Christian Truth Made Plain: Faith Seeking Understanding

by Dave Sheasley

The book provides a clear and straightforward presentation of Christian truth for the average Christian believer in understandable, non-ecclesiastical, language. It is intended to help the believer understand the ultimate truth about God and human beings and, with the knowledge of such truth, experience the peace, comfort, and assurance of God's love and purpose.God has made Himself known through the magnificence of the natural world and astounding complexity of life itself. Today we also know that the universe was created in the Big Bang, which requires a Creator who exists outside the universe.Although believers know that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, an indispensable part of God's true nature is his love. This is demonstrated through God's ultimate revelation in Jesus Christ. It is his love of human beings and his desire for a love relationship with us that is his reason for creating us and our purpose for being. But sin entered the world with Adam's disobedience in the Garden of Eden. The true nature of sin is understood as self-centeredness, a misplaced priority of putting our own needs and wants above those of the One who created us. Adam's original sin resulted in a genetic change that has been inherited by all human beings born after Adam, and accounts for the sin nature of self-centeredness that exists within each one of us. It is this original sin which accounts for all the pain and suffering, even from natural disasters and disease.God's act to remedy human sin and restore our relationship with Him is Jesus Christ. The Bible describes our condition and his solution using legal terms such as guilt and punishment, as a debt which we owe to God but cannot repay, and as slavery to our sinful nature. We are unable to do anything ourselves to remedy our condition. Salvation is a gift which God offers us. All we have to do is believe the truth. In the second part of the book, various troublesome topics that confront the Christian believer are discussed in order to bring understanding, comfort, and assurance. God's existence outside of time is presented to correct the misunderstandings of predestination. The truth of God's grace, the free gift He offers through Jesus Christ, is explained, showing that a gift offered must be accepted in order to be complete. The contemporary issue of evolution is shown to be wholly consistent with Christian truth when the established scientific facts and Christian truth are both understood. God's hand, rather than chance, explains the development of new species through genetic changes in DNA, while human beings came into existence through the image of God which He miraculously breathed into Adam and Eve in a second step following the physical and physiological development of the bodies which we inhabit.Insights are provided into the usually avoided topics of Jesus Christ as the only way to God and the seeming mystery of death.

Christianity To Go: You Can't Share the Good News Until You Are the Good News. Church Doesn't Start Until You Leave the Building.

by Glen Berteau

Taking the beauty of Jesus out of our church buildings and into the world Church buildings are important. They give us a place where we can gather, but ultimately they’re just buildings. They’re not the real church. We are. Our impact shouldn’t end when we walk out the doors of the church. That is the moment that it should begin. Christianity to Go shows you how to let God transform your life into something so beautiful you can’t help but attract people, inspiring you to go out into the world and shine. God wants to point to us and say, “Look what I’ve done with him, with her, and with them! I’ve restored them. No, they aren’t perfect yet, but someday they will be. Look at their beauty! I’m so proud they’re Mine!” Jesus makes us beautiful by clothing us with love, joy, and spiritual strength. Get up and leave the building. People are waiting for you to show them your beauty because your beauty points them to Jesus.

Christianity and Autosuggestion

by C. Brooks Ernest Charles

Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie (1857-1926) was a French psychologist and pharmacist who introduced a popular method of psychotherapy and self-improvement based on optimistic autosuggestion.“THE distinctive feature of M. Coué’s method, compared with other popular methods of self-healing, lies in the fact that it reposes on purely psychological bases. This is its value. We may be reproached with robbing it, in this book, of its psychological foundation and confusing its clarity with mystical speculation. But this is not so. The value of M. Coué’s psychological doctrine and of his technical method is in no sense denied or depreciated in these pages. We compare and contrast his teaching with the teaching of Christ on cognate subjects. Finding between them an essential harmony, we attempt to place autosuggestion in its true position in Christian life and thought, and to utilise the Christian dynamic for extending and deepening its power. The secular practice of autosuggestion continues unaltered, but side by side with it we attempt to erect, in essential outlines, a Christian practice of autosuggestion.”—C. Harry Brooks

