Candle in the Night

by Elizabeth Howard

Tamsen was eighteen when she left New York State and started on the long journey to the West to join her brother. The West was Detroit and the year was 1812. Letters were often months on their way, so Tamsen did not know that her brother had married and no longer needed her to keep house for him. Nor did she dream that the United States would soon be at war with Great Britain, but she learned to adapt herself to her sister-in-law's quiet antagonism and to endure the fear and turmoil of a city captured by the British and exposed to Indian attack. It took her longer to learn the answer to another problem. Two young men were in love with this slim dark-haired girl, who liked them both and loved neither. It was not until one of them, captured and injured by the Indians, was dragged through the Detroit streets and Tamsen was finally able to ransom him, that she understood her own heart. In those agonizing moments and the anxious days of nursing him back to health, her love grew strong and steady, like a candle in the night.

Candy

by Mian Mian

Candy is a hip, harrowing tale of risk and desire, the story of a young Chinese woman forging a life for herself in a world seemingly devoid of guidelines. Hong, who narrates the novel, and whose life in many ways parallels the author's own, drops out of high school and runs away at age 17 to the frontier city of Shenzen. As Hong navigates the temptations of the city, she quickly falls in love with a young musician and together they dive into a cruel netherworld of alcohol, drugs, and excess, a life that fails to satisfy Hong's craving for an authentic self, and for a love that will define her. This startling and subversive novel is a blast of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll that opens up to us a modern China we've never seen before.

Canes vs. Gators: Inside the Legendary Miami Hurricanes and Florida Gators Football Rivalry

by Marty Strasen Brock Berlin

All parties seem to be in agreement that the rivalry between the University of Miami and the University of Florida is as nasty and historical as they come; going back to the thirties, it’s the state of Florida’s oldest major rivalry. Gators beat writer Pat Dooley described the vitriolic rivalry to the author simply as "vile.”History would prove that to be true. In Canes vs. Gators, coaches Urban Meyer, Howard Schnellenberger, Steve Spurrier, Larry Coker, and Ron Zook and several former notable players on both sides of the rivalry, along with key media members for both schools, offer their unique commentary on the intensity of the rivalry. For example, Schnellenberger recalled with anger that after his staff and team were pelted with frozen oranges in 1980, he kicked an extra meaningless field goal in a blowout victory . . . and he wished he’d called on his punter to take the ball and launch it into the Florida student section!Author Marty Strasen, who covered both schools for over a decade, brings to life the greatest moments of this historic rivalry. This book is the perfect gift for Florida college football fans!Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports-books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team.Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. Canon Constitution and Canon Change in Children's Literature (Children's Literature and Culture)

by Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer Anja Muller

This volume focuses on the (de)canonization processes in children’s literature, considering the construction and cultural-historical changes of canons in different children’s literatures. Chapters by international experts in the field explore a wide range of different children’s literatures from Great Britain, Germany, Scandinavia, the Low Countries, Eastern and Central Europe, as well as from Non-European countries such as Australia, Israel, and the United States. Situating the inquiry within larger literary and cultural studies conversations about canonicity, the contributors assess representative authors and works that have encountered changing fates in the course of canon history. Particular emphasis is given to sociological canon theories, which have so far been under-represented in canon research in children’s literature. The volume therefore relates historical changes in the canon of children’s literature not only to historical changes in concepts of childhood but to more encompassing political, social, economic, cultural, and ideological shifts. This volume’s comparative approach takes cognizance of the fact that, if canon formation is an important cultural factor in nation-building processes, a comparative study is essential to assessing transnational processes in canon formation. This book thus renders evident the structural similarities between patterns and strategies of canon formation emerging in different children’s literatures.

Caos: Nadie puede decirte quién sos

by Magalí Tajes

Captain Fitz: FitzGibbon, Green Tiger of the War of 1812

by Enid Mallory

The name James FitzGibbon struck terror in the hearts of U.S. soldiers and this is the dramatic story of his life and his daring exploits. Irish-born James FitzGibbon came to Canada with the 49th Regiment to serve under his hero, Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. After the death of Brock at Queenston Heights and the capture of Fort George in the War of 1812, FitzGibbon spied on the enemy encampment, disguised as a settler selling butter. Armed with his intelligence report, the British launched a surprise night attack, and the Americans were forced to retreat. With his hand-picked band of Green Tiger guerrillas, Fitz fought to stop the U.S. raiding parties. Laura Secord alerted him to an impending attack at Beaver Dams, and with his 50 men and the support of First Nations warriors, he bluffed the 500-strong American Army into surrender. Captain Fitz is full of action: battles on land and lakes, the burning of York (Toronto), the drama of 6,000 American soldiers moving downriver to attack Montreal, only to be defeated at Crysler’s Farm. As well as the pageantry, there’s the misery, suffering, and hunger for honour and glory – all part of the War of 1812.

Captain Peggie

by Angela Brazil

At Summerton Park, a girls' boarding school in England, fifteen-year-old Peggie Paget returns to her house, Bronte, expecting to be just another resident. She soon gets a surprise when the house mistress appoints her captain. Bronte has not won many distinctions over the past year, and Miss Croft hopes that honest, hard-working, tactful Peggie can elevate the tone of the house and inspire her fellow residents. Some of the girls approve, but others are not happy, especially Helen Armstrong, who had expected to be captain. To complicate matters, Peggie's mischievous, impulsive cousin Louise Roper arrives fresh from living in South Africa. It is up to Peggie to control Louise, keep all the girls in line, and find ways for them all to excel in events such as the Christmas play and the flower show, not to mention hockey and tennis. Peggie would like to score some of the distinctions personally, but somehow the honors keep slipping from her and going to others. Many times she must put aside her own desires and give the glory to others who are more apt to win honor for Bronte. Meantime the girls have many adventures, close calls and good times as the school year progresses. Among these are a visit from the Prince of Wales, a trip to Italy, and a Shrove Tuesday costume party, as well as getting lost in the woods and a runaway motorbus. This is a charming, old-fashioned book. The times may have been different, but young girls were just as energetic, enthusiastic, and curious then as they are today.

Caravaggio: Painter on the Run

by Marissa Moss

Caravaggio was on a defiant mission to change the art world. Before him, there were pastel-colored idealized visions, polite paintings for a polite society. After him, there were slews of imitators, trying to grasp his brilliant slashes of light and dark, his people who looked more like your neighbor than a model of perfection. Bold with his brush, the young rebel was equally brash in his life, picking fights and getting arrested for things as silly as throwing a plate of artichokes in a waiter's face. Until he faced the ultimate punishment, condemned for a murder he didn't commit—at least not intentionally.
