Seit dem Weltjugendtag in Köln 2005 ist die Eventisierung von Großveranstaltungen auch im Bereich der Religion zunehmend zu beobachten. Dabei werden aus vornehmlich das Individuum fokussierender Perspektive dessen Erlebnisorientierung sowie ein damit verbundener Spaßbezug herausgestellt. Die ursprünglich den Festen eigene Funktion der in die alltägliche Lebenswelt hineinwirkenden Sinnorientierung und -vergewisserung weiche in den Events einer situativen kurzweiligen Sinndiffusion. Diese Arbeit befasst sich aus explizit religionssoziologischer Sicht mit den Spezifika religiöser Events. Basierend auf videographischen Daten christlicher Großveranstaltungen ist das Kernargument, dass religiöse Events eine affektive Ordnung aufweisen, welche über kommunikative Markierungen von Religion in differenzierter Weise die subjektiven Erfahrungen von Transzendenz und die Erfahrung der Gemeinschaft zu verschmelzen vermag. Es ist die affektive Relation zu etwas Abwesenden, die die Außerordentlichkeit religiöser Events ausmacht und diese von anderen Events unterscheidet.

Celebrity Morals and the Loss of Religious Authority (Routledge Studies in Religion)

This book examines American popular culture to demonstrate that celebrities have superseded religious figures as moral authorities. As trust in religious institutions has waned over recent decades, the once frivolous entertainment fringe has become the moral center. Young people and voters increasingly take cues from actors and athletes. Cemeteries and the Life of a Smoky Mountain Community: Cades Cove Under Foot

By supplementing a statistical analysis of Cades Cove’s twenty-seven cemeteries, completed as a National Park Study (#GRSM-01120), with ethnographic examination, the authors reconstruct the community in detail to reveal previously overlooked social patterns and interactions, including insight into the death culture and death-lore of the Upland South. This work establishes cemeteries as window into (proxies of) communities, demonstrating the relevance of socio-demographic data presented by statistical and other analyses of gravestones for Appalachian Studies, Regional Studies, Cemetery Studies, and Sociology and Anthropology.