Christianity and Culture: The Idea of a Christian Society and Notes Towards the Definition of Culture

by T. S. Elliot

Christianity and Culture by T. S. Eliot is a profound and thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between religion, society, and cultural identity. This volume brings together two of Eliot’s influential essays, The Idea of a Christian Society and Notes Towards the Definition of Culture, offering readers an insightful examination of how faith shapes the moral and intellectual fabric of civilization. In The Idea of a Christian Society, Eliot argues that a society grounded in Christian principles fosters justice, community, and a shared sense of purpose. He reflects on the moral decay that can result from secularism and materialism, contending that cultural renewal requires the influence of faith in both personal and public life. For Eliot, Christianity offers not just spiritual salvation but also a framework for building a society where human flourishing is guided by moral truth and collective responsibility. In Notes Towards the Definition of Culture, Eliot delves into the meaning and purpose of culture, considering how religious belief, education, and tradition are interwoven with cultural development. He emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural heritage and reflects on the role of Christianity in maintaining social coherence. Eliot also discusses the need for intellectual humility and openness to transcendence in the face of modern challenges.Together, these essays offer a compelling vision of culture as inseparable from religious values, inviting readers to reflect on the interplay between faith, tradition, and the common good. Christianity and Culture is essential reading for those interested in philosophy, theology, or cultural studies, offering timeless insights into how Christian belief can inform both individual lives and the broader society. Eliot’s work challenges modern readers to reconsider the role of faith in shaping not only personal values but also the cultural and moral direction of society.

Christianity and the Roman Empire

by William E. Addis

Christianity and the Roman Empire by William E. Addis offers a thorough exploration of the growth and eventual dominance of Christianity within the Roman world. Written with scholarly depth, the book traces the origins of Christianity, its development in the context of the Roman Empire, and its transformation from a persecuted sect into the official religion of the state.Addis begins by examining the historical and cultural environment of the Roman Empire during the rise of Christianity, showing how the political, philosophical, and religious landscape shaped early Christian thought. He discusses the challenges faced by early Christians, including state-sponsored persecution, internal doctrinal disputes, and tensions with both Jewish and pagan communities. Through this lens, readers gain insight into the resilience and adaptability of the early church. The narrative progresses through pivotal moments, such as the spread of Christian teachings through missionary work, the writings of early Church Fathers, and the role of martyrdom in strengthening the faith. Addis also highlights the impact of key events, including Constantine’s conversion and the Edict of Milan, which marked the beginning of Christianity’s ascent to imperial favor. The book delves into the complex relationship between Christian doctrine and Roman governance, illustrating how Christianity influenced the moral, social, and political fabric of the empire. Addis reflects on how the alliance between church and state shaped both institutions, laying the groundwork for the development of medieval Christendom.Christianity and the Roman Empire provides readers with a nuanced understanding of the intersection between faith and power in ancient history. For those interested in early Christianity, Roman history, or the dynamics of religious transformation, Addis’s work offers a compelling and informative account of a pivotal period in the history of Western civilization.

Chronic Illness and the Twelve Steps: A Practical Approach to Spiritual Resilience

by Martha Cleveland

A self-help guide for those who are chronically ill. When we live with a chronic illness or disability, our spirit is tested. And though we may have no say in our sickness, how we meet its spiritual challenge is entirely up to us. This is the message of Martha Cleveland's heartening book, which maps the spiral of emotional pain that steals the energy of the chronically ill--and shows how to turn this spiral into a path toward spiritual growth. Cleveland herself turned to the Twelve Steps for support during almost two decades of a recurring illness that defied diagnosis. In this book, she shares what the Twelve Step program teaches her about living with chronic illness--coping with feelings of pain, anger, hopelessness, and isolation--and about offsetting such negative emotions with spiritual wellness. An invitation to choose joy over despair, her book reveals how chronic illness can open the spirit to acceptance, serenity, and fulfillment.

Chronic Sorrow

by Susan Roos

Grief and loss are burgeoning concerns for professional disciplines such as nursing, social work, family therapy, psychology, psychiatry, law, religion and medicine. Although understanding has increased in virtually all other areas of grief and loss, chronic sorrow has received scant attention. Chronic sorrow is a natural grief reaction to losses that are not final, but continue to be present in the life of the griever. This book views chronic sorrow in a life-span perspective, and reveals the effect on the griever and the people close to them. This book fills a void in the literature; and attempts to develop a comprehensive analysis of chronic sorrow that will secure its position within the field of grief and loss.

