Going Gray: What I Learned about Beauty, Sex, Work, Motherhood, Authenticity, and Everything Else That Really Matters
by Anne KreamerAnne Kreamer considered herself a youthful 49 until a photo of herself with her teenage daughter stopped her in her tracks. In one unguarded moment she saw herself for what she really was -- a middle-aged woman with her hair dyed much too harshly. In that one moment Kreamer realized that she wasn't fooling anyone about her age and decided it was time to get real and embrace a more authentic life. She set out for herself a program to let her hair become its true color, and along the way discovered her true self. Going Gray is Kreamer's exploration of that experience, and a frank, warm and funny investigation of aging as a female obsession. Through interviews, field experiments, and her own everywoman's chronicle, Kreamer probes the issues behind two of the biggest fears aging women face: Can I be sexually attractive as a gray-haired, middle-aged woman? and Will I be discriminated against in the work world? Her answers will surprise you. In searching for the balance between attractiveness and authenticity, Kreamer's journey of middle-aging illiminates in a friendly, useful, and entertaining way the politics and personal costs of this generation's definition of "aging gracefully.
Going Home: Finding Peace When Pets Die
by Jon KatzInSoul of a Dog, Izzy & Lenore, A Good Dog,and other acclaimed works,New York Timesbestselling author Jon Katz has written meaningfully about the cherished bond between humans and animals—especially our intense connection to our pets. Now, in this moving and thoughtful book, Katz addresses the difficult but necessary topic of saying goodbye to a devoted companion, and offers comfort, wisdom, and a way forward from sorrow to acceptance. When Jon Katz first brought Orson home, he couldn’t predict how this boisterous border collie would change his life, most notably by inspiring him to buy Bedlam Farm. Yet for all of Katz’s years as a dog owner, Orson’s death shook him in a deeply profound way. “I was embarrassed by my grief,” he remembers. “What right did I have to fall to pieces over a border collie?” Drawing on personal experiences, stories from fellow pet owners, and philosophical reflections, Katz provides guidance and support for those in mourning. By allowing ourselves to grieve honestly and openly, he posits, we can in time celebrate the dogs, cats, and other creatures that have so enriched us. With great compassion, Katz compels us to consider if we gave our pets good lives, if we were their advocates in times of need, and if we used our best judgments in the end. In dealing with these issues, we can alleviate guilt, let go, and help others who are undergoing similar passages. Full of empathy, insight, and sage advice,Going Homeis an invaluable guide and touchstone for anyone who has lost a pet. Jon Katz honors the animals that have graced our lives and reveals their truly timeless gifts: unwavering companionship and undying love.
Going Menopostal: What You (and Your Doctor) Need to Know About the Real Science of Menopause and Perimenopause
by Amy AlkonHalf of the population—the female half—is getting healthcare based on medical myth rather than evidence. Going Menopostal is Amy Alkon&’s mission to change that. This book started with a flash—Alkon&’s first hot flash. Drenching night sweats, insomnia, and brain fog soon followed—along with shame at feeling bewilderingly enraged at everyone and everything. Alkon, an award-winning science columnist and author, wanted to turn to her doctor. But there was a problem: More than half of the medical care we get in the US may not be &“based on, or supported by, adequate evidence,&” according to the US National Academy of Medicine. Knowing this, Alkon began a deep dive into the research on menopause and perimenopause––the 3 to 10 years leading up to menopause when women&’s symptoms are widely ignored, dismissed, and misdiagnosed (despite doctors having every intention of helping their patients). She was shocked by what she found: Most gynecology departments lack even one doctor with training and expertise in menopausal and perimenopausal medicine, and they expect their maternity and general reproductive health specialists to treat these conditions outside their scope of practice without informing patients––a violation of medical ethics. Perimenopause is wrongly viewed and treated as &“menopause lite&”––a time of lowered estrogen levels––when estrogen levels actually soar, making many women miserably symptomatic. Few doctors know that symptomatic perimenopausal women actually tend to lack progesterone, and that replacing it with safe, FDA-approved progesterone would alleviate their insomnia, hot flashes, and other suffering and counteract cell overgrowth that can lead to breast and endometrial cancer. Many doctors deny estrogen to their menopausal patients, unaware of current research showing that estrogen not only alleviates symptoms but protects against cardiovascular disease (soon to kill 1 in 3 women), bone fractures, metabolic syndrome, and more. Findings from studies done largely on middle-class white women are wrongly applied to black women and other women of color, ignoring crucial differences, such as generally lower triglyceride levels in black women that can make heart disease harder to detect. This meticulously researched book is written in clear, everyday language that you don&’t need the slightest science background to understand (along with Alkon&’s signature dark humor). Alkon equips you with the exact words to confidently ask critical questions and motivate your doctor to partner with you and treat you appropriately––instead of giving you the &“treatment&” her favorite bus driver got: told by her doctor to &“just wait out&” her raging insomnia, night sweats, and hot flashes. Alkon&’s ultimate goal: Empowering all women with the science and strategies they need to get the evidence-based care they expect and deserve.

