Historia prodigiosa

Como en otros del autor, aparecen el amor y el equívoco de la mano y contiene quizás los mejores cuentos de Bioy Casares. A tono con el cosmopolitismo de sus temas, este libro, tal vez el más perfecto del Bioy cuentista, se publicó originalmente en México en 1956 e incluye seis relatos escritos entre 1949 y 1955 que podrían formar parte de cualquier antología. Más que el amor, los cauces imprevisibles que se derivan de la atracción; más que el fantástico, los pliegues inescrutables del destino. Esos son algunos de los puntos cardinales de estas historias que oscilan entre la brevedad hipnótica de «Las vísperas de Fausto» y el desarrollo exhaustivo del primer relato que, como suele suceder en su obra cuentística, es el que le da al libro tanto el título como el ímpetu. En «Historia prodigiosa» el narrador, menos deslumbrado por las ideas de Rolando de Lancker que por las piernas de su discípula Olivia, es testigo de un desenlace que, en más de un aspecto, recuerda al de El sueño de los héroes, novela imbatible que Adolfo Bioy Casares escribió en la misma época de estos cuentos.