Chronobiology: the Biology of Time

by Juan Moises de la Serna Luiz H. Medeiros de C. Cezar

It would be great if we could govern ourselves, according to our own time, which displays the optimum rhythm for any performance; therefore, as we will see throughout the book, to follow it will provide health. Each of us is a unique being, so it would be convenient if we could learn to listen to our own organism’s clock, in order to live in attunement with its functioning. Thereby, by adjusting to it, we will be able to perform any task with ability and calmness. To perform daily activities more quickly than this time, will only bring stress and diseases associated with it. Similarly, performing them slower than the optimum time will cause despair and boredom. This present book addresses a theme of great relevance for personal self-discovery and for social relations, as it will enable us to approach others under a new enriching perspective. Church of the Small Things: The Million Little Pieces That Make Up a Life

by Ree Drummond Melanie Shankle

Is my ordinary, everyday life actually significant? Is it okay to be fulfilled by the simple acts of raising kids, working in an office, and cooking chicken for dinner? It’s been said, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.” The pressure of that can be staggering as we spend our days looking for that big thing that promises to take our breath away. Meanwhile, we lose sight of the small significance of fully living with every breath we take.Melanie Shankle, New York Times bestselling author and writer at The Big Mama Blog tackles these questions head on in her fourth book, Church of the Small Things. Easygoing and relatable, she speaks directly to the heart of women of all ages who are longing to find significance and meaning in the normal, sometimes mundane world of driving carpool to soccer practice, attending class on their college campus, cooking meals for their family, or taking care of a sick loved one.The million little pieces that make a life aren’t necessarily glamorous or far-reaching. But God uses some of the smallest, most ordinary acts of faithfulness—and sometimes they look a whole lot like packing lunch. Through humorous stories told in her signature style, full of Frito pie, best friends, the love of her Me-Ma and Pa-Pa, the unexpected grace that comes when we quit trying to measure up, and a little of the best TV has to offer, Melanie helps women embrace what it means to live a simple, yet incredibly meaningful life and how to find all the beauty and laughter that lies right beneath the surface of every moment.

Churchill-Canfield's Law: What Can Go Right Will Go Right

by Cheryl Canfield and Randal Churchill

Churchill-Canfield's Law is an empowering and inspiring look at the incredible potential of our own minds to create lives of meaning and purpose. It contains many insights on the psychological Laws of Mind: what we focus on we tend to manifest. Therefore, as Murphy s Law professes, when our attitude and focus is negative we tend to manifest the negative. The converse is a powerful demonstration of the power of the mind: when our attitude and focus is positive we tend to manifest the positive. When transformational practices like visualization, meditation and self-hypnosis are employed, outcomes can break through limitation to boundless possibilities. This book is built around several themes. First, a recognition of our inherent potential to tap into a greater awareness, giving unlimited access to intellectual and creative aspects of the mind. Second, glimpses into historical and biographical stories that serve as a foundation upon which to enrich and transform the quality of life. Third, simple examples and exercises that begin to open a vision for personal direction, focus and purpose not just for one s self, but as a meaningful part of the whole.

Cicero on the Emotions: Tusculan Disputations 3 and 4

by Marcus Tullius

The third and fourth books of Cicero's Tusculan Disputations deal with the nature and management of human emotion: first grief, then the emotions in general. In lively and accessible style, Cicero presents the insights of Greek philosophers on the subject, reporting the views of Epicureans and Peripatetics and giving a detailed account of the Stoic position, which he himself favors for its close reasoning and moral earnestness. Both the specialist and the general reader will be fascinated by the Stoics' analysis of the causes of grief, their classification of emotions by genus and species, their lists of oddly named character flaws, and by the philosophical debate that develops over the utility of anger in politics and war. Margaret Graver's elegant and idiomatic translation makes Cicero's work accessible not just to classicists but to anyone interested in ancient philosophy and psychotherapy or in the philosophy of emotion. The accompanying commentary explains the philosophical concepts discussed in the text and supplies many helpful parallels from Greek sources.
