Beyond the Rink: Behind the Images of Residential School Hockey

by Janice Forsyth Alexandra Giancarlo Braden Te Hiwi

Teammates, champions, Survivors In 1951, after winning the Thunder Bay district championship, the Sioux Lookout Black Hawks hockey team from Pelican Lake Indian Residential School embarked on a whirlwind promotional tour through Ottawa and Toronto. They were accompanied by a professional photographer from the National Film Board who documented the experience. The tour was intended to demonstrate the success of the residential school system and introduce the Black Hawks to “civilizing” activities and the “benefits” of assimilating into Canadian society. For some of the boys, it was the beginning of a lifelong love of hockey; for others, it was an escape from the brutal living conditions and abuse at the residential school. In Beyond the Rink, Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth, and Braden Te Hiwi collaborate with three surviving team members—Kelly Bull, Chris Cromarty, and David Wesley—to share the complex legacy behind the 1951 tour photos. This book reveals the complicated role of sports in residential school histories, commemorating the team’s stellar hockey record and athletic prowess while exposing important truths about “Canada’s Game” and how it shaped ideas about the nation. By considering their past, these Survivors imagine a better way forward not just for themselves, their families, and their communities, but for Canada as a whole.

Beyond the Vertical

by Layton Kor

Layton Kor is pre-eminent in American mountaineering. He is considered the best rock climber of his generation, and his list of first ascents of technically difficult rock climbs, both free and aid, is perhaps unmatched by any American climber. In this book Kor tells the story in his own words of these groundbreaking and suspenseful climbs. Supplementing Kor's narrative are twenty-three accounts written by other leading climbers of the 1960s and 1970s, describing ascents they did with Kor: Royal Robbins, Fred Beckey, Pat Ament, Chris Bonington, Steve Roper, Huntley Ingalls, and many more share their perspectives. Kor's climbs have become some of the most famous routes in the world—the Naked Edge in Eldorado Canyon, the Diamond on Longs Peak, the Salathe Wall on El Capitan in Yosemite, the North Face of the Eiger in the Alps…the list goes on. Written in a straighforward and engaging style, and accompanied by stunning, historical color photographs, Beyond the Vertical is a must-have for all rock climbers and armchair mountaineers alike.

Beyond the Xs and Os: Keeping the Bills in Buffalo (Excelsior Editions)

by Mark C. Poloncarz

Inside account of the negotiations between the football Bills, New York State, and Erie County to sign a long-term stadium lease and thereby keep the team in Buffalo.Beyond the Xs and Os is the previously unpublished story of how a long-term stadium lease was negotiated and signed by New York's Erie County, the state, and the Buffalo Bills football team. Mark C. Poloncarz, the elected executive of the community that owned the stadium, provides a rare glimpse into the long, difficult, but ultimately rewarding effort to successfully conclude negotiations between a National Football League (NFL) franchise, the NFL, and a multitude of players from the political arena, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and US Senator Chuck Schumer. Poloncarz discusses the financial side of sports and reveals how the county was able to navigate what proved to be often-turbulent waters. Complicating negotiations was an ongoing frenzy in the local news media, hungry for any news about the new lease, and Bills team owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr., who was ninety-two and had said the team would be sold upon his death, thereby possibly being relocated to another city. In the end, a new lease was signed and the Bills remained in Buffalo at a time when a number of similar sized communities watched their teams relocate to other cities in larger markets.

Bias in the Booth: An Insider Exposes How the Sports Media Distort the News

by Dylan Gwinn

Most of us see sports as a welcome--even blessed--relief from the challenges and frustrations of everyday life. We want to sit back, open a beer, and enjoy the game. But many of those who bring us the game have a different agenda--they use their broadcasting platform to harangue us with their own politically correct preoccupations. If a seventh-round NFL draft pick who can't make the team or an over-the-hill basketball player declares that he's gay, he gets wall-to-wall media coverage and is hailed as a hero. If a stripper accuses college lacrosse players of rape, liberal sports reporters lead the lynch mob--with no apologies when the bearers of "white privilege" are proved innocent. In his blistering new book Bias in the Booth, sports reporter and commentator Dylan Gwinn takes you inside the sports media spin machine to reveal what they hope you won't notice: the sports media are no different from the news and entertainment media.

Bicycle Biomechanics: How to Build a Power Dynamometer

by Anthony Crimin Anthony McGarry

This book is not just for professional cyclists who look to improve their performance on the bicycle. The bicycle is also used in a variety of activities by enthusiasts in commuting; club riding and long-distance solo adventures. By gaining a deeper understanding of the human factors and physiology, cyclists can self-coach to improve their cycling with improved comfort and speed. However, it is often the perception of the cycling enthusiast that the latest frame and component technology play a significant role in rider performance. While this may be true for the professional rider it is because they are biomechanically fitted to their machine. Hence, the purpose of this book is to look beyond the tradition and myth of bicycle setup to help the motivated everyday rider gain a practical understating of the factors that influence their performance. This can be achieved in combination with web-based application tools. If the reader wishes to go further, the book demonstrates a method to build their own power dynamometer to gain an objective measure of their forces (kinetics) of motion. Essentially, by gaining knowledge of cycling biomechanics and measuring and evaluate their own performance, the reader may become their own coach.
