Who Fears Death (Bride Series)
by Nnedi Okorafor<P><P>International award-winning Nnedi Okorafor enters the world of magical realist literature with a powerful story of genocide in the far future and the woman who reshapes her world. <P><P> In a post-apocalyptic Africa, the world has changed in many ways, yet in one region genocide between tribes still bloodies the land. A woman who has survived the annihilation of her village and a terrible rape by an enemy general wanders into the desert hoping to die. Instead, she gives birth to an angry baby girl with hair and skin the color of sand. Gripped by the certainty that her daughter is different--special--she names her Onyesonwu, which means "Who fears death?" in an ancient language. It doesn't take long for Onye to understand that she is physically and socially marked by the circumstances of her violent conception. <P>She is Ewu--a child of rape who is expected to live a life of violence, a half-breed rejected by both tribes. But Onye is not the average Ewu. Even as a child, she manifests the beginnings of a remarkable and unique magic. As she grows, so do her abilities, and during an inadvertent visit to the spirit realm she learns something terrifying: Someone powerful is trying to kill her. <P> Desperate to elude her would-be murderer and to understand her own nature, she embarks on a journey in which she grapples with nature, tradition, history, true love, and the spiritual mysteries of her culture, and ultimately teaches her why she was given the name she bears: Who Fears Death.
Who Fears The Devil?
by Manly Wade WellmanThere's a traveling man the Carolina mountain folk call Silver John for the silver strings strung on his guitar. In his wanderings John encounters a parade of benighted forest creatures, mountain spirits, and shapeless horrors from the void of history with only his enduring spirit, playful wit, and the magic of his guitar to preserve him. Manly Wade Wellman's Silver John is one of the most beloved figures in fantasy, a true American folk hero of the literary age. For the first time the Planet Stories edition of Who Fears the Devil? collects all of John's adventures published throughout Wellman's life, including two stories about John before he got his silver-stringed guitar that have never previously appeared in a Silver John collection. Lost, out of print, or buried in expensive hardcover editions, the seminal, unforgettable tales of Who Fears the Devil? stand ready for a new generation ready to continue the folk tradition of Silver John!-Print ed."This is the real thing--a book of haunting fantasies with their roots going down deep into the American folk tradition. Manly Wade Wellman not only wrote the stuff, he lived it--exploring the Ozark storytelling traditions at first hand for many years, and shaping the tales he heard into unforgettable fiction."--Robert Silverberg, author of Lord Valentine's Castle"From pulp magazines to Arkham House to "The Twilight Zone," Manly Wade Wellman is a legend--and one of the finest regional fantasists of his day. Having all these tales in one place is both fitting tribute and pure delight!"--Greg Bear, author of Darwin's Radio"A superb writer at his best, and at his best, I think, when writing Silver John."--Michael Moorcock"Just as J. R. R. Tolkien brilliantly created a modem British myth cycle, so did Manly Wade Wellman give to us an imaginary world of purely American fact, fantasy, and song...These stories are chilling and enchanting, magical and down-to-earth, full of wonder and humanity. They are fun. They are like nothing you've ever read before." Karl Edward Wagner, creator of Kane"One of science fiction's few authentic, legitimate artists...entertaining, familiar in a racial-memory sort of way, and educational, [but] also comforting and uplifting...stories that somehow feel exactly right. There are some brilliant and evocative stories waiting up ahead for you."--Mike Resnick, author of Stalking the Dragon"...these stories read as if John is sitting by the potbellied stove in the general store, talking to the good 'ol boys, maybe once in a while pausing to dip into the cracker or pickle barrel...Wellman is a writer as good as he is prolific, and his output is so varied that anyone interested in the fiction of the supernatural is sure to find something enjoyable."--The Reader's Guide to Fantasy"Wellman's stories are not only first-rate fantasies and marvelously entertaining, they have a truly unique warmth to them."--Gahan Wilson for Realms of Fantasy
Who Goes Here?
by Bob ShawHalt! And meet the strangest legion any man ever ran away to. Warren Peace joined the Space Legion to forget. He did that, the Legion removed all his memories. Now, he can either just live the adventurous life of a legionnaire, or try to find out what he wanted to forget. Adventure can lead to danger, and danger to death, so perhaps he should try to recover his memory. With only a blue plastic toad to guide him in his search for his past, and the forces of Lieutenant Toogood, the redoubtable Captain Hardy and worst of all, the dreaded Oscars ranged against him, Warren sets out (and is set upon by Ulphans, Aspatrians, man eating alien fungi, man eating alien trees and throw rugs that do even worse (or so Warren is told by his comrades in arms that have managed to survive). This book could be an old fashioned space opera, it could be a spoof of an alien space opera, it could be a nastily biting satire on both western civilization and space opera. It could be all those and more, it is hilarious.

