The Golfer's Alphabet
by A. B. Frost W.G. Van Sutphen
The timeless humor contained in this book first published in 1898, and its concern with the ever-rising popularity of golfing prompted its current reprinting. The distinctive signature of A. B. Frost on a cartoon or painting is the cause of much excitement at today's art exhibits and more so when it makes a rare appearance at an auction. Original works of this well-known artist are scarce and first editions of the 89 books he illustrated during his brilliant career are fast becoming collectors' items. Frost's biggest contribution to the world in giving visual realization to characters in a book is his unforgettable drawings of Br'er Rabbit and Uncle Remus (Uncle Remus and his Friends by Joel Chandler Harris). He has also illustrated the works of such notable authors as Charles Dickens (The Pickwick Papers), Mark Twain (Tom Sawyer Abroad, Tom Sawyer Detective and other Stories), former U . S . President Theodore Roosevelt (The Wilderness Hunter), and Lewis Carroll (Rhyme? And Reason?).
Works by Frost have also appeared in Harpers, Scribners, Colliers, Century, and Puck magazines. Frost showed a versatility with humor in words as well as in drawings by authoring several books. In addition, he was an accomplished painter, notably of hunting scenes. These lesser known though no less accomplished works were compiled in an 1895 Scribner portfolio, "Shooting Pictures," many of which still grace household calendars. Upon his death at 77, Frost was described as the "dean of our [American] illustrators." His obituary in the New York Evening Post in 1928 further eulogized, " Down through the ages, when he and we are gone, his genius will twinkle on in Huck and Tom and Ole Br'er Rabbit. What price monuments of stone?"

The Good Son: The Life of Ray ',Boom Boom', Mancini
by Mark KriegelFRANK SINATRA FAWNED OVER HIM. WARREN ZEVON WROTE A TRIBUTE SONG. Sylvester Stallone produced his life story as a movie of the week. In the 1980s, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini wasn’t merely the lightweight champ. An adoring public considered him a national hero, the real Rocky. From the mobbed-up steel city of Youngstown, Ohio, Mancini was cast as the savior of a sport: a righteous kid in a corrupt game, symbolically potent and demographically perfect, the last white ethnic. He fought for those left behind in busted-out mill towns across America. But most of all, he fought for his father. Lenny Mancini—the original Boom Boom, as he was called—had been a lightweight contender himself. But the elder Mancini’s dream ended on a battlefield in November 1944, when fragments from a German mortar shell nearly killed him. Almost four decades later, Ray promised to win the title his father could not. What came of that vow was a feel-good fable for network television. But it all came apart November 13, 1982, in a brutal battle at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Mancini’s obscure Korean challenger, Duk Koo Kim, went down in the 14th round and never regained consciousness. Three months later, Kim’s despondent mother took her own life. The deaths would haunt Ray and ruin his carefully crafted image, suddenly transforming boxing’s All-American Boy into a pariah. Now, thirty years after that nationally televised bout, Mark Kriegel finally uncovers the story’s full dimensions. In tracking the Mancini and Kim families across generations, Kriegel exacts confessions and excavates mysteries—from the killing of Mancini’s brother to the fate of Kim’s son. In scenes both brutal and tender, the narrative moves from Youngstown to New York, Vegas to Seoul, Reno to Hollywood, where the inevitably romantic idea of a fighter comes up against reality. With the vivid style and deep reporting that have earned him renown as a biographer, Kriegel has written a fast-paced epic. The Good Son is an intimate history, a saga of fathers and fighters, loss and redemption.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: The Rise and Fall of Pontypool RFC
by Nicholas Bishop Alun CarterWhat made Pontypool such a great seam of talent for the Welsh national team? Why were they hated and feared in equal measure by other clubs in Wales and across the Severn? What made Ray Prosser a coach ahead of his time?In this engrossing book, Alun Carter and Nick Bishop recount the dramatic story of the rise and fall of one of the great enigmas of Welsh club rugby: Pontypool RFC. They chart the glories and violence of the amateur era in the 1970s and ’80s before the club entered a period of steady decline in the age of professionalism, reaching the point of bankruptcy after a crippling legal battle with the Welsh RU. It is a symbolic tale of the disintegration of the social fabric that held a once-great club together, both on and off the playing field – often irresistibly funny, eventually tragic, but always larger than life.

The Government and Politics of Sport (Routledge Library Editions: Sports Studies)
by Barrie HoulihanWhen originally published in 1991 this was the first book to tackle the UK policy process of sport and to provide a political science analysis of some of the key issues facing sports administrators today. The volume identifies the parties involved: central government, local government, the Sports Council, the Central Council of Physical Recreation, and the individual sports governing bodies. It examines their effect on sport’s policy and administration through an analysis of three important current sport issues – football hooliganism, drug abuse among athletes and sport opportunities and facilities for school children.
