The Fifth Sorceress (Chronicles of Blood and Stone #1)
by Robert NewcombNot since Terry Goodkind unsheathed the Sword of Truth has there been such an epic tale of heroism and magic that so captures the imagination as this monumental new work by a master storyteller. In The Fifth Sorceress, Robert Newcomb conjures a time and place wrought with exquisite detail, characters vividly drawn and deeply felt, and a history rich in glory and horror, splendor and secrets. . . ."We gave them a chance once, long ago. . . . We offered to share power equally, and in peace. But they refused and chose war. With them it was all or nothing. Wizard against Sorceress. Male against female. Light against dark."It is more than three centuries since the ravages of a devastating war nearly tore apart the kingdom of Eutracia. In its wake, those who masterminded the bloodshed--a quartet of powerful, conquest-hungry Sorceresses--were sentenced to exile, with return all but impossible and death all but inevitable. Now a land of peace and plenty, protected and guided by a council of immortal wizards, Eutracia is about to crown a new king. And as the coronation approaches, the spirit of celebration fills every heart. Except one.Prince Tristan is a reluctant monarch-to-be. Though born with the "endowed" blood that will give him the power to master magic, and destined by tradition to succeed his father as ruler, he is a rebel soul. And when he discovers the ancient, hidden caves where strange red waters flow--possessed of their own mysterious magic--it only makes him yearn all the more to escape his future of duty . . . and succumb to the stirrings of enchantment within him.But more than tradition compels Tristan to ascend the throne. The very existence of Eutracia depends upon it. For after these long centuries of peace, dreadful omens have begun to appear, heralding something too unspeakable to ponder. And if indeed the old evil has returned, hungry to wreak vengeance, Tristan's role in an ages-old prophecy must be fulfilled--or the cost to his kingdom and his people will be beyond imagination. It will be a battle like none ever known, against an enemy whose thirst for blood and domination is depthless and unyielding. And for Tristan, it will be the ultimate challenge: facing an adversary whose greatest weapon is the person he loves most--transformed into the instrument of his annihilation . . . and the catalyst that will doom Eutracia forever to darkness. From the Hardcover edition.
The Fifth Wall: A Novel
by Rachel Nagelberg“Art, grief, and technology churn in this excellent and raw novel about a conceptual artist’s recovery from witnessing her mother’s suicide.” —Publishers WeeklyIn this debut novel, conceptual artist Sheila B. Ackerman heeds a mysterious urge to return to her estranged family home and arrives at the exact moment of her mother’s suicide. In an attempt to cope with and understand her own self-destructive tendencies, Sheila plants a camera on the lawn outside the house to film 24/7 while workers deconstruct the physical object that encases so many of her memories. Meanwhile, as she begins to experience frequent blackouts, she finds herself hunting a robot drone through the San Francisco MOMA with a baseball bat, part of a provocative, technological show, The Last Art, and resuming a violent affair with her college professor. With a backdrop of post-9/11 San Francisco, Sheila navigates the social-media-obsessed, draught-ridden landscape of her life, exploring the frail line between the human impulse to control everything that takes place around us and the futility of excessive effort to do so. Combining the emotional depth of Eileen Myles with a plot worthy of a David Lynch film, this readable, literary, and thought-provoking work is for anyone who questions the status quo.Praise for The Fifth Wall“Through her vivid depiction of Sheila’s emotional tailspin, Nagelberg’s novel profoundly explores the way we live with technology and how it informs our understanding of reality.” —Publishers Weekly“A close artistic cousin to Joni Murphy’s Double Teenage and Natasha Stagg’s Surveys. . . . Nagelberg’s engrossing narration is littered with stunning perception: We look into the distance to be able to see what’s right in front of us. She writes without affect, and with unselfconscious acuity. That is, she writes really well.” —Chris Kraus, author of Where Art Belongs

The Final Cut
by Robert Westbrook"THE CUTTERS' CODE 1. IT IS FORBIDDEN FOR A CUTTER TO HAVE A ZOE IMPLANT. 2. IT IS FORBIDDEN FOR A CUTTER TO SELL OR GIVE AWAY ZOE FOOTAGE TO OUTSIDE PARTIES. 3. IT IS FORBIDDEN TO MIX FOOTAGE' FROM TWO DIFFERENT ZOE IMPLANTS OR TO CREATE NEW FOOTAGE WITH THE AID OF COMPUTERS." Alan Hackman is a "cutter" who must follow this code. Zoe implants are placed in the brains of fetuses in the womb and record their memories from birth to death. Cutters shape these recordings into appropriate films to use at "rememories" which have taken the place of memorial services. Of course, all unpleasant or embarrassing memories are to be erased. But it is important that a cutter not have a Zoe implant for obvious reasons. People with implants should be informed of this when they reach adulthood, but sometimes there's a slip.... This book, adapted from the movie starring Robin Williams, discusses the many decisions and uncertainties in Alan's life. While sorting through the memories of strangers, he is plagued by his own clouded memory from his boyhood, a guilty secret that haunts him. Then, while cutting the recording of a wealthy, powerful, and corrupt man, he sees a face from his own past and becomes obsessed with finding the answer that will set him free at last. This novel is fun to read and, if you have watched the film without the aid of a narrator, it clears up some questions. It also is a good jumping-off point for some interesting ethical discussion. Would you want your memories to be recorded and seen by others? How would knowing this was happening affect the way you lived your life? Is it better to remember someone through his own memories or through yours? Enjoy.

The Final Day (John Matherson Series #3)
by William R. ForstchenA major release in the New York Times bestselling One Second After series, set in an alternate America rebuilding after an electromagnetic pulse, this is William R. Forstchen's The Final Day. Since the detonation of nuclear weapons above the United States more than two years ago, the small town of Black Mountain, North Carolina has suffered famine, civil war, and countless deaths. Now, after defeating a new, tyrannical federal government, John Matherson and his community intend to restore their world to what it was before the EMP apocalypse. For the most part, they are succeeding. This period of relative stability doesn’t last long. A new, aggressive government announces that it’s taking over and ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what’s left of the U. S. Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states. John fears he and his town will be targets. General Bob Scales, John’s old commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days, is sent to bring John into line. Will John and his people accept the new, autocratic regime? Or will revolution rip the fledgling nation apart at the seams? Months before publication, William R. Forstchen’s novel One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. This third book in the series immerses readers once more in the story of our nation’s struggle to rebuild itself after an electromagnetic pulse wipes out all electricity and plunges the country into darkness, starvation, and death.
