The Sentimentalists
by Murray LeinsterYou do not always have to go looking for a guardian angel. He may be looking for you--but perhaps for somebody else's benefit! Rhadampsicus and Nodalictha were on their honeymoon, and consequently they were sentimental. To be sure, it would not have been easy for humans to imagine sentiment as existing between them. Humans would hardly associate tenderness with glances cast from sets of sixteen eyes mounted on jointed eye stalks, nor link langorous thrills with a coy mingling of positronic repulsion blasts--even when the emission of positron blasts from beneath one's mantle was one's normal personal mode of locomotion. And when two creatures like Rhadampsicus and Nodalictha stood on what might be roughly described as their heads and twined their eye stalks together, so that they gazed fondly at each other with all sixteen eyes at once, humans would not have thought of it as the equivalent of a loving kiss. Humans would have screamed and run--if they were not paralyzed by the mere sight of such individuals.

The Separation
by Christopher PriestTHE SEPARATION is the story of twin brothers, rowers in the 1936 Olympics (where they met Hess, Hitler's deputy); one joins the RAF, and captains a Wellington; he is shot down after a bombing raid on Hamburg and becomes Churchill's aide-de-camp; his twin brother, a pacifist, works with the Red Cross, rescuing bombing victims in London. But this is not a straightforward story of the Second World War: this is an alternate history: the two brothers - both called J.L. Sawyer - live their lives in alternate versions of reality. In one, the Second World War ends as we imagine it did; in the other, thanks to efforts of an eminent team of negotiators headed by Hess, the war ends in 1941.THE SEPARATION is an emotionally riveting story of how the small man can make a difference; it's a savage critique of Winston Churchill, the man credited as the saviour of Britain and the Western World, and it's a story of how one perceives and shapes the past.
The Separation (Animorphs #32)
by K. A. ApplegateRachel, one of the Earth teenagers dedicated to stopping the parasitic alien race known as the Yeerks, is horrified when she finds herself split into two nearly identical girls.

The Serpent (Atlan Saga, Book #1)
by Jane GaskellThe Serpent is a 320 page fantasy novel written by The British author Jane Gaskell, a former child prodigy writer, and first published in 1963. It is the first of a five book series entitled The Atlan Saga that Jane Gaskell wrote in the sixties and seventies. The order of the series is as follows: The Serpent is the first; The Dragon is the second; Atlan is the third, The City is the fourth; and Some Summer Lands is the fifth. The summary by St. Martin's Press reads as follows: In THE SERPENT, the first installment of Jane Gaskell's ATLAN saga, we meet Cija, an unlikely young princessheroine who has been imprisoned in a tower all her life. She was placed there for safe-keeping since from her birth she carries a curse and is doomed to betray her country. When her mother, the chief goddess of the land releases her, it is only as a hostage to Zerd, the half-man, half-serpent lord of a conquering army. But not before assigning her a secret task. She must seduce Zerd, and once alone with him, kill him: No small order for a maid of 17, who was, until recently, ignorant of the very existence of male humans. Cija goes off with Zerd who is on his way to attempt a greater conquest -the fabled Continent of Atlan. The journey releases upon Cija a series of adventures that are so different and startlingly original from normal fantasy fare that it is all we can do to hang on to our seats. But somehow we do, as Cija is alternately; goddess-princess-heroine of thousands, the mistress of a large bird-creature she rides along on her journey, camp follower, scullion, footman, empress, slave, cook and yes, possibly a great warrior. This thrilling tale is sure to win Jane Gaskell the accolade of being one of the finest writers of fantasy in this generation.
