Computer-Based Diagnostics and Systematic Analysis of Knowledge: Critical Reflections and Advancements (Advances in Analytics for Learning and Teaching)

by Dirk Ifenthaler Pablo Pirnay-Dummer

This volume explores the rapidly advancing field of technology-supported knowledge assessment. Across academia, research on learning and instruction, AI-based analysis, psychology, and education, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive collection of foundations and methodologies related to knowledge. While the market offers books on individual and locally developed methods, a holistic overview is currently lacking. It aims to fill that gap, inspiring projects globally and benefiting knowledge-intensive developments in both digital and traditional learning environments. Understanding the state and processes of knowledge often poses a bottleneck in the quality of designs and implementations. This book addresses this challenge by focusing on mostly automated, easy-to-implement strategies, supporting the crucial task of understanding knowledge.

Computerized Accounting with QuickBooks® 2020

by Gayle Williams

This book gives students an introduction to QuickBooks that focuses not only on the software mechanics, but also on the basic accounting concepts that underlie all accounting systems. This book is not meant to be a user manual. It is meant to teach students how they can work with a computerized accounting system. The students will come away from this book with an understanding that it is knowledge of the principles of accounting, not data-entry skills, that is needed to be successful in business. This book is primarily intended for use in undergraduate accounting programs, although it could be used in business or computer information programs as well. It is expected that students taking this course have already successfully completed a course in financial accounting and have a firm understanding of the principles as well as the mechanics of accounting.

Concepts of Earth Science & Chemistry Parent Lesson Plan

by John Hudson Tiner

Concepts of Earth and Chemistry Course Description This is the suggested course sequence that allows one core area of science to be studied per semester. You can change the sequence of the semesters per the needs or interests of your student; materials for each semester are independent of one another to allow flexibility. Semester 1: Earth Blending a creationism perspective of history with definitions of terms and identification of famous explorers, scientists, etc., this book gives students an excellent initial knowledge of people and places, encouraging them to continue their studies in-depth. Semester 2: Chemistry Chemistry is an amazing branch of science that affects us every day, yet few people realize it, or even give it much thought. Without chemistry, there would be nothing made of plastic, there would be no rubber tires, no tin cans, no televisions, no microwave ovens, or something as simple as wax paper. This book presents an exciting and intriguing tour through the realm of chemistry as each chapter unfolds with facts and stories about the discoveries of discoverers. Find out why pure gold is not used for jewelry or coins. Join Humphry Davy as he made many chemical discoveries, and learn how they shortened his life. See how people in the 1870s could jump over the top of the Washington Monument. Exploring the World of Chemistry brings science to life and is a wonderful learning tool with many illustrations and biographical information.

Confrontation in Academic Communication

by Irena Vassileva

This book examines the argumentation strategies employed by linguists in voicing criticism, looks for explanations for confrontation in academic discourse, and evaluates the positive and/or negative effects it has on international academic communication. Issues such as the role of intertextuality, cross-cultural variations, and the notion of “academic discourse community” are also touched upon. Special attention is paid to the modern developments in contrastive rhetoric studies, as well as to the controversial issue of the use of context-based versus corpus-based methods. The corpus under investigation consists of academic book reviews in English and German with a clearly stated negative character, as well as a series of publications in English interrelated by the fact that they discuss a common group of problems but from two fully confrontative points of view. They illustrate what has been called an “academic war”. Some related theoretical issues are also discussed, including the role of evaluation in academic communication, the relationship between criticism, critique, negative evaluation, and confrontation in academic communication, as well as the importance of culture, discipline culture, and communities of practice. The contrastive discourse analysis demonstrates differences between English and German in terms of the rhetorical strategies employed by review writers to express criticism. The book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of academic communication and rhetorics, as well as teachers in English/German for academic purposes.

Connected Learning: A Machine-Generated Literature Overview

by Henning Schoenenberger

This book offers a unique, machine-generated overview of the current state of research in Connected Learning, Networked Learning, Digital Badges, Micro-Credentials, and Lifelong Learning. The concept of Connected Learning picks up learners where they are, and that is no longer just the classroom or seminar room. Connected Learning seeks to understand the context of learning and the motivation of learners in order to design a more contemporary and effective learning experience. Central to this is the understanding that Connected Learning is collaborative and takes place in peer-to-peer networks, that it is based on participation, problem orientation and application, and that the more personalised the learning, the more interested learners are. This volume condenses and synthesizes research from a large variety of English-language articles into a concise yet comprehensive overview. Readers will benefit from the selection and synthesis of articles that allow them to get a quick understanding of the research area, while also being able to click through to the original sources to dive deeper into any particular topic. This volume is a key source of information and insight for those interested in the current research, as well as serving as an inspiring starting point for their own research.