Who Goes Home?
by Sylvia WaughLike Patrick in Space Race and Matthew and Alison in Earthborn, Steven is a visitor from Ormingat, living on Earth with his family for a designated number of years. But Steven is not merely an observer, he is an arranger, a facilitator with the power to direct attention away from any Ormingatriga who needs protection. When his earthly son Jacob is born with a fatal immune deficiency, Steven requests help from Ormingat in order to save his life and as a result the boy survives, but grows up surrounded by a protective shield without friends. When Steven is forced to tell Jacob of his identity and involve him in his work, Jacob resents his father's imposition. Then comes the debacle of the Derwents' accident and Nesta's flight from home, which both bring undesired publicity and the danger of detection to the Ormingat aliens. Steven, summoned to return early to the mother planet, does not want to go. If he returns he must abandon his earth wife, Lydia. And where does all this leave unhappy Jacob who makes contact not only with Mrs Dalrymple but also Nesta's family in York? A strong conclusion to the trilogy, uniting the plots from the earlier books - with a surprising and dramatic finale.

Who Goes There: Travels Through Strangest Britain In Search Of The Doctor
by Nick GriffithsThe author of Dalek I Loved You charts his travels through England and Wales tracking down locations used in Doctor Who, both classic and new. Being an odd kind of show, Doctor Who&’s locations too are odd. This is no glamorous trip. Dungeness Nuclear Power Station, anyone? A flooded china clay pit in Cornwall? As he travels, so Nick Griffiths discovers another side to his well-trodden country, which is no less evocative. Then he goes to the pub. As in his previous memoir Dalek I Loved You, the travel writing is backed up by Nick&’s childhood reminiscences and contemporary musings. A companion website offers photographs from the trip, a Google map of the locations, and details of the nearest pub. In this innovative way, readers are invited to follow in his footsteps. Who Goes There isn&’t just for Who fans, it&’s a very funny book for anyone who fancies a trip off the beaten path. Praise for Dalek I Loved You &“A very funny book for anyone who grew up wearing Tom Baker underpants. I know I did.&”—David Tennant &“An unadulterated nostalgia-fest written with fun, wit and love.&”—Doctor Who Magazine &“He conjures up just how mind-blowing it was for an ordinary suburban kid to be transported to a realm of danger and rampant sci-fi imaginings.&”—Financial Times &“If I am getting carried away, it is the fault of Griffiths&’s awfully charming memoir of boyhood and Doctor Who, with its deft evocations of eight-year-old invincibility and embarrassing school discos as well as arguments about Cybermen vs Autons or Jon Pertwee vs Tom Baker. Griffiths&’s chatty, self-deprecating style is disarming.&”—The Guardian

by Lin KaymerJeremy's friend, Mackie Spence, seems different. She doesn't act like the same person he's grown up with all his life. And Jeremy would know. He didn't see much of Mackie during the summer that followed her near-drowning incident. But it's September, she's back at school, and Jeremy can't explain the changes in her. After all, he's a jock who understands science and math, not girls like Mackie. Still, when both of them volunteer at the wild animal shelter, he sees how huge, wounded birds calm to her touch. And that's just the beginning. When Jeremy, who's falling hard for Mackie, starts to feel protective of her, keeping an eye on her as she makes her way through the woods and coves of the small Puget Sound island where both of them grew up, he sees things he finds hard to believe. Mackie is still Mackie, but she's also someone beyond normal human experience. So who is she? Or...what is she? How can Jeremy protect Mackie from her fate? Should he even try, or is he interfering in something so big and so ancient that it doesn't even have a name? And while he may love Mackie, is he going where mere mortals are forbidden? To save the girl he loves, Jeremy must solve puzzles that will not only change his future, but the way he understands life, forever.
