian literati, arguing that only God can be the ultimate source of the world. In our introduction, we situate this work within Aleni’s life and analyze the argument of the text. We discuss the Scholastic framework that Aleni uses in his attempt to prove God’s existence, as well as his arguments against competing positions from native Chinese philosophical traditions, particularly Neo-Confucianism. We also emphasize the importance that Aleni gives to reason as the best possible means of intercultural communication. Moreover, we have provided numerous annotations to the translation that identify references, provide historical and philosophical contextualization, and otherwise aid in the appreciation and elucidation of the work. This book provides an essential step to render this significant text more accessible to a wider readership interested in Jesuit missionary history and indeed more broadly in cross-cultural dialogue, and it will also serve as a vital tool for future scholarly research on Aleni’s oeuvre.

Schooling Indifference: Reimagining RE in multi-cultural and gendered spaces (Gender, Theology and Spirituality)

by Alison Jasper John I'Anson

This book is concerned with re-imagining Religious Education (RE) as this is practiced in schools, colleges and universities throughout the UK and in a wide variety of international educational contexts. On the basis of a critical analysis of current theory and practice in RE the authors argue that this educational framing is no longer plausible in the light of new theoretical developments within the academy. A new educational approach to RE is outlined that challenges students to think and practice differently. This includes a ‘becoming ethnographer’ approach that can acknowledge socio-material relations and engage the broader literacies necessary for such study. Part One examines how RE has been constructed as a discipline in historical and spatial terms that abstract its study from material concerns. Part Two offers some new starting points: Spinoza, Foucault and feminist theory that differently foreground context and relationality, and 'Islam' read as a discursive, located tradition rather than as 'world view'. Finally, Part Three proposes a new trajectory for research and practice in RE, with the aim of re-engaging schools, colleges and universities in a dialogue that promotes thinking and practice that – as educational - is continually in touch with the need to be critical, open-ended and ethically justifiable.

Schooling Islam: The Culture and Politics of Modern Muslim Education (Princeton Studies in Muslim Politics #37)

by Robert W. Hefner and Muhammad Qasim Zaman

Since the Taliban seized Kabul in 1996, the public has grappled with the relationship between Islamic education and radical Islam. Media reports tend to paint madrasas--religious schools dedicated to Islamic learning--as medieval institutions opposed to all that is Western and as breeding grounds for terrorists. Others have claimed that without reforms, Islam and the West are doomed to a clash of civilizations. Robert Hefner and Muhammad Qasim Zaman bring together eleven internationally renowned scholars to examine the varieties of modern Muslim education and their implications for national and global politics. The contributors provide new insights into Muslim culture and politics in countries as different as Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. They demonstrate that Islamic education is neither timelessly traditional nor medieval, but rather complex, evolving, and diverse in its institutions and practices. They reveal that a struggle for hearts and minds in Muslim lands started long before the Western media discovered madrasas, and that Islamic schools remain on its front line. Schooling Islam is the most comprehensive work available in any language on madrasas and Islamic education.

Schools in Crisis: They Need Your Help (Whether You Have Kids or Not)

Schools of Qur'anic Exegesis: Genesis and Development (Culture and Civilization in the Middle East)

by Hussein Abdul-Raof

Qur’anic exegesis has become the battleground of political Islam and theological conflict among various Muslim schools of thought. Using comparative and contrastive methodology, examples from the Qur'an are investigated in the light of various theological views to delineate the birth, development and growth of Qur'anic exegesis. The political status quo, in the past and at present, has impinged upon Qur’anic exegesis more than on any other discipline in Islamic studies. This book illustrates the dichotomy between mainstream and non-mainstream Islam, showing how Qur’anic exegesis reflects the subtle dogmatic differences and political cleavages in Islamic thought. Chapters explore in depth the intrusive views of the compilers of early exegesis manuscripts, the scepticism among Western scholars about the authenticity of early Muslim works of exegesis and of prophetic tradition, and the role of exegesis as a tool to reaffirm the Qur’an as a canon. Written to appeal to those with comparative exegetical interests as well as those focused on Islamic studies in general, this book will be an important reference for research students, scholars, and students of Islamic Studies, Theology, Religious studies and Middle Eastern Studies.

Schopenhauer, Religion and Morality: The Humble Path to Ethics (Ashgate New Critical Thinking in Philosophy)

by Gerard Mannion

This work challenges the textbook assessment of Schopenhauer as militant atheist and absolute pessimist. In examining Schopenhauer's grappling with religion, theology and Kant's moral philosophy, Mannion suggests we can actually discern a 'religious' humility in method in Schopenhauer's work, seen most clearly in his ethics of compassion and his doctrine of salvation. Given Schopenhauer’s opinion of religion as the ’metaphysics of the people’, his utilisation of and affinity with many religious ideas and doctrines, and the culmination of his philosophy in a doctrine of salvation that ends in the ’mystical’, Mannion suggests that Schopenhauer’s philosophy is an explanatory hypothesis which functionally resembles religious belief systems in many ways. Mannion further argues that Schopenhauer cannot claim to have gone any further than such religious systems in discerning the 'true' nature of ultimate reality, for he admits that they also end in the ’mystical’, beyond which we must remain silent. Indeed, Schopenhauer offers an interpretation, as opposed to outright rejection of religion and his system gains the coherence that it does through being parasitic upon religious thought itself. Given current debates between theologians and philosophers in relation to 'postmodernity' and 'postmodern thought', this book illustrates that Schopenhauer should be a key figure in such debates.

Schriften zur Wirtschafts- und Kultursoziologie: Herausgegeben und eingeleitet von Amalia Barboza und Klaus Lichtblau (Klassiker der Sozialwissenschaften)

by Karl Mannheim

by Kevin Coval

Schtick is a tale of Jewish assimilation and its discontents: a sweeping exposition on Jewish American culture in all its bawdy, contradictory, inventive glory. Exploring-in his own family and in culture and politics at large-how Jews have shed their minority status in the United States, poet Kevin Coval shows us a people's transformation out of diaspora, landing on both sides of the color line.

Schweitzer's Psychoanalysis of Jesus Christ: & Other Essays in Christian Psychotherapy

by John Warwick Montgomery

John Warwick Montgomery beautifully highlights how modern psychiatric treatment has lost its mind! Contemporary forms of psychotherapy are, soulless— psychological and spiritual problems require a transcendent solution, as Montgomery nicely documents. No citation of Freud, Jung, or Albert Schweitzer in his flawed diagnosis of Jesus will never be the same as quoting Holy Scripture. Dr. Montgomery' s latest book is a fresh movement of the Spirit of God to a lost and dying world without Christ. The answer: Put Christianity back into the discussion of what is genuine treatment, and Montgomery' s newest bookwonderfully points us in that direction.

by Araththy Logeswaran