Going Sane
by Adam PhillipsBeing sane has long been defined simply as that bland and nebulous state of not being mentally ill. While writings on madness fill entire libraries, until now no one has thought to engage exclusively with the idea of sanity. In a society governed by indulgence and excess, madness is the state of mind we identify with most keenly. Though ultimately destructive, it is often credited as the wellspring of genius, individuality, and self-expression. Sanity, on the other hand, confounds us. One of the world's most respected psychoanalysts and original thinkers, Adam Phillips redresses this historical imbalance. He strips our lives back to essentials, focusing on how we—as human beings, parents, lovers, as people to whom work matters—can make space for a sane and well-balanced attitude to living. In a world saturated by tales of dysfunction and suffering, he offers a way forward that is as down-to-earth and realistic as it is uplifting and hopeful.

by Mel BlackabyLess Effort, More Joy What is the second mile? It's the difference between living as a good person and enjoying life as a child of God. Because God does not reward your duty, He blesses your relationship with His Son. It's time to experience radical living. It's time to enter into the second mile! Cease to Strive... " If someone forces you to go one mile," Jesus said, "go with him two miles" (Matthew 5: 41). Are you obligated to serve...regardless of a mediocre attitude? Are you supposed to be exhausted? ...So God Can Thrive Author Mel Blackaby carefully unfolds the true meaning of Christ's words so you will see that it's not about you. While the world sees your good works on the first mile, they see Christ's power working through you on the second. He carries the burden and takes you beyond yourself. First mile living is cramped and unsatisfying. When you stride beyond it, chains fall off and freedom ensues. True rest, fulfillment, joy, and other surprising treasures become yours--when you dare to embark upon the second mile. Story Behind the Book"As a pastor in North America , I am amazed by how many Christians struggle with depression, anxiety, and stress. The burdens of life overwhelm them, and they pull back from serving the Lord, thinking they can't take any more pressure. While visiting Mozambique , I went to the home of a native pastor who also works a secular job to support his life, his church, and another mission church. I was shocked at how little he had. He was giving his all to the Lord and existing on the bare minimum. As I consider his challenges, I am struck by his contagious smile. He has taken the yoke of Jesus and learned from Him; he has found rest for his soul and lives abundantly; he is walking in the second mile. I want God's children everywhere to know the same joy and privilege that comes from serving God." -- Mel BlackabyFrom the Hardcover edition.

Golden: Empowering Rituals to Conjure Your Inner Priestess
by Asa SoltanPersian Pop Priestess and Spiritual Gangsta, Asa Soltan shares seven sacred rituals on beauty, love, career, family, and friendships. She finally gives her loyal legion of fans the book they’ve been begging for, providing them with the tools to find confidence, empowerment, and channel their inner priestess.Asa was eight years old when her family fled their war-torn country of Iran to seek refuge in Germany. To say she experienced culture shock after arriving is an understatement. She had never seen anyone that looked and acted so different from her, and she didn’t speak a word of German or English. She felt completely cast off from her land, her culture, and her people. Feeling a need to connect to her culture and herself, she created rituals that she practiced every day. At first they were a simple way to create a sacred space for herself so she could go within and remember who she really was. But when she became a refugee for the second time moving from Germany to Los Angeles, those rituals kept her deeply connected to her Inner Priestess—the authentic version of herself that existed without ego, baggage, or attachments to material things. In Golden Asa shares how you can connect to your Inner Priestess with seven rituals she’s developed throughout her life—rituals that will help you clean out your body, your environment, and your emotional life so you can live without negativity and fear. Within each chapter are fun, lighthearted tips based on Asa’s own personal journey to find peace and acceptance, as well as stories and photos from her childhood to illustrate the impact these rituals can have. Whether you choose to focus on one ritual separately or all of them at once, Golden can guide you to a state of glamorous, gorgeous mindfulness and a chance to live the life of your dreams.
