I've Heard the Mermaids Singing

by Julia Mendenhall

A Queer Film Classic on Canadian director Patricia Rozema's I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, her quirky and hopeful first feature film which made its premiere at Cannes and won its Prix de la jeunesse. Presented as a "videotaped confession," it tells the story of Polly Vandersma, an unpretentious and introverted young woman who takes photographs as a hobby and works as a personal assistant to an elegant and sophisticated, but unsatisfied, art gallery director, Gabrielle St. Peres, whom she worships. This book presents a new close textual analysis of Mermaids that places this complex yet teachable film unquestionably within the global queer film canon while uncovering many of its complexities. The film has appeared on the Maclean's "Top 10 Films of the 20th Century" and Toronto International Film Festival's Best 10 Canadian Films of All Time.Julia Mendenhall, a longtime fan of the film, places it in the context of the director's life experiences and her filmic oeuvre, the production and reception history of the film within the mid to late 1980s and the 1990s era of "outing," and the development of queer theory.

I, Millennial: One Snowflake's Screed Against Boomers, Billionaires and Everything Else

by Tom Ballard

&‘A damn hilarious read.&’ Nazeem Hussain &‘A true barbarian.&’ Andrew Bolt Our world is in chaos lol. And no, Australian Millennials, it&’s not your imagination: things are especially f**ked for us. Millions of Baby Boomers got beach houses, free education, jobs for life and a franking credit-fed retirement. But Millennials have been handed a housing crisis, crippling student debt, the gig economy, a cooked planet, a truly broken political system and now wars, inflation and a global pandemic, as a treat. This fully sucks. But never fear – this book is going to fix everything. Through the power of jokes, history, interviews and sass, so-called comedian Tom Ballard unpicks how his generation got here, and explains why we should probably do a revolution. Fact-filled and furiously funny, this is a must-read not just for young people wondering why they&’ve been given such a raw deal, but for anyone with an interest in how we&’re making our collective future impossible. &‘Tom Ballard is one of the most original, fearless and hilarious voices in Australian comedy.&’ Wil Anderson &‘As a fellow beleaguered Millennial, Tom is exactly the voice we need in this time of wailing capitalist death throes. Funny but biting, he lays out how the system has screwed us all – and it has nothing to do with avocado toast. You&’ll never be able to afford a house, so spend your money on this book instead.&’ Amy Remeikis &‘Ballard is fuming, funny, and armed with facts.&’ Tom Tilley &‘Speaking as Tom&’s non-biological mother, I am naturally proud to bursting of everything he does, especially the gay sex and particularly the class consciousness, which you will find emerging in this book.&’ Helen Razer &‘Tom makes me laugh, and think. I&’m not sure in which order. This book might be his last but that&’s ok – he&’s nailed it.&’ Dave Hughes

I, Monster: Serial Killers in Their Own Chilling Words

by Tom Philbin

What goes through the dark minds of such notorious killers as Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam"), John Wayne Gacy, Dennis Rader (the "BTK Killer"), and others? In this chilling book, you’ll read exactly what they were thinking in their own words as they committed horrible crimes. Using court transcripts and police interviews, veteran true-crime and crime-fiction writer Tom Philbin has compiled the testimony of twenty infamous serial killers—nineteen men and one woman. For fans of crime stories who look for realism, this book is like no other. The descriptions couldn’t be more realistic since, in effect, the book is written by the serial killers themselves. Their words range from the bizarre and weirdly fascinating to the revolting and horrific. In each case, Philbin provides a background profile to give readers a sense of the context from which these monsters emerged. Though they come from different backgrounds, nationalities, and generations, their words do reveal certain common elements. Not one evinces any sense of compassion or sensitivity in regard to their victims. They appear to be unable to control the impulses that lead them to kill. And in many cases, they derive a perverse sexual satisfaction from their deeds. Taking true-crime reading to a new level of immediacy, this disturbing book offers a glimpse into the worst side of human nature.

ICC Jurisprudence and the Development of International Humanitarian Law (Global Issues)

by Martin Faix Ondřej Svaček

A partial focus is given to the phenomenon of child soldiering which became symptomatic for the early practice of the ICC. The book provides readers with broad insight into the activity of the ICC. The first part contains chapters focused on the methodology of law-finding before the ICC, i.e., identification, interpretation, and application of the law. The authors address complex issues concerning the mutual relationship between treaty law (Article 8 of the ICC Statute) and customary international (humanitarian) law and explore the relevance of IHRL in the application and interpretation of Article 8 of the Rome Statute. The second part consists of chapters focused on substantive international criminal law. The authors address issues concerning contextual elements of war crimes, passive personal scope of IHL,denying judicial guarantees as a serious breach of IHL, forms of responsibility, and circumstances precluding wrongfulness.

ICT in English Language Education: Bridging the Teaching-Learning Divide in South Asia (SpringerBriefs in Education)

by Preet Hiradhar Atanu Bhattacharya

This book discusses the use of Web 2.0 tools to leverage students’ own use of New Media, which can take learning beyond the classroom. This paradigmatic book will help language educators gain a better understanding of the shift in pedagogic practices through the incorporation of technology in language learning programs. It explores the theoretical underpinnings of ICT in education, before moving on to pragmatic considerations and subsequent implementation of ICT within and beyond language classrooms in the South Asian context. The book covers a wide range of topics, such as the context within which ICT can be placed vis-à-vis teaching and learning in the digital age, as well as the role of ICT in communicative practices, and strategies used to bring these practices to the language classroom. It illustrates how ICT can be incorporated for both receptive as well as productive language learning skills, such as listening, reading, speaking, and writing within pedagogic frameworks. Accordingly, it addresses affordable technologies and how they can be made a part of the teaching–learning experience. Finally, in terms of ICT beyond the classroom, the book provides a broader perspective on ICT in terms of selecting platforms or software, as well as the evaluation of ICT with special reference to ICT policies that offer language educators guidance on managing ICT frameworks within their institutions. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable asset for language educators, teacher trainers, students, and researchers in education and linguistics programs within and outside South Asia.

ICT, Cities, and Reaching Positive Peace (Urban Sustainability)

by Ali Cheshmehzangi

This book is the first attempt to explore the use and application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and related smart technologies in cities and for the sole purpose of reaching positive peace. The everyday usage of digital technologies in cities encourages us to study the benefits, co-benefits, disadvantages, and threats of ICT application in cities and urban environments. The continuous growth of digital technologies and their growing demand in everyday urban practices and systems are already known to scholars, practitioners, and policy-makers. However, this book explores whether or not such applications and usage help us reaching positive peace. This approach is novel in the field of urban studies, allowing us to identify and highlight best practices, successes, and failures of ICT application to meet positive peace pillars. The scope of the book highlights our focus on positive peace and its eight pillars, mainly how they are meant to be achieved in cities and urban areas. With an analytical view on the topic, we aim to reflect on the systematic features of urban systems, using positive peace pillars as the primary targets. We believe ICT application and usage in cities could be more directive and beneficial to reach peace and prosperity to achieve such a goal. Therefore, this book provides a holistic guideline and coverage of ICT use for positive peace pathways and peace-building practices. We hope the findings of the book help researchers and policy-makers to come up with novel and integrated strategies, ensuring that our everyday usage of digital technologies, ICT, and smart tools, are more meaningful and people-oriented.
