Dads and Daughters: How to Inspire, Understand, and Support Your Daughter When She's Growing Up So Fast
by Joe KellyEvery father can make a huge difference in his daughter’s life. As the primary male role model in a girl’s life, fathers influence their daughters in profound ways, from how they see themselves to what they come to expect from men and the world at large. But men often don’t realize the importance of their interactions or may shy away from too close involvement because of their inexperience, or conditioning. Especially as girls move into adolescence, fathers may find themselves feeling distant from their daughters or awkward with the changing dynamic. Communication becomes difficult and parenting issues more complicated. But this is also the time when daughters most need their fathers to be an even greater presence in their lives. Dads and Daughters is a tool to bridge that gap and build a rewarding and joyful father-daughter relationship. From father to father and with insights from many other dads, Joe Kelly shows men how they can strengthen their relationships with their daughters and explores the tremendous rewards this relationship can bring. Starting with a self-assessment quiz titled “How Am I Doing as My Daughter’s Father?” dads can immediately see what kind of role they play in their daughter’s life. To educate fathers and offer solutions when problems arise, Dads and Daughters then offers thoughtful coverage of the most pivotal issues today’s girls face, such as sex and dating, body image, alcohol and drugs, media culture and violence, money and responsibility, and the future. In doing so he both illuminates the culture our daughters live in and shows fathers how to guide their daughters toward rewarding, healthy lives.

Dagger and Coin
by Kathy MacMillan"Rich in politics, intrigue, and betrayal, Dagger and Coin is a complex feminist fantasy featuring a tough and prickly ex-princess that I couldn't help but adore."—Heidi Heilig, author of The Girl from EverywhereThe sequel to Sword and Verse follows a familiar face—Soraya—as she attempts to rebuild a nation after the downfall of the monarchy. Readers who love Rae Carson and Kristen Cashore won’t be able to put this fantasy down.Soraya Gamo was meant to be queen of Qilara, until an Arnath slave rebellion upended the social order and destroyed the capital city. Now, improbably, she sits on the new ruling council beside Mati, Raisa, and Jonis from Book 1, and must work with her former enemies. She finally holds the political power she always wanted—but over a nation in ruins. As she helps to rebuild Qilara, she can, at last, use what everyone once told her to hide: her brain. But not everyone is ready to accept that the Arnathim are no longer enslaved to the Qilarites. So when a slave ship arrives in the city, full of Arnathim captured before Qilara fell, the civil unrest that has been bubbling since the rebellion erupts.Forced to confront her own prejudices, Soraya struggles to gain the trust of the Arnath people she once disregarded and establish peace in what has become chaos. With the threat of attacks high, Gelti, a former guard captain, trains Soraya in self-defense. As the two grow close, tension within the city ramps up, with danger, betrayal, and deception meeting Soraya everywhere she turns.Friends become foes, adversaries become companions, and the clashing of classes threatens to unravel all the good Soraya has been trying to do. Can Soraya, raised to be a submissive Qilarite lady, learn to be a true leader? Or will the sins of her past forever haunt the footsteps of her future?

Then, sections on soldiers' lives and activities on the homefront include interesting details such as: what the slaves' and the freed black men and women's lives were like; how soldiers obtained their food; how recipes were changed to accommodate food shortages; the popular books and magazines of the time; and how clothing and fashion were affected by the war. Dairy Queen Days
by Robert InmanFrom Publishers Weekly A passive protagonist and a bloodless story line make this third novel by Inman (Old Dogs and Children) a sluggish affair. Trout Moseley turns 16 in 1979, just as his mother heads for a mental institution and his father, a preacher, starts wrestling with his beliefs. Father and son retreat to the small Georgia hometown founded, named after and still dominated by their clan. There, Trout discovers a heavy ancestral burden and feels the need to right his family's past wrongs: "He could see that he was a product of a great aching history.... People with mills and trucks and money and power over other people's lives." Unfortunately, he does little besides rehash and bemoan his situation. The family's prominence?"When a Moseley farts, everybody smells it"?isn't convincingly established, and Trout's inherited moral responsibility for a town, even a failing one, doesn't come across as a compelling challenge. Inman's talent for natural dialogue and astute local coloring remains intact here, but it would have been put to better use in a story with a clearer, more dramatic conflict. Author tour. Gathered together, these stories make a compelling case for the presence of altruism in animals.
